Just got me a new set of leather saddle bags, (for the saddle, not a Harley). Holy crap these things are as stiff as a 2x6. Put 2 coats of Neetsfoot oil on them and they still stand up on their own power. What else can I do to help them soften up? Short of plain and simple use and time. Thanks fellas. froggy out.....

hey bull, try some lexol on them..http://www.lexol.com/ it is made for conditioning car upholstery but should work fine...it is the best leather conditioner I have seen by far...

I would stay away from Neatsfoot oil, its been known to eat strings that hold things together. Go with olive oil. Time and use is what it will take, sorry. Anything that chemically breaks the leather down to soften it, wont be doing the leather any good.

After you give them a big drink of Neatsfoot oil let them set out in the hot sun for a day "put a little sun in the oil" Will help alot, also just go to using them, a couple big thundershowers and a couple long hot rides in the sun and lot's of oil, should soften them up,

Use some good old-fashioned saddle soap. Any tack store will sell it. Use the saddle soap with a little bit of elbow grease and it will soften them right up. When it comes to leather there is no quick and easy fix, it will take a little work and time......although the end product will be nice.

Be careful with the neatsfoot oil. A little will go a long way, and if you get to much in the leather it bleeds the oil forever and a day.

I use a good leather cleaner if they're dirty (been using MOSS saddle soap and like it, or glycerin saddle soap) and oil it while it's still damp. My saddle maker friend (he's the top in the world so he should know??) uses Neatsfoot oil and says it's the best. Make sure it's not the compound, that's bad for leather. I've never had it eat stitches but have heard that before so maybe that's just with the compound oil. A liquid leather conditioner will get into the leather better, you could put a thicker one on top for waterproofing if you like, like saddle butter.

Thanks for the info guys. As far as the Neetsfoot, I've been using it for yrs on saddles, boots, tack, etc, with no ill effects. But these bags are just horrible stiff. Will look into alternatives.

Hey Turd, the "saddle" in ? ran me $120.00.
