Lost Dog in Snowies

Boohooo....too many cry babies in here that are lookin for a reason to be offended.

Its also a thread to wake people up so that they train their dogs to not run away! What if he had been closer to a busy road and that dog took off and got ran over???? Then who is the [edited] for not taking time to train their dog? Not training your dog is just as bad as just leaving it chained to a stake in the middle of a field in my opinion.... If you are going to have your dog off its leash, it better be trained to come back when called or else you better have the right gear to make him come back (decent shock collar or tracker). Some people obviously don't have that common sense, I guess.

If you love your dog that much, TRAIN IT!! If not, chalk it up as a loss and go get another one.

Wow! Kick a guy while he's down.

wow, I guess I didn't realize how many sensitive flowers we have in here. And nice job starting the name calling....good stuff.

Seriously Quad I have seen the best trained hunting dogs have moments where they don't want to listen and will do their own thing. Ease up on the guy he is trying to find his dog. Did your mom never teach you if you have nothing nice to say then STFU.:D Have a nice day and pull the corn cob out of your anus!

Isn't that the truth...bird dog's gone wild! If I had a dollar for every time I felt like not pointing up!!

Looks like the only flower around here is you. He lost his dog. You got some fun poked at you. Boo Hoo! And BTW is wasn't good stuff. It was great stuff. Bwahahahaha.

"well deserved advice"

I typically will only give "well deserved advice" if I'm asked. It's presumptuous to think he wants or would value your advice; especially from someone he doesn't know other than by a screenname. How someone handles their own dog is not anyone's business. Would you give "well deserved advice" to this gentleman on how to raise his children? He only asked us to look out for an animal he, I can only assume, cares about a great deal.

Good Luck on finding your dog. I own a dog too and would be sick to be without her.

I have had had a lot of dogs over the years that I have trained. Labs, goldens, german short hairs, springer spaniels, ect They ALL come back when called and they sure dont need a shock collar. I spent 1000's of hours training each one so the dog respects me and listens to what I say. Every dog has moments were they lose their heads but I have never had one bolt on me and not come back with 15-20 minutes.

IMO if you spend more time training your dog and actually being nice to it instead of locking in in a kennel, then taking it out every once in a while and sort of training it, yelling at it because it doesnt listen after 20 minutes of training, then putting a shock collar on it and expecting it to magically listen to you and know what its supposed to do when it gets the hell shocked out of it. Sorry but your going to get results exactly like what happened.

Sorry you lost your dog and that you dog doesnt listen but this is the exact same thing I tell my brother every time his 90lb german short hair gets out and runs away. Spend a little time with him training him properly and getting him exercise he needs and he wont bolt when he gets out.

Anyway good luck finding him.

That's awesome news!! :cool: Glad to hear he gets to be reunited with his owner.......kudos to ski patrol!! :beer;

Finally, somebody with some dog training skills and some common sense! Thank you, I was getting worried we had a bunch of PETA members on here..... My dog (lab) comes back EVERY time I call him but its taken a lot of time working with him and hunting with him to get him there. The shock collar is just a backup in case he does have one of those momentary lapses of reason. I use it for his safety and mine.

Glad you found your dog though, I recommend you train it so you can avoid this next time.

what if...

What if the dog is young? (the owner hasn't had "a lot of time working with him." What if the owner doesn't hunt? The poster mentioned that it wasn't his dog, it's his father in law's dog. It's logical to assume that the dog might not respond to his voice.
Quad, you seem to have a 'no excuses' attitude when it comes to dogs. What if some people have a dog only to love it?

Your Welcome! I am a firm believer that most dogs are inherently good and want to listen and make you happy, you just need to find a way to connect with them and make them realize what you want them to do. Almost all dogs want nothing more in the world than to make their owners happy.

Unfortunately training dogs takes a GREAT deal of time to be do effectively.
Most people simply lack the time and patients to do this, and resort to things like yelling and punishment to train a dog. Your dog is never going to learn anything by you screaming at it or hitting it except to be scared of you. Shocking it and expecting it to listen and learn isnt going to help things much either.

A dog that loves you and thinks your its best friend will do WAY more for you than a dog that is scared of you ever will. You cant expect ANY dog, no matter how smart it is to become trained in a week and keep that training forever without you continuing to work with the dog on a weekly and monthly basis.

IMO if you dont have time to train your dog and give him/her the love and attention, exercise, food, and training that he/she needs to be smart, safe and happy then you have no business having a dog in the first place. A dog does not belong tied up out in the yard or locked in a kennel day after day.

A dog to me is like another member of your family, its a life time commitment, and IMO a dog and its behavior is a direct reflection of its owner. Your relationship with your dog is just like your relationship with say your children our your spouse, it is constantly growing and evolving.

My Current Golden is almost 4 and has learned alot in those 4 years. She is VERY smart, but we still go over things all the time and grow on the things that she knows. Right now we are working on advancing our hand signal only training, a very difficult frustrating process for us both I might add lol. As long as she is willing to learn I am willing to train her. She is a ball of personality and seems to love it. Shes gets so serious sometimes its almost funny.

Its amazing what they will do for you once they understand what your trying to tell them. I personally dont believe in the shock collar method but your right it is a good an effective method when used properly. Animals are MUCH more sensitive to electricity than we are, so it doesn't take a very big shock to get your point across. I use a dog whistle and I find it to be just as if not more effective.

Anyway sorry for being long winded I am just passionate about dogs. I am glad your dog was found safe and will be returned to his owner. I agree with Quads West though a trained dog is a safe dog.
