I saw that vid a few days ago. I give the guy a lot of credit. We ALL make mistakes and he shared both his mistake of forgetting to put his side panel back on AND his mistake putting the pulley on backwards. Making a mistake does not make one a "noob" or a "dumbfuck" IMO. It make you human. IMO, forgetting the side panel should NOT cause the pulley to fail like that but that is the price one pays for cutting weight not unlike the bent tunnel thread. Anyways, Kudos to him for sharing his mishaps. We ALL break stuff (if we ride at all) but not everybody is willing to share their mistakes. The lesson here is, if you hit something and smash your side panel and are running QD2, even though your machine is still mobil under it's own power, better tow it out anyways lest you get some snow on the drive.

No.

How heavy do you build the pulley? Is it Polaris fault if you stick a tree branch in the pulley? Snow is water, water doesn't compress. Stuff it in there full enough and the belt or the pulley is going to blow.

Everything has a fuse. Build it to never break and you'll have a tank. Build it to be light and fun and you're going to break stuff when you get stupid.

I think what most guys are annoyed by, myself included, is that the video even remotely implies this issue was Polaris’ fault. We live an era of clickbait and that is what he did. However, just own your BS and show people it broke and use it as a training tool and reminder for others. In my opinion this situation can’t be blamed on Polaris at all. He made a mistake and he broke some parts. We have all been there. But don’t suggest this was a Polaris issue.
Yeah, I agree that his statements at the end of the video suggested that he was blaming Polaris atlas to some degree. I found those comments disappointing as well.

I dont know how anyone would think it would be a good idea to sidehill down a slope with a side panel off

I don't know how anybody could watch that vide and come to the conclusion that he "thought it was a good idea to sidehill with the panel off". he made it pretty clear that he FORGOT the panel and didn't realize it was missing until he got to the bottom of the hill. That is a mistake, we all make them. If he DID do it on purpose, then I would agree, he was a dumbfuck but that is not what happened. JMO.

I agree. the point I was making is that there are prices for making thing light. Doesn't mean we want to ride tanks out there. There is a fine line between light weight and durability. 1980 Ford pickups come to mind.

i think hat irritates people is he insinuates that it was some kind of design defect , it was not those belts do not stretch if you put enough snow and ice between the belt and pulley which ever is weakest will break.

I doubt this guy ever thought the cause of the failure was excessive snow compacting and building up between the belt and the pulley to the point that one of them was going to break. Now that he's seen the comments and realizes what caused the problem he probably understands it's not a warranty issue, and he just an honest mistake on his part. I'll cut him some slack because this is his first belt drive sled.

I said that wrong. I dont see how you could be missing a side panel and not have the situational awareness to realize a side panel is missing.

Fair enough. For ME, I also find it difficult to wrap my head around how that could happen. However, that is largely because don't have a cooker can and therefore I never open my side panel when I stop to eat and even if I did, I am pretty sure that I would just open it, not take it off like he did. If I were to take it right off and lean it against another guys sled, which is what happened I. this case it seems to me, I could quite easily see myself riding off without it, especially if I had electric start. I have forgotten to zip uo my pockets more than a few times and filled them with snow. Have forgotten to zip uo my tunnel bag a couple times. Early in the season, good snow, excited to rideing a new sled, maybe never had a cooker before so, like me has never in the past had the panel off while stopped to eat, jump on and go. Not that much of a stretch and the fact that it DID happen shows that it can. I dunno, I'm make my fair share of "whoops's". Still think it takes courage to post not only the forgotten panel but ALSO having put the pulley on backwards for all the sledding world to criticize. He could have easily edited out all that and posted only his best riding footage to make himself look like a super sledder on the net. Just sharing my opinion.

Is this guy related to you so you feel the need to defend him?

Asking for a friend.

I watched the video and the guy isn’t connected to reality………

For the record, I am not "defending him". He made a mistake and IMO needs no "defence" for that. No, I don't know him, don't even know his name. Never seen another video of his before or since. Just stumbled onto it the other day. Just my opinion but it seems that some of the respondents here are not connected with reality to me. REALITY is that people make mistakes. I have yet to meet the perfect person that has never made a mistake or forgotten to do something yet some here seem to think that this guy is a douche nozzle for making one. I guess because I know that I am not perfect I can understand and accept that others may not perfect either. You know, People that live in glass houses..........Situations like this remind me of something that happened about 20 years ago when I was at a black powder shoot. Someone on the line "dryballed", not an uncommon mistake. "Dry balling" is when you load your gun but forget to put the powder in. A friend on the line laughed and LOUDLY stated "How can ANYBODY dry ball. I've been shooting muzzleloaders for 25 years and have NEVER dry balled". Well, the VERY NEXT station, Roy dry balled. Yup, he never heard the end of that. I suppose some here would have made him walk out since he was so "stupid".

I like when he say's " I think the belt got a little wet and slipped off" When the bottom pulley is sitting sideways.

With the price of the new Quickdrive belts it might be a good thing the pulley let go and not the belt. Just imagine if the pulley was strong enough that it broke the jackshaft?

Absolutely nothing to do with his mistakes.

Just the trying to blame polaris……..

Seems kind of odd to me that a lil pow wrecked that I guess. Even with the panel on there’s always a chitload of snow in there and never any issues.

i was kinda suprised it broke, not sure about polaris but you put a belt drive on a cat or doo it pretty exposed to snow buildup in the footwell there. I was kinda thinking maybe it was hot and the cold snow caused it to crack under load? Im sure that part needs to break in like a lot of other components.
I did kinda chuckle when he said he used to ride doos, wonder if anyone has warned him about the tunnel yet
