m8 vs m1000 pros cons

M1000s feel really nose heavy to me, and just heavier in general (obviously). 1000s are finicky as far as mods and tuning go compared to 800s. And your not actually getting much more power from a 1000, not enough that would make me feel its worth it anyways. I would any day get a 800 over 1000.

Sorry I have to disagree. If you are planning on keeping the sled stock and weight under 200 lbs the M800 would be better but if you plan on doing some minor mods they really wake up the M1000. You don't get much gain with mods on a M800 because they are about maxed from the factory unless you get a turbo. The M1000 is a little nose heavy but when your on the throttle you don't notice it.

If you weight over 200lbs get them M1000 put some pipes, extra motor mounts, airbox, MDS weights, Powder Pro Ski's on it and ride the he11 out of it. That is what I have on mine and its been a great pull and go sled for 3 years now and I have not had to touch it. I have never ran accrossed a M800 that can come close unless it has a turbo. I added the 2.6 PowerClaw last year and it made the M1000 even more of a monster.

x3 -- 1000's nose heavy.

I had a 2007 m1000 for 3 seasons... ran stronger than an 800 for sure, but if you are going to throw it around in the trees, the 800 is a no-brainer if you buy 2010 or newer. Prior to 2010, the 800's were only 145hp, so the 1000 seemed like a reasonable idea to me back then. If you like hi-marking, then the 1000 may be for you so you can beat your normally aspirated buddies on their 800's with your lightly modded 1000.... but a 1000 running 6 pounds of boost... I hear that can be A LOT of fun!

With some porting, head and pipe the pre 2010s can easily run with the 2010s and up, but in stock form yes they are underpowered. I heard boost on any cat can be a lot of fun...

To me this is more what kind of driving you like to do type question. If you like to go fast up-down direction, get M1000 and release the power of the big block. In stock form it's not impressive... it NEEDS mods.

If you are driving more sideways (sidehilling in the trees), get the M8. Nose is very light and it handles like champion. There's reason why you can still see these M8s in the sled movies doing the good stuff along with those shiny new models ;) Get -10 or newer if you don't get hands dirty, or older one to mod it to -10 style...

Some of you guys need a check up, no offense but I've proven this over and over.

If your going stock go with a '10+ M8 (or 09 slp piped) hands down will be a better sled.

If you want to mod "and know how"!!! The m1000 will stomp a hole in the M8 if you know how to set it up and tune right.

Every single person that rode my M1000 said they couldn't tell a difference in weight other than you had to hang on more from the power. Its all in "proper" suspension and clutching!!!

But the M1000 will also cost you more money in the long run, especially if you don't know exactly how to tune. They are awesome sleds but I would take my '12 M8 setup the way I had mine over my mod m1000. Which has not been beat by a M8 with a rider the same weight in a straight up pull, but I can kill it on a proclimb in the trees and not with a M8. Again If setup!!!!! right! the m1000 is still a monster. Would I own one, no, I would either get a boosted M8 or a pro climb.

hey now lets not be a bunch of GIRLS here

I added 51 lbs. to my M-1000 and love it , check out my vidio in cat turbo and see how 300 h.p. seems so light , its so light i cant keep it from flipping over backwards

I'm 6'6 240 had 1000 for 6 years, now I'm 50 years old and at the end of the day I was beat.So I sold it and got a pro climb, love how it lays over and the power.my problem is I'm still old and still big. Both sleds were stock exept can.I do ride better at the end of the day cuz I'm not as tired.

Dude did you not look at my age on my post ??? I know one guy who just loves the 800 for its light feeling and all he will ride its to each their own prefrence, the 1100 is realy heavy

If you want to out climb your buddies on 800s then get the 1000 stick with a y pipe and can motor mounts and heavy primary weights for mods. Those mods are not a big deal in my opinion and really wake up the old big block. In needs to be held back to 7300 rpm to really get the power out of it so just get the adjustable weights if your buying new weights anyways. Mine still beats up on my friends new summits and rmks so I'm keeping it for another few years. It's 5 years old now and getting worn out but as long as I can take down brand new $14000 sleds I'm happy.

I am not really worried about weight the sled I have now is 900 mountain cat. The sled I would get through out time I would putting mods on it so witch sled would work best with mods for the engine and what is the best years in these sleds you have found from 07 to 10.

Ive put 1500 miles on my 2008 M1000. Has the usual gutting done to it (airbox, can, HRP skid). I personally cannot tell a difference weight wise between the 07-09 m8 and my snowmobile. I can maneuver it anywhere an 8 can go. Havent ridden an m8 enough to put out a personal opinion, but I know I am extremely satisfied with my 1000. Original clutch, DD, and to the best of my knowledge top end (new top end ordered). 3400 miles, no problems other than the rock/stump finding a-arms.

The later series m1000 had a better clutch on them, and there was also the 09 update that was released for previous year snowmobiles.

I rode the 900 also before the 1000, if you go 800 you will say what happend to my power and the m-series handle way better than the 900, in the 1000 the newer the better

Go with a 10+ M8, you won't be disappointed. If your a bigger guy, 220+ then I would say to consider the 1000, but for that reason only. The 800 is a bulletproof motor, that has a ton of room for improving the sled overall. There are so many Aftermarket parts available that it can be as fun as you want it to! Not bashing the 1000, I've ridden both of them, but unless your willing to drop 2k into into it to try and make it feel lighter like the M8, don't go that route. And I'm sure people like WYO have done this before and got it to perform like a lighter nimble sled...but what's the point when your in the position to get the one you want first? Like I said, shop around for a good, clean 10 or 11 M8 and you won't be disappointed.

the m1000 progression

07 m1000-162 weighed 530lbs dry-162Hp
08 m1000- lost 8 lbs off the skid-162Hp
09 m1000- lost 22 lbs with electronic reverse-162 HP, tunnel mod ,and Power Claw. added
2010-2011 m1000 really dialed in the rear suspsension- much better ride than previous years
2010 A/C came out with the H.O motor in the M8- 165 HP, and a better seat.
M1000 with a SLP- pipe set- 193 HP about 18 lbs lighter than stock.
in 2010 M8-162 was 466 lbs dry

I have a bud running 08 m8 as moded as it gets even has 10 crank my 1000( moded to the hilt without turbo) stomps the piss out of the 8. I run a 162 track and im 200lb with gear and ride the trees, don't care about hill climbing to much. If you like raw power that just keeps on pulling go 1000. The 8 is a great sled though and does feel lighter.
I would go with the best conditioned sled you find 8 or 1000. Just dont buy a rental
