debating on whether or not to buy one of the following:

'09 M8 153"
'10 M8 153"
'09 Dragon 155"
'10 Dragon 155"

also considering HCR and Assault (the 146" is a turn off)

Im aware of most of the advantages of both, it may come down to price.

opinions and comparisons are welcome and appreciated

1 '09 M8 153" great proven sled and should find one out the door for around 8k
2 '10 M8 153" Should be an awsome sled but not yet proven and more $$$
4 '09 Dragon 155" Will need engine top end update in poo ever gets it out and you will be like the ten millionth person in line
3 '10 Dragon 155" lots of $$$

post this in the poo section to get the other "unbiased opinions" I like riding each of them a lot but feel the 09 m8 will be the best bang for the buck.

good luck and post what you decide.

Very rarely do I ever see a post that agree with as much as 76FOMOCO's post above.

I think he nailed it!

Except....... there's always and one little thing.

Just something to think about, I'd think about a 09 M8 162". I was told by many people that the 09 153" would be much more "fun" than a 162" and about 95% as capable in the deep (and maybe it is).

So, I bought a 09 M8 153" sno pro and love it but, in the really deep stuff a couple times I was thinking maybe I should have maybe have gotten the 162". I wasn't getting stuck (my buddies all were) but, man was it close a few times. I weight about 170. Just something to think about.

I'm happy as a clam with my 09. This is my fist Cat too. I am coming off a Yamaha most recently. The Cat 800 engines seemed to be by far the most reliable 800 two stroke out there, from rather extensive my research.

x3,4,or 5, exactly right!

I snowchecked a 153" M8 LE, can't wait! I currently ride poo and if it weren't for the problems the 800 has been having I would have gotten one but I decided to give Cat a shot, I'll be the only one in our group with one so I hope it does me good.

I have owned 2 M7 162s and loved them but recently I have spent time on the new Polaris chassis and loved it too. better all around chassis I think, will not work as well in the deepest of snow or climb as well as the M chassis in my opinion but the ride and feel is better than the M7. now i know the new M8 ('09 and up) is much improved but what is better and how much better than the m7??

and like i said, i have owned 2 162s and there is no denying they are superior than the 153" in the deepest of snow but that happens just a handful of times per season for me and I think??? that the 153-155" might be a better all around track length as far as fun goes. I like the new assault but just cannot fathom going back to 146", even though I only weigh 170lbs. thoughts??

now i am aware of the motor upgrade on the '10 M8, but if I can save a grand or two how much would i be giving up with an '09, i do plan a few small mods: pipe, intake, would this put me closer to the '10 M8 for less $

I have a 163 D-8..ride with an assault..it is a joy to ride..so much fun to flick around vrs the 163 and even the 155....it still goes on the deep days but you must keep your momentum up alot more then with the other 2...As far as the 08 and 09 cats vrs the dragon..put the camo extreme on the dragon and at the minumum it will run the steep and deep as good if not better then the cat..both excellent sleds..comes down to dealer and price to me....

I haven't rode either but from what I have read, the difference from 07-08-09 in the M chassis is night and day.

Ride'em Both

I rode the 09' M8 (153") last year and the track isn't enough for my size, 253lbs, but it handled well. The stock ski's need to go and the power leaves a little to be desired, but it handled basically everything even for an Ogre like me and feels *****in'. It comes down to what each offers for what you're looking for. Track is a consideration too. There's a lot to be said for the Powerclaw, but there are other tracks out there too, i.e.- Camo Extreme. Keep in mind everything aside from the chassis and engine (even some dispute there) can be replaced if it doesn't suit your needs. The M1000 is going to be a heavier sled w/o much gain in power at least for this year and you can make up for that on the 09' in other ways. I've looked at everything as well and weighed the cost to benefit then ordered my 2010 M8, but it's what I like. What suits you will be different. All these sleds will kick A$$ either way.

When I was looking last season there were a couple sleds that REALLY caught my eye.

One was the Polaris Assault. They were selling new for $7,999 at the time when I was looking and I just loved the raw look and red hood but.......... It needed several things to be the mountain sled I wanted it to be. It needed a longer track and tunnel (155), a narrowed ski stance and a mountain bar (easy fix). Then I read up on the engine related issues affecting the 09 800 Polaris engines and got a little spooked. Funny, I thought the 08 800's didn't have that many engine related issues?

I also just loved the Skidoo Summit XP 154". I found a pretty decent deal on the blue and white version but, once again reading Dootalk about the engine and revised clutching related issue spooked me.

I have always hated Cats. I grew up in Northern Minnesota riding Skidoos and the Neighbors riding Cats or Scorpions. I have called Cats "ditch pickles" for years because they always seemed to be broken down on the side of the trail.

Imagine my suprise when I began to see a pattern developing showing the Arctic Cat 800 engine seemed to be the most reliable of the current crop of 800s. Yuck, not me on a Arctic Cat! My wife and daughter wanted to dis-own me for even talking about it.

I have never much cared for the Arctic Cat green (yuck) so it seemed a white Sno Pro was the only way to go for me. Then I couldn't decide between a M1000 or a M8 until a very kind dealer allowed me to ride both back to back. It was very clear to me that I wanted a M8.

Then it was the decision of 153" or 162"? I had planned on a 162" but, after many very well respected Cat people telling me "what ever you do, make sure you get a 153". I ended up with a 153". It is funner than he!! and my riding skill has improved incredibly because this sled is at least 100 lbs. lighter than my Rx-1. I was doing stuff I had no idea I knew how to do. I was picking super technical lines through the trees because I felt very confident on the sled. I would have never even tried on my Rx-1.

For 90% of the time the 153" is plenty of track.Yet, on the super deep days I was longing for a 162" and for only a 2 lb weight penalty, I think that going with the 162" provides more benefit than penalty.

After I bought my 09 M8 153" Sno Pro I was very happy, until the 2010's were released. I had done my best to wait for all the 2010 model introductions but, I didn't quite make it until the Cats were released. Yes, I got a great buy on my M8 and my rationale was, I could have the engine work I wanted done and still be cheaper than a 2010 M8. But..............what I failed to remember was, that once the engine work is done, the warranty is no longer valid. With the 2010 you get the power and the warranty.

That's something to consider.

I have ridden both. I like the d8 on the trail and moderate climbs. But the M8 out performs in the deep and steep. It handles angles better and the track hookups way better. I am waiting for my boss seat to come in and this next year with a new slp pipe and can It should beat the d-8 my buddy rides in all conditions. Need to work on the trail ride shock set up on the fox floats. Other than that I bought the cat because of the reliability of the engine.

Somebody should buy my assualt so I can get a new 10 kitty

LMAO!!!! That right there is funny!

I would love to buy a new 10 M8. My buddy has the 09 D8 and its a great sled but our 07 M8 will hang with it and his is a 163 and the m8 is a 141. The 10 M8 should rock!!:beer; JMO
