Just for you MileHighJackA$$

Careful, you might start a war with some dirty hairy legged liberal tree huggers. Ready your pinecone shields lest ye be bonked in the head by a Subaru Forrester drivin' hippy.

Wrong Roadless is closed to all mechanized travel or use... No bicycle, chainsaws, wheel chairs, but I can ride my horse there and hike around while chewing on a granola bar. It is basically saying "wilderness" without coming out and saying it.

Since when? What, did they change some rules recently, because that wasn't the way it was last year. Do you have a link to some other info I'm not finding? That link above doesn't say anything about sleds. I know they are fighting to make it defacto wilderness, but to my knowledge non-motorized hasn't gone through yet. Here is a link from BRC of their last Action Alert on this issue, and one from SAW's. Join COHVCO, CSA, BRC and SAWS people! Send them money and be counted.

I've spent some quality time with CSA and other organizations in regards to land management issues (White River National Forest Plan). I can tell you that snowmobiling and summer use are very different plans (good for snowmobiling, bad for summer use). I know it sounds tacky at times, but being part of a club is important not so the club can get $15, but because the numbers represent so much more.

Duke, you can be made at MileHigh, but he is one person. What about all the snowmobilers on here that are not part of some organized effort? You don't even have to do anything, just be one of the numbers in one (or all) of these clubs.

So no motorized access means no more logging?
Where I live the forest is pretty much dead from the pine beetle and the logging that is taking place is helping (better than nothing) to prevent a forest fire. Lets see if these supporters like this proposal when their second home is threatened by a forest fire. I only own one home so if my house burns I am out of a home.
Second home owners have a another home to go to and collect the insurance claim on their second home.
So in turn this proposal is ridiculous in so many ways.
The only thing this proposal is good for is loss of jobs and income that businesses rely on by use of the National Forrest's for motorized access.
I feel their are much more important issues that need to be addressed in this country than these issues just so these reps can feel good about themselves.

I'll keep my guns, money and freedom you can keep the change !!!!!!!!!

There will be special use permits for the logging trucks to access these areas.

Actually all the tree huggers that use the 10th Mountain Hut system are OK with not having motorized access to the huts, but roads have been cut and are accessed for building and maintaining (propane, firewood, supplies, etc.) these huts.

I thought "roadless" was still open to sledding though??? right or wrong?

I too would like clarification on this, since there are some "roadless" designated areas near where I live, but snowmobiling and mountain biking are still allowed. Can anyone post the definition of "roadless" as set forth by the powers that be?

That is by far better then what they hit an area with when I was growing up. It was termed "Roadless" and it had roads. But became basically "Wilderness"... I dont know what their definition is of roadless now! I think they make it up as they go and see how much restriction they can get away with.

I don't know their exact definition either, but I think now it means they are closing an area down to non-winter traffic to prevent people from going up there with 4-wheelers and creating "roads" wherever they please.

They don't have the same problem with snowmobiles since they do not cause soil erosion, which is why there is a summer and winter management plan.

I will say that horses EASILY do as much damage if not more to a trail than a four-wheeler.

Yeah I looked back at that area I was thinking about and it was made wilderness first and then when they found out they couldnt get away with that it was reversed and turned into "roadless".

You are correct with the horse's and even open cattle grazing causing a ton of erosion. I would argue that motorcycles and atv's did less damage than those. BUT, now everyone that has an atv doesnt think they have to stay on the road and will just go booney bashing on them and turn the smallest mud hole into a 100 yard bog.

and that there is exactly why these roadless areas are created. They think that just because they can go straight up the hill they should. Riding with some responsibility will prevent most of this, or ONE guy can go out with the eff-you attitude and ruin it for everyone.

Yeah, 'wilderness area' is the key word we need to watch out for. 'Wilderness area' basically means no sledding. 'Roadless area' applies to commercial ventures usually (logging and mining).

The ATV cowboys creating new trails all across the landscape can't help! My hunting areas are now criss crossed with trails in terrain that used to be foot only. I don't think it's particularily damaging to the environment, but it makes it hard to find game that isn't on high alert all the time now. Used to be you could walk in a mile and not see anybody. Now you see some lazy azz draggin out your elk with his ATV. The whole Horse thing in Wilderness is BS too. At least mtn bikes are human powered, but they can't ride Wilderness. Welcome to the land of the elitists!
