Kids clothing and helmets

My son will be 2 in February and we have a snowcoach for him to ride in with Mom till he is ready to ride alone.

Wondering what kind of clothing you are buying for your kids and what helmets have you found to the best off them?

Any input you have on boots, mittens, goggles or shield.......

Thanks

EP,

Most of the kids that we outfit here seem to go into FXR or Castle Gear. If they are not riding, mittens seem to keep their hands warmer. When they start trying to hold on and actually ride, gloves with fingers allow that better. As for helmets, it is a tossup with whether they ride in an open or closed face version. We sell 50/50 almost. With the gear, parents tend to purchase the most insulated pieces they can find, since the kid really is not moving much the warmer the better for them.

Here is the majority of what we offer for kids....

KIDS GEAR

buy really good clothing and boots for them... but we rarely buy new as you can get slightly used good name brand gear from Craigslist, E-Bay etc. for pennies on the dollar... and they will only wear it for a season and then the next year you will need to buy something new

For helmets we do not use a regular helmet due to concerns of neck injuries due to the weight... so we use better grade ski helmets with the front bar... super lightweight

I wanted to buy used but have not had any luck finding anything that small. So I was starting to look at new. I just hate to buy all new because I know by spring it will not fit him!!

At only 2 years old you have to be careful re helmet weight - apparently their neck is not sufficiently strong enough to support the weight of helmets designed for motorized sports (especially the accelerations compounded by the weight).

When our kids were that age I used a balaclava and hat under a hockey helmet with a clear face shield - light and comfortable enough so as not to upset them but still provided enough warmth and head and eye protection for short low speed rides (at 2 they will not stay out for took long unless they fall asleep in which case they can get cold really quickly).

Good quality mittens are better than gloves - be sure to find ones with good cuffs that are insulated (lots of the kids cuffs are not always insulated). In the end you'll pay $20 to $30 for crap walmart stuff when instead you can throw another $20 at it and have a pair that work and will outlast the kid so you can pass them down the line. If you have a couple of kids / friends / family with younger kids the good gear can be passed sown several times and will still hold up better than the cheap crap.

Thermos with warm chocolate, hot pack for the feet and lots of blankets in the snow coach would also be a big help in being able to keep them out longer. - it really gets to be a PITA to suit them up especially if you have to trailer and then the kid gets cold / fussy after 10 minutes in which case you have to pack it in.

Drug both of our boys around in a sno coach from 0 to about 6 years old. Couple things worth noting. They dont need anything suuuper warm in the coach. Especially if the sun is out. Those things get warm. Even below zero days. Mine would routinely ride up fornt for a while then get back in the coach to warm up.
The clothing matters when they're out playing in the snow. 2 yrs old is tough for boots, not much available. We always used the baby Sorels, but they are too short and would come off their feet = ducktape them on, problem solved. If you can find a little pair of Muck or Bogs boots, insulated, they are much better. Taller and completely waterproof. Some little wool socks and they are good all day in those.
Helmets, we used ski helmets until they were about 5-6 yrs old.
Clothing, both boys now have had FXR gear for the last couple years (7 and 10 now and both riding their own mchines). As little ones, we bougth quality ski gear, typically in the spring at the blowout sales. Have had a couple Obermeyer coats and pants that went thru both boys, got 4-5 years out of those sets.
For little ones, Columbia makes a decent snow suit, but it is not even water resistant.
Not sure if you're new to the sno coach thing, but a couple things I learned, thankfully not the hard way (you'd be surprised how big a kids' eyes get when he has the chit scared out of him though ! haha). Dont ever leave the machine idling near a downhill slope! Make sure you have the safety chain hooked up!
Each incident only happened once and it was after several years of incident free riding, but worth passin on.
Seats are hard. At 2yrs old, strap the car seat in it for the kid. Safer and more comfortable. After that we used boat cushions velcro to the seat bottoms.
Oh and up to age 5, they napped longer in the snowcoach than at home! They were both good for a couple hrs of nap time a day in that thing.
Have fun!
