I would recommend using a 6-lamp T-8 fluorescent high-bay fixture for your shops that are 16' and higher ceilings as long as they are heated. They will use half the power as a 400 watt matal halide and put out the same light output.

The T8 florescent is the ordinary replacement for the old style T12. The old T12 is the old "fat" style lamp used with the "heavy" magnetic ballast, the T8 is the new skinny lamps used with the newer "lightweight" electronic ballast that now replace the old T12. The lamp you are referring to is called a T5. They are really skinny and are actually a little shorter so you cannot accidently install them in a regular flourescent fixture. They are basically the replacement for the metal halide fixtures. Are kind of spendy but do work well. They also turn on right away...they take a few minutes to warm up and put out full light but will give plenty of light to move around right away. Also metal halides loose there intensity over time, after about 5 years you only get about half of the light they put out new. The T5's will maintain most of their light over time and the T5's use less than half of the power of the metal halide. We install a lot of these as replacements.

What you said is true but I was still refering to the T8 fixtures. I just want to point something out here so there is no confusion.

400 Watt Metal Halide = 6 Lamp T8 = 4 Lamp T5 for light output. You can replace a 400W metal halide with either of these and get about the same light output but at half the power consumption. If you have 400W MH and you want to increase your light levels use a 6L T5 fixture. Just beware that a T5 lamp costs about 7.00 each and a T8 lamp costs about 2.00 each. Also a T8 ballast is about 15.00 and a T5 ballast is about 70.00 from my experience. Sorry for the hijack here I just want to make sure everyone reading this has the right info.

everyones shop looks good. If i could do it all over again. The center drain would run the length of the floor. I would have painted before moving in, and more windows. I also probably would have tried to go wider, but i had land constraints.

Here is my garage. Unless I'm working on them, I keep the sleds and trailer in my office warehouse since it's only 1/2 mile down the road. The bendpak lift arms do pull out far enough toward each other where I can get a sled on all four arms.
