Mammoth Report

I got up to the ridge today, it's been 3 days since the good sized dump. The coverage is decent, but it is not "powder". It's very late spring conditions. Which can make it soft and fun but for the most part it's wind packed with a soft layer up top. I wouldn't venture to far off "known" trails without really knowing the terrain as there is a high probability of hitting something just under the surface of the snow. With that said it's still fun. The road into the ridge will probably hold threw the weekend but I doubt much longer after that until the next storm. If I'd have to call it anything, it would be "off trail, trail riding". Still alot of fun for October, and it's great to get out there but if I was only going to make 1 trip to do some snowmobiling in mammoth this wouldn't be it, with that said if your coming up to SKI, Snowboard since the hill is opening tomorrow. I wouldn't hesitate to bring the sleds to play around after the lifts close.

Good thread, thanks Brahm.. got stuck having to work tomorrow, or would of drove up..... anything for an October ride!
Look forward to the updates when the real stuff falls :D

Great...I guess my wife picked the perfect weekend to take the girls out of town and leave me with the little ones, so much for riding the first snow :( Thanks brahm for the snow reports, I hope we get another big dump soon and will be watching for updates.

Make sure you take pics and post them here .... PLEASE !!!!

How's the new clutch?

I hear skiing tomorrow at Mammoth is free?

Ya definitely want to be careful about what areas you let loose in and stick to the tracks already down in the denser wooded areas. The ridge it's self (10000'+) is pretty barren, I'll be heading back up Saturday & Sunday just to keep testing things out with the new clutch and to get my legs back, I don't think I'm going to try to tip her over much in fear of digging under and clipping something.

I'll try to get some pictures this weekend, as far as the clutch I'm very impressed with the team tied setup I still want to see how it performs when it's under heavy load pulling threw powder but my first impression is good.

Oh ya, and Lift tickets are FREE tomorrow at Mammoth for opening day! I'd be out there getting some turns in but will be to swamped making sure everything stays up and running with the increased traffic to our web site.

Great Frist Ride With Brahm

First off the GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Brahm for showing me around his back yard. We did 17.5 miles on up to 1.5 of snow. It was set up and melting fast in the warm Oct weather.

On My Way To Glass Mtn

After a good ride with Brahm. I headed out to one of my "old" stomping grounds @ Crooked Mdw. I did another 11 miles here and would like to have done more put ran out of snow.
Area on San Joaquin Ridge We rode. The Flat area on the left ridge line is where we rode. All above 10000 ft.

Had a great time riding down south and will be back this year when we have more snow. ;)

Great !!!

Where did you unload to ride San Joaquin Ridge ?

It is my understanding you cannot unload at the Mammoth Ski resort area?

Hey John it was good meeting/riding with you. Thanks for posting the picture!

Crooked Meadow looks good up top.

I got back out today, but more to just test out some changes I made to the sleds yesterday. It was looking really barren I was surprised at how much melted between today and yesterday, launching from the cinder shed is going to be a no go until the next storm..I'm pretty sure I did some good wear to my hyfaxes just trying to get out there again today. Unfortunately or fortunately the ski area is closed again, so we can launch from higher... ...but I don't think the road up to the ridge will be ride able anymore if the melt off was anything like what it was down lower. Todays snow/rain pretty much came down as hail I'll check things out tomorrow when I head into to work to see if they got any snow at a higher alt .

well it's snowing again, sadly though not enough to make a difference after the warm up that's going to happen the rest of the week. Oh well guess it could be worse good time to keep working on the sled, at least I'm not waiting on parts over powder days.

A little more and you can get to the good stuff. This wasn't like 1994 as they say. In 1994, Crater flats had 3 feet of fresh.

And I don't remember them losing it.

Brahm, let me know when the road can be ridden. I really want to take out the new Dragon for a quick spin to test the clutching and suspension. Seeing it sit in the driveway makes me Grumpy.

ahh.. will do, ha, I thought this was Mica from the garage.. it all makes sense now :)

Thanks. We got a dusting here in town but it started as rain around lunch and seems to be done. Looks like I'll have to wait another week or so.

there is snow that stuck to the ground up here and up the road but not much you could probably make it but it would be quite a bit of on and off snow riding to get to the ridge, when I rode yesterday there was a fair bit of dirt to get out definitely put some wear on the hifaxes everything is soft web and muddy thought so not to bad on the track.

I can wait. The last thing I need to do is break it on the first day. After driving from Shasta to Portland and back to here in a day, I don't think I can sit in a car long enough to get parts at thin air.

well if you find yourself heading up that way on a weekend for any reason let me know I've been wanting to make a trip to check it out. I kind dead in the water at the moment I pulled apart my rave and found some broken parts just ordered replacements but won't have them in until the 30th, if there is a magic dump I can put it back together enough to ride but that would involve fishing out the bolts that I dropped to the bottom of the belly pan hahahah.
