Looking @ Buying One

I am a die hard Skidoo guy but my lovely wife is looking for a new (to her) sled and she really likes riding the M series. I am looking at a 2006 162 M7 today and am wondering what I should be looking for. Are there any quirks or weak spots in the M series that I should know about and look for when I look at this used sled today.

How many km's are you guys generally getting out of these motors?

Any other M7 advice would be appreciated as well.

First off I would suggest a 153" M-series if you can find one. Maybe a bit easier to handle for the wife but, not that big of a deal.

M-7's with 3000+ miles are everywhere...............I have a friend with over 7000 miles on a stocker M-7. (He did just recently do a top end though)

Motors are bomber. Chassis is excellent. Very easy to ride and boondock.

I agree! The motors are pretty bulletproof, but I would look for a 153" as well..

M series is a proven good sled the engine has been around for a while and proven reliable. Just make sure if there were any updates to be done that they were taken care of.

I will NEVER buy a used M sled with out look inside the Diamond Drive. I bought a M1000 this summer and the guy told me that it was serviced and was good to go! NOT THE CASE! It was toast when I got it open a few months later!

m7's are great sleds i would get her a 153 also look for a 06 not a 05 the 06 has some upgrades from the 05


great sleds and they can be update to newer spec on the suspension with hrp brackets

What would you suggest looking at inside a Diamond Drive. I have never seen the guts of one. How often do they need to be serviced? As for "not being a good trail sled comment", that will not be an issue where we ride.

I agree with checking the ddrive before buying, but the M7 drive is pretty tough. As long as the oil got changed yearly it should be ok. Have the seller take it to a dealer and check it for you. If it is good pay the extra $100 bucks, if not seller should eat cost.

Check a-arms for cracks and make sure both sides look the same. The a-arms are easy to bend, but parts for Cat are way less than Doo, so you will like that.

Over all a very nice sled and is very reliable.

Went and checked out the sled. 5500 dollars and it has 3300km's on it / 133 hours. The original owner was running pipes but they are gone, back to original exhaust. Was running a boondocker control box as well that is also gone.

Said he changed the diamond drive oil as per Arctic Cat recommendations.

Everything looked straight, new bushings on the A-Arms.

Should I or shouldn't I? Maybe for 5 wouldn't be to bad a deal?

I'd pass on that one. M7's are a dime a dozen right now. Keep lookin!

Here in Utah you can pick up a real nice stock low mile M7 for $4k

In the DD case, your look for any chunks of metal in the oil. Fine metal dust is OK but brass colored dust is not good and chunks of brass or steel are BAD!

5500 is high, IMO. I got mine with 800 miles 2 years ago for 4800.

Tthat would be too much,freind just bought 07 m8 for 5600,400 miles . I paid 4000 in feb, of 07 for my 05 m7. Besides stick to stock buying used sleds. JMO..lots of deals out there right now...

For the record that 5 grand was Canadian pricing. We pay a little more north of the border for the same thing. Thanks for all the advice.

That changes things forsure.m7 would be a great sled and would always get your moneys worth..........

Powderhoundbrr if you are gonna be taking your wife into the deep stuff the 162 is a perfect track. My wife has an 05 M7 with the 162 and loves it cause she doesn't have to go everywhere wide open. She putts around without any problems whatsoever even in 3 ft of fresh which is nice for my back and the sled handles trails just fine even with the big track. She's not very big either and has no problem throwing this sled around. It's a great stock sled and I don't think you'll go wrong if you find one in good shape.

what frock said is good....my wife is 5'3" and about 120 lbs....she rides the m-7/ 162 and loves it....she's not the most aggressive rider, but feels very confident with the long track and the 700 engine...the m-7 is perhaps the standard for a good, easy to handle mountain sled from the 06/07 model years.....i would look at the over-all condition of the sled, just as with any used machine, it will tell you a lot about the care it has had....
