Lite Weight Dreamer

Lets hear about some sleds that have not yet been built. I know there are guys out there that want to build something light and cheap. What are your ideas.

I say Fan Cooled 300 pounds, 144 track...... anyone built one

I did last year but fell short on my weight target... Sled was a z570 but I figured it would take major $ to lighten it much besides stripping the normal junk off. Sled actually worked pretty good, until motor went bang.

I know of one that is currently in progress that is a Indy Lite with a 570 AC motor and will probably have a 144. The chain case is being rolled forward so there is some major surgery on the chassis.

tried that with an S-2000 chassis and a 503 Rotax strung to the limit and beyond. Had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayy more fun and less hassle with a bone stock 500 Summit.

Thats funny, I had the same thing. S-2000 chasis ripped the fan motor out and put a little liquid in her. Two years later the 500 summit was born. What a great sled. A little shy on power but a great little boondocker!

Now I ride a 600 RMK 155. Same concept but way more horsepower!!

I think some of us may have missed the point, "light and cheap", I did build one from an old Phazer, works great, 360lb 136X2" track with scrounging cost about $100.
I think that a Phazer is a poor choice for "light" though.

Had a friend build up a Phazer w/570 SRV engine & single pipe 141...worked great ' in the day"...

If I remember correctly, LRD had a really lightweight 550f REV that was pretty awesome.

What I would like to do is something like the 383 800. Take an old leaf spring chassis, strip it down to the bare bones. Put a more modern rear suspension and better tunnel on it. Drop a UBR 1150 or something into it and see what it'll do.

How about a 550 fan big bore in a XP chassis, Timbersled rear skid with Iceage rails, fabcraft idlers.... the tunnel will be light...[ no cooler, no coolant ]. Run the Camo lite 146"

Run on premix, strip everything out possible, simple fox zeros with ti triple rate springs to allow the swaybar to be removed...

I'd bet that was a sub 380 lb sled.

That would be a fun sled to throw around... HIGH fun factor!

I think that the High HP sleds have their place and a super light lower hp sled will too.

My 550 (629 big bore) rev fan with 16 x 136 X 1.75 got down to 395 lbs dry.

The new project is a TNT I'm longtracking with a 16 X 137 X 1.75 and dry weight may be as low as 375 to 380 lbs. The last major work to do on it is build a skid with a pair of Floats. The 500SS (original 600) engine is about the same weight as the 550, just have to add heat exchangers (but they are structural) and 9 lbs of coolant and hoses over the 550 fan weight. Am shooting for a wet weight of 450 lbs which would make it about 80 lbs lighter than a wet XP 154 X with both sleds having identical flotation on the track and the T having about 40 to 50 lbs lighter front end with the same size skis.

The first thirty + lbs came off the TNT real easy, Straightline Pipe/Can - 11 lbs, Oil injection delete - 10 lbs, Lite primary clutch off 600HO Snowhawk - 4 lbs, Plastic , Foam & Sway Bar - 6 lbs, etc.

Front air box replaced with small carbon fiber box and headlights replaced with a pair of 6 oz aux driving lights - about 5 lbs.

Tail light replaced with 4 oz LED for dirt bike - about 1 lb

The TNT only cost $6800 with close to double the HP, 50 lbs lighter for starters and liquid HP has staying power compared to a modded fan which you Have to let cool down for max power after blasting a hill a couple times in a row.

Good Luck

I think that the old Yamaha Phazers and Exciters were great for making light weight mods. I currently have a 93 exciter with a 600 Vmax, twin pipes, vforce, ported and polished, 2" camo (which I never ride). Its a fun sled and effortless to get it unstuck. I'm not sure what the sled weighs but it has to be right around 400 lbs. Estimated HP was around 105

There are still a few Exciters with 700 wildcat twins floating around. I believe these sleds were nicknamed "Wampus" sleds....Very Impressive!

The chassis's on these sleds were kinda soft and small requiring some creativity getting twin pipes to fit. Suspension was terrible to say the least. But if somebody wanted to make a kick in the pants/cheap mod. You could find a cheap exciter basically dime a dozen and get a 700 or maybe an 8 and have a lot of fun!

i think the best sled to do this with is a rupp liquid cooled 440 it was a race sled in the 70's just take some suspension out of a newer polaris and put it under it with a 144 2'' and some great big ski skins... now that would be fun!:D

You and I are on the same page. I had my exciter right at 400 lbs..........before I turbo'd it:D
Now I'm going 151 or 162 with it. No suspension but very nimble and very agile. I'd take this sled anywhere and never worry about it getting stuck.

350 lbs 488 indy lite

indy lite with a 488 in it, had it in the powder this weekend. runs great and gets the 121 higher on the mountain than ive ever seen it. need to tweak it just a bit more to get the great power out of it though... hope everyone is having fun in all this great powder
