Lost Dog in Snowies

Your Welcome! I am a firm believer that most dogs are inherently good and want to listen and make you happy, you just need to find a way to connect with them and make them realize what you want them to do. Almost all dogs want nothing more in the world than to make their owners happy.

Unfortunately training dogs takes a GREAT deal of time to be do effectively.
Most people simply lack the time and patients to do this, and resort to things like yelling and punishment to train a dog. Your dog is never going to learn anything by you screaming at it or hitting it except to be scared of you. Shocking it and expecting it to listen and learn isnt going to help things much either.

A dog that loves you and thinks your its best friend will do WAY more for you than a dog that is scared of you ever will. You cant expect ANY dog, no matter how smart it is to become trained in a week and keep that training forever without you continuing to work with the dog on a weekly and monthly basis.

IMO if you dont have time to train your dog and give him/her the love and attention, exercise, food, and training that he/she needs to be smart, safe and happy then you have no business having a dog in the first place. A dog does not belong tied up out in the yard or locked in a kennel day after day.

A dog to me is like another member of your family, its a life time commitment, and IMO a dog and its behavior is a direct reflection of its owner. Your relationship with your dog is just like your relationship with say your children our your spouse, it is constantly growing and evolving.

My Current Golden is almost 4 and has learned alot in those 4 years. She is VERY smart, but we still go over things all the time and grow on the things that she knows. Right now we are working on advancing our hand signal only training, a very difficult frustrating process for us both I might add lol. As long as she is willing to learn I am willing to train her. She is a ball of personality and seems to love it. Shes gets so serious sometimes its almost funny.

Its amazing what they will do for you once they understand what your trying to tell them. I personally dont believe in the shock collar method but your right it is a good an effective method when used properly. Animals are MUCH more sensitive to electricity than we are, so it doesn't take a very big shock to get your point across. I use a dog whistle and I find it to be just as if not more effective.

Anyway sorry for being long winded I am just passionate about dogs. I am glad your dog was found safe and will be returned to his owner. I agree with Quads West though a trained dog is a safe dog.

Great message!

What if the dog is young? (the owner hasn't had "a lot of time working with him." What if the owner doesn't hunt? The poster mentioned that it wasn't his dog, it's his father in law's dog. It's logical to assume that the dog might not respond to his voice.
Quad, you seem to have a 'no excuses' attitude when it comes to dogs. What if some people have a dog only to love it?

If you love your dog, you'll train it! I love my dog, I hunt with my dog, I wrestle my dog, I let him sleep in the house, but I also train him every chance I get. Teaching your dog to come EVERY time you call is essential for its safety (such as when your dog is in the mtns and wants to run away when there are sub-zero temps at night). Just like I taught my dog not to chit on my carpet or piss on my couch, I also constantly teach him to come to me when I call. He knows I'm the boss and he wants to please me so much, he'll do whatever I tell him to....no matter what. TRAINING!!!!!!!! Until he was ready to obey me and I could 100% trust him, I didn't let him off the leash when we were out where he could get himself into trouble (next to a busy street, in public, anywhere he could see a rabbit or other animal that he would chase, etc). I also worked with him and collar conditioned him to the shock collar so he would know exactly what it meant if he ever felt the nick. He knows now that if he doesn't come back when I call him, he's gonna get the nick and that means GET YOUR AZZ BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!!!! No exceptions. With this is the most important step....consistency. If you aren't consistent, the dog will never know what the hell you're trying to tell him to do. As you can see from my posts, I am VERY passionate about dogs and training them. My brother and I run hunt tests with our labs and are very successful at it. Two things that really annoy the chit outta me, 1) an untrained dog and 2) a FAT dog.

Spot on bro.

Dear QuadsWest, time to grow up a bit

First off the original topic of this post was to help find a lost dog, glad luke was found btw. But, the post was about helping find a dog, not about your opinion of how a man should train his dog. Think of it this way, if i were to walk up to you on the street hearing you're child was lost and say, "Hey, I think you should change your parenting so you don't lose your child." Would you not be offended? Some may seem "sensitive" to you, but they're defending their right to their own opinions and practices.
Second off, some call you an a$*hole, and quite frankly I agree. And on that remark, no, someone doesn't think they can fight you on the phone. They want you to communicate like a man at least in voice, instead of hiding behind your computer screen like a preteen kid in a chatroom picking fights with people whom you don't know from joe on the street.
Honestly, grow up and learn to just have a bit of empathy. If you have nothing productive and useful to say then please keep your comments to yourself. These forums are for updates and help, not selfish pr*cks like you to come in and bash good people.
Anyway, I'm glad your dog was found, and thanks to the ski-patrol, they really do work wonders. Just my .02 cents to those that care to read

In following your excellent use of logic, I hope to never cross a thread where you are offering advice or opinion unless it was specifically solicited. I'll hang on to a copy of this post just for that occasion and send it to you. You're welcome and thanks for showing me the light.
