M8 vs. M1000

When I got my M1000 I helped do the PDI right out of the crate. The spec sheet said it weighed 482 dry out of the crate with the boss seat. So I would say not to bad for a big sled. The M8 I belkieve was 460? So 200 more cc's and 20 more lbs. Since then Ive put a timbersled intake and a D&D pipe setup on and dropped like 30+ lbs off the front end. I added all the venting I could to keep er all cool. A RKT secondary dones the clutching system and I would recommend this kit to anyone. It made a huge difference. All in all no complaints for my 1000 as of yet, a few minor fueling issues but it was easy to diagnose and conquer........................

I love my 800. If I could do it over again I would buy the same sled. It is so easy to ride. You pick a line and it takes it, I don't even think you have to move your body. It takes me places I shouldn't be so I am sure the 1000 would get me in trouble ;)

If you go with the m1000 be prepared to spend money! Not because you have to, but because you'll want to! How can you resist 20 more horsepower for only $600ish for an SLP pipe setup (PS - it ain't 190HP with just a pipe!!!)? Well, you'll need an EFI box too - $300. and an intake $200. And some updated clutching - $300. And an O2 guage or EGTs - $250 to $350. Don't forget gearing down! There's another $250. chit - that's $2000!!!

That being said, when i did all the mods to my 2008 M1000 SP it was a total bad ***. I just got pissed at Cat for boning me on belts and making me engineer a fix myself. so i ditched 'em for now. Going to try and ride a "stock" sled this year and bought an XP.

SO - that all being said, i'd get a 2010 M8 SP if i were you. The 1000 is sweet though, but you are goind to end up modding it and that's a slipperly slope - unless you like tuning and monkeying around with it.

if you've got a woody for a 1000 though, do yourself a favor and buy a 2009. it's worth the extra money for a newer sled with a better track and a much better gear box. You'll actually save money by getting the newer one...

My 1000 was a real beast and when she was on, it was a damn fine sled. A true boondocking savage w/ *****in' suspension and balls the size of king kongs that could climb like a rapped ape too.

Mod guy or 200lb rider go M1K.

I don't think it's the riders size and weight that makes the difference, it's their riding style. I'm only 6'2" 155 and I absolutely love my 1000. I don't do much climbing, but for boondocking and cutting through the trees in deep powder it rocks, and with the torque you don't have to have it to the bars. My 1000 is pretty close to stock, but the torque of that engine makes the huge difference to me and I still would choose it over the 2010 M8 for that reason.

my 2 cents.

again

As has been said in these threads many times..

I've never had a situation where I've said to myself...

"well you know, that was just TOO much power"

Go 1000 and don't look back, weight is negligible IMHO, but the power sure isn't. Places where 8's peter out.. the 1000 is still pulling skis. Stock for stock the 1000 is just an animal. Runs with almost every mod sled I've ridden with and stock I think we all know the story. I'm a larger guy (6'2" 235 in gear) and I never have any problems getting the sled to do what I want.

And there are so many mod options if you choose that route. More over... just go out and enjoy the damn thing!!

Just my .02. Only had a year on it and I'm still trying to get the whole thing figured out myself. Mr. Quick and backcountryislife have had some very informational posts that have helped me understand the process behind the 1000, even though it does get expensive, but hell it's a hobby!

I made an educated decision to buy my first M8 in 2007, and another educated decision to buy my second M8 in 2009. I've ridden with plenty of M1000 guys and personally would go with the M8 again if I was buying a new sled this year. The weight difference IS noticable between the two. We spend thousands of $$ taking weight off our sleds, but then when it comes to the M1000 everybody says that the extra 20-30lbs is "no big deal". For boondocking and technical riding with some steep climbs a well tuned M8 is the choice for me. Both are clearly very nice machines however. The M chassis is hard to beat for an all around good sled.

Just an FYI, as a sometimes access rider, if you're going to access ride get the BIGGEST BADDEST sled you can afford. The 07 skid was better for access riding than the newer ones. For sledskiing, I feel the 07 M1000 was a phenomenal sled, the newer ones I've owned have been more fun, but not as good at getting 400+ lbs up the hill smoothly.

Lot's of awesome info in this topic! Now that we have talked to though the weight issue, and the 1000's power/torque advantage. What is the reliability of 1000 like if left pretty much stock? I am on the fence between an M8, and an M1000 as well. Will be an 09 either way. Heard from two dealers that they both hadn't had to rebuild an M8 motor as of yet. That impressed me. Is a fairly stock 1000 known for the same reliability? By fairly stock I mean Y pipe and can, (possibly full pipe) If a full pipe set then a PC3 as well, maybe intake, and clutching. I come from a sled that would eat a motor on average every 250 miles. So I need reliability in my next sled. Does the 1000 offer it like the m8 does? Or should I rather stick to an M8 with a pipe and clutching and be happy?

I have a 2007 m1000 that is moded as far as i can take it without boost and I really love it. Its on a 75 lbs diet with a 220hp race motor and I have had no problems beating alot of m8 turbos (PG) and myn feels alot lighter and more responsive to ride. No lag!! A N/a m8 isnt even close to being in the same league. My brother has a 2008 m1000 with your basic petty mods(y-pipe,pipe,intake,can) it kills everything thats not on boost and it will even run with pgtm8,s! Unless your going to turbo your M8 or your afraid of hp go with the 1000 and spend an exta 1000 in mods. If you want a good running stock sled get the 2010 M8 sp they rip best running stock sled I have seen out of the box! just my thoughts!

Thanks. :) Good to hear from someone with a mod. I'm now leaning toward an 09 M1000 153. Yesterday the M1000 wasn't even an option, I was set on an M8, but it sounds like the 1000 might be the way to go. O I'm not scared of HP. :D But I don't think I will be turboing anything. Not really practical for most of my riding. But a 180 ish hp M1000 sounds good to me. How snappy are they? I'm coming from a D8, so I'm used to snappy power. But I'm willing to give some of that up for a reliable 180 HP sled. I was looking at the 2010, but it's a bit much money right now. And I'm scared of any unproven motor. Cat has a good track record, but it still freaks me out seeing how my last sled treated me.

After reading all the threads about the m1 going through belts faster than Oprah and stock ones burning down I ended up going with an M8. I was dead set on the M1, but decided I didn't want any headaches. I'm shure there will be some really deep days that I will regret it...

the stock 09 m1000 is reliable just like the m8. My stock with slp can only 09 m1000 mad a few D8's look like 600cc, not even the same league. problems come with mods if you know what your doing theres nothing to worry about. My first belt lasted 450 miles then pulled a cord, still working great but I put a new one on.

I went from a rg m8 to a rg m1000 and have never looked back!!!:D

Thats what Im talkin about!

AS far as the reliability on the 1000, Mine is a twin-pipe setup with about 2500 miles and no engine issues whatsoever. Yeah the belt thing was headache to get figured out, but there are so many threads now with good info. I wouldnt let that keep me from buying one. I would do it again. The main thing to consider is no matter what you do to a M1k you can do to an M8 and the M1k will always be 20lbs heavier. And unfortunately its right in the nose. My sled is close to 20lbs lighter than a stock M8 yet the M8 feels lighter to ride. Get one of each:D

Mod guy or 200lb rider go M1K. If you are a sissy go with the M8. Hahahaha! Just kidding, dont anybody get all pissed:face-icon-small-hap

OK now I am a sissy fine :face-icon-small-dis Oh I was wondering when you were going to get a truck cause its enbarassing you showing up on the mountain with a sled on top of your CAR HA HA :D
