making a trip out west, where to go?

a few buddies and i are wanting to make a trip out west this spring break (march) to do some off trail boon-docking, jumping, and maybe a little powder riding, i know we will be limited with shorter tracks. we where thinking about cooke city, found a sweet place to stay in a cabin, but have had a few people tell me its to "extreme". we do know how to ride.

I think you would be the only people heading for Cooke that didn't want it to dump on them. I would not call all of Cooke extreme, but you would definitely be limited by short tracks if it dumped.

I would look at the Snowys or the BigHorns, more options if it dumps.

Just my $.02

Cooke is good, but you may get limted if it dumbs on a shortrack.

If this is your first time out west, I would consider West Yellowstone or Island Park. They have a great trail system on lots of play areas. You can play in some deep stuff just off trail to get used to riding in powder (espcially the short tracks). If you get bored with the short tracks their are alot of rental companies and you can rent some long tracks.

From MN it is about the same drive time as Cooke to go to West Yellowstone. Likewise, there are lots of places to stay, and a little more nightlife (if you want nightlife).

West Yellow Stone is also a good place to check out.
Tail system allows you to get off the trail to play in meadows without getting in too deep.
Make sure your sleds are jetted for the elevation change and read up on some avy training.
Check the Travel section on here some good links and info.

I would go to Togwotee, lots of trails, plenty of meadows, backcountry boondocking and big hills to play on. The accommodations are great, a bit pricey but worth it imo. Cooke is fun if you like climbing. You can ride to On Top of the World on Hwy 212 and find some play areas. Snow as we all know can make or break a trip. But lack of snow with short trackers doesn't hurt quite as bad. Last time we were at cooke it was beat up bad and going up the hills was pretty easy and fast, but coming down was mach fast and sometimes down right scary.

I've never been to cooke but I've heard its more vertical than either the bighorns or yellowstone. After going to the bighorns last march I would say go there. It seemed like there was a more diverse selection of terrain there than where I rode at yellowstone. Rode a 136 rmk in both yellowstone and bighorns and had as much fun as the 156 and 154's I rode with, just takes some track poaching and momentum.

If your spring break correlates hit Jackson Hole and take in THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SNOWMBILE HILLCLIMB. You can ride about ten different areas from an hour south to an hour north of Jackson plus there is some killer riding right outside of town. Take in the hillclimb which is the #1 snowmobile event in the west and ride some cool terrain as well. Fun and happening night life...coolest hot rod hillclimber sleds...tons of sled stuff being vended at discount year end prices...beer...ONE OF THE COOLEST FREESTYLE SHOWS ON EARTH TAKES PLACE AS WELL. GOOD REDNECK FUN!

Togwatee 90 miles north
Jackson Bowls on Teton Pass 12 miles west
Alpine Wy 40 miles south
Afton Wy 80 miles south

Day by day it tie in Sat Sun of hillclimb...Snowmobile vacation of a lifetime...and if youre SUPER lucky you might meet me:D!

I would have to say this is the best advice so far. Missing the hillclimb as a snowmobiler is like a hippie missing Woodstock!:beer;:beer;

F-Bomb brings up a good point! Rode Cooke for 20 years. You'll want long tracks, beacons, etc. if you go there! If it were me I'd ride the Snowies for a day or two, drive the 5 hours stay at the Super 8(cheap) in Dubois and ride the Continental Divide for a day or two and then hit Jackson for the rest. You'd be riding 2 of the top 5 riding areas in one trip. Have fun ripping the white chit up:D

I'll throw in my vote for Fremont Co, Id. Lots of good on and off trail, should be able to enjoy the short tracks no matter the conditions you will find good stuff. Lots to choose from in Island Park, Ashton area, its inexpensive and plentiful. Stay away from Jackson, it's overpriced, overrated, lots of extreme wealthy posers and rude person's. Good local nightlife if you have alot of cash to burn for the novelty. A good sale in Jackson is still 50 percent higher than the rest of the country.

with short tracks I'd go to the Big Horns or Snowies. If the snow is too deep you can always go to lower elevations and find good riding. Also the diverse selection of terrain gives you plenty of options. There is open meadows, some climbing, boondocking in the trees, and trail riding.

These guys have trips out west scheduled.

Throw your sled in their semi, let them do the driving.
room for 24 sleds and 18 riders.

Different trips scheduled to : Togwotee, Cooke, Island Park, Snowies, Colorado, and Utah. Departing from Michigan and heading west picking YOU and YOUR sled up along the way.
