Emergency workers used enhanced GPS technology to rescue a woman who didn’t know where she was after her SUV rolled into a ditch, pinning her beneath the vehicle in northwest Yakima early Wednesday.
Using a cell phone, the woman called 9-1-1 at 3:13 a.m. to report she was trapped under her Chevrolet Suburban somewhere near a hospital. Dispatchers sent city fire and police units to search areas around local hospitals for the woman, but to no avail.
Public safety employees kept the woman on her cell phone until it stopped working and then used enhanced 9-1-1 technology — often called E911 — which can provide the location of a cell phone caller.
They established that the call came from the area of North 47th Avenue and Fechter Road. Emergency workers arrived at the scene about 3:30 a.m.
The woman, who was not identified by the Yakima Fire Department, was treated at the scene for undisclosed injuries and taken to a local hospital. The Suburban was destroyed in the accident.
