Jobs

This year has been harder than prevous years for sure. A union rep recently told me its at 75% what it was last year at this time. The slope offers so many oppurtunites, but its not what people think. Say you work a two on two off, and you get $25.00 an hour. Its good money, but not the riches everyone thinks. Yeah, you have no expenses, but you have to manage your money good while off. I'v been fortunate enough to have worked since may, and should work until end of october. I was talking to a pit owner in the valley, and he told me he got over 500 applications for employment this year. He said he has never gotten over twenty on average, Get your name out there, the squeky wheel always gets attention. Tim

Greetings, I am a firm believer that if you want work, it can be found. With that being said though, I agree with the above post ... its tough right now to find decent jobs, even with your degree. If you have some experience that helps but if you are just out of school it may be hard to get established. Alaska has been great to me and I see no reason why it should be that way for you. The people that live up here are what make this the best of the best of places to live. Good luck to you.

its also called industrial engineering at many other schools. i orgiinally started off in mechanical engineering but it was too theoretical for me, i'm a hands on person and love to get my hands dirty. this degree allowed me to both get my hands dirty and not be stuck in the trenches for ever and work towards the management side of things.

its essentially an engineering degree with a bunch of business classes mixed into it. so you understand both the engineering and the business side of projects.

i also have a AS in mechanical engineering technology.

currently working as an assistant project manager on a waste treatment facility upgrade. a 12 million $ project that encompasses everything from laying yard piping, installing pumps/ presses, welding/ fabrication, extensive concrete work etc.... extensive excavation/ site work as well.
