M8 or M1000??

Im looking at getting a sled in the next few months but i wanna do a little research first. I've decided to get a M8 or M1000, but im not to sure of anything to watch out for on either of these sleds. I've heard that the 07 8's were not that great due to clutching and fuel mapping but thats it. Another factor that im not sure of is that im only 160lbs...is the 1000 much heavier or harder to throw around? Im coming off of a ZR chassis with a 162" track so im thinking either way its not gonna be as bad as that sled. Also the sled is only gonna be rode in the mountains, i have a sno pro to ride around home. Any input is appreciated, thank you.

Never been on a M8, but factory clutching is factory clutching. You can typically do better with any stock sled for a specific condition than how the clutching rolls off the assembly line. 07 M8's can get the 08 ECU flash to bring them up to spec, maybe for free??
Comparing my wife's M7 to the M1k I just bought and have only ridden a couple times in less than ideal conditions, I don't think the M1k is any harder to throw around (but it is about 25lbs lighter in front than stock, so real close to the 7's & 8's weight wise). BTW my wife, 5'3" can pull the M7 over on it's side without issue, no bar risers, so you'll be fine with either one.

i have a m8 and my dad has the m1000 both are 08.. when mine was stock i didnt like the power it had. i would jump on my dads and it would be just as easy to throw around as mine and had a noticeable power increase...you can also do what i did and get a turbo for an m8 and and power will not be an issue....if you plan on keeping it stock or close to id go for the m1000

I have an 07 M8 162, I have about 1300 miles on it and I haven't had any issues with it. I've done all the factory reflashes and it remains trouble free. I weigh about 160. I've ridden a couple M 1000's and they are indeed heaver but I don't really think it would be much on an issue. It sounds like from reading the forum and talking to a couple friends the M 1000 has a few more motor concerns. I know a couple people have siezed the motor with 800 to 1000 miles on it. There's a couple threads going on about it. If you do some work on the M8 it can be pretty sick. IMO it lacks a little power when stock but the SLP pipe kit seems to help a lot. Clutching is fairly easy fix on the M8, the CPC and RKT kits help a lot. They run about $250 plus what ever spring you want to run. There are several easy ways to lighten the front of the M8 and I would assume the M1000 as well. Fact is, you will always be able to make an M8 lighter than the M1000. I would rather have the lighter sled and over come the power difference in mods. SLP's set up with the pipe, shaving the head, porting, boondocker box, intake and reeds makes a pretty sick sled that is claimed to be close to 170hp. I've riden one set up with this and its amazing. If you take the cost difference and apply it aftermaket mods for you M8 I think you would be in love.

Ditto !! I also have an '07 M8 an LOVE it.

The local cat shop told me when I was making the exact same decision, that the M8 will actually out climb the M1000 out of the box due to a different gear and clutch setup. Don't know if thats true, but combine that with the price difference and what you could do with that money on aftermarket mods... That made up my mind. Good luck

Take the 1000 you will not notice the weight difference when riding only when digging it out. Stock for stock the 1000 will clobber an 800, even with the 800 being piped,y-pipe,can,head,airbox mod etc a well clutched stock 1000 will still clobber it. Put the same mods on a 1000 pipe,y-pipe,can,head,airbox and your getting the 1000 roughly the same weight and close to the 190/190+hp range. Ride with a nitroused M8 and it still has a tough time when on the bottle going where a buddies M1000 with y pipe,can and clutching goes. I have a modded 1000 with a Boss seat,holz full float rear skid,holz front suspension with floats,speedwerx y-pipe,speedwerx single,speedwerx can,rkt head,rkt clutch kit,vohx mod air box/bra assembly,gutted hood,side vents, flowrites and bullseyes throughout,etc,etc. I would say it is now lighter than a 8 easily and has power like no other for just simple cheap mods done to it. If real power hungry a turboed 1000 is the way to go. My lil bro is around 140lbs and has been riding a full mod lightweight D&D race prepped M8 on the bottle for a couple years now. One ride on mine and what do you think he is buying this year a new 1000. He says he would never go back to a 800 after riding the 1000. He said you do not notice the weight difference at all but he said you certainly notice the power difference the 1000 has. He said he has to be spraying his all the time to go where I go whereas on mine its not throttle to the bar all the time to get to the top like his. Go 1000 you will not be dissapointed.

Like I said, if money is an issue, put the extra into the M8 on mods and you will be plesantly surprised. If it is pure HP that you are after, then "go big or go home". Of course nothing will touch a fully moded out M1000 .

Well im not totally after all the HP i can get and money is somewhat of an issue. I would really like to get an 08 sno pro so i have the nice gauge and the white hood, they look so much nicer i think. I have found some used 08 M8 sno pros for around $6500, which i think is a decent price?? Its harder to find a 1000, especially a white one but they are going for way more than 6500. My thought was to get a 8 and maybe invest the price difference into mods? I also thought about doing a turbo a couple years down the road and i honestly dont see the need to have a 1000 turbo, an 800 would be plenty enough grunt for me. Also i would only ride the sled twice a year about when making trips to the mountains.

I bought an 07 M8 last year , i was planning on a turbo. I cant stand to ride it without boost, i am starting to wish i had got an M1000. I rode it once last year , dont get me wrong i had fun.

I never want to ride a sled with less than 200 hp ever again , i guess i am spoiled. It will be fun next year on race fuel. But i would be lying if i said my next sled wont be a TM1000.:beer;

The 1000 is 165 to 170 hp stock, the 800 can make the same hp with porting, Y pipe, pipe, boondocker, your looking at $1500 or more in mods plus clutching, and you loose the stock reliability.. In the long run its always cheaper to buy the bigger sled than to try and mod a smaller one to run with the big dogs..

+1 i doubt the 1000 would be all that much heavier than the 800 and after a while if you wanted better handleing just get some skis and if you want more power get a turbo and a boondocker efi controler

.reading this thread and the longer or shorter thread , it sounds like 1000 162 is only way to go for everything. just got a m8-153 myself, coming off a 700 xf136&144 x1.75 i was thinking the hp thing would be pretty on par with what i had been used to riding and ok with. i considered first , the deal i got was decent to par at the time and not as many 1000s around then, also reading about more 1000 engine problems did catch my attention ( crank, pto side cyl ) , even if it was a valid concern or not. also the 800 has a knock sensor? or something where the 1000 doesnt. 800 being lighter had some merit also , what is it , 25 lbs lighter? considering i was planning on shaving anouther 20-30 off it. after mods i was hoping for a sled close to 155 hp ( 1000 is 162 ? ) and 50 lbs lighter. for my level of game play at this time i hope its a good fit

If you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all. Untill Cats are non-existant i will be riding them

I don't think either the 800 or 1000 Cat is worth buying. Junk.

Just a comment from a idiot that doesn't know what he's talking about. You can brand bash all you want but to say that a cat is junk and isn't worth buying is just ignorant. I'm not a huge skidoo fan because of the issues with the new XP and I don't think that skidoo is working as hard as they should be to fix them, but having said that I also think they are nice sleds, handle well and have great stock HP. Polaris has the dragon which from what I have seen of it looks to be a great sled. I think if I was looking for a new sled and could afford a dragon I would look into them.

Until you have something useful to say you should probably just shut up and read. In your 3 posts have you made an intelligent well informed comment? I'll go out on a limb here and say I'm 95% positive that my M8 will walk all over whatever you're riding and still make it back to the truck at the end of the day. Rant over.

AGREED! :D:beer;
