Anyone know anything about Jack Russels?

Looking at getting a pup for my girls and the wife and I. She want's small I want a lab. I told her I would do little as long as it wasn't a damn dog that just lays around like a cat, hence the Jack Russel. Just don't know much about them.

my sister has one, named pirate. they are full of energy and i believe lb for lb there the toughest little bastads youll ever find. they tend to have a mind of their own and are very smart, they like to run unless routinely not to with an air leash ( air soft ) or an equivalent like a shock collar or something. they dont need much after the initial training and are loving family oriented dogs

IMHO - I looked at several dogs and the last two on my list were the Jack Russle and the Beagle. I choos the beagle and was so happy, Jacks are very hyper and smart, kindof a tough combination, beagles are slightly larger they are much calmer and very affectionate.

I would highly highly recommend the beagle actually even better get two beagles, you will not regret the second one, they occupy each others time and are just great companions for each other.

Jacks are great, most all dogs are great if handled and trained properly. If you want a hunter that is smaller and is a great family dog I would recomend the Brittany. We owned Brittanies for 30 years and wish I had the room for another but alas now yorkies, but they are great also. Swampy:D

never had a jack but, every one that i have seen is fawkin wired!!

there is one 2 doors down from me, its name is nut.. they sure as he!! picked the righ name for it. the little bastard will get loose and run the neighborhood for hours and hours. one day im workin on something in the garage, i heard the little sumbeach running around like a maniac, there he is chasing a raccoon across the street and into a tree.. just about a week ago i hear a bunch of rustling in the trees that border my house. thought it was a racoon or possom. turns out it was nut (11pm). i called him over, hooked a rope to him and walked him home. hes actually a really cool dog but, i dontt hink i could handle his energy.. not to mention, when i try to take a nap (mid afternoon) ;) the little prik will not stop barking..

i have a lab, hes nuts too but, properly trained, i dont think you can beat a lab..

Have a friend that used to breed them. Those little critters are HIGH ENERGY and fearless ... "big dog" syndrome big time! Watched a litter of his pups chasing a mini horse around the corral one day ... pack hunting

Buddy of mine has a couple. I've been talking dogs and he says the JR is not really a kids dog. To much of mind of their own and can play a bit too hard. I've been around his and they are hyper and when you get to playing with them they play to win....good dogs and listen well, but I could see kids poking and pulling causing some problems.

Same here! I don't know how anyone could relax with one of these dogs around. It's like they are hopped up on crack! The people who own them seem to always like them though.

well with pirate i figured out he likes carmel corn... and with even one piece oooooooh boy he goes nuts but normally he sleeps alot likes to play with his sisters and loves his momma ( me sis ) he's always whining when she leaves the house even for 5 minutes.

but i keep him ran down by playing with him, and when he gets into it he rips the crap out of my arm if he can get it but i play rough, he gets along well and lightly plays with the kitty's and the bunny

I've never met one I've liked, and I love dogs. My neighbor's barks enlessly at nothing and brings home mice, moles, rats, etc, just like a cat. Keep looking if you ask me.

Think carefully on this choice. We have a Jadg Terrier/Jack Russel cross. While we adore this dog as one of the family, THEY ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE!

The Jack has a very determined, unceasing personality and will not be the dog that "just lays around." If you doo not plan to spend time EVERY day with this breed, it will end up making its own "entertainment!" If your girls are on the young side, this also might not be a good idea as the Jack plays rough.

It sounds like you have more than one child, the Jack most times singles out one family member and attachs to them as their side kick, rather than being a gregarious family dog. If you have cats, find them a new home, the Jack once grown, will take them out.

Get a book and read about them, or goggle research.

It seems from your post you are not intersted in taking much time in working this new pet?

What does this mean "I told her I would do little as long as it wasn't.... " ?????

I don't want to get a dog that has no energy....I grew up with dogs that loved to play with us kids. And to be honest I am not to worried about a dog playing to rough, all dogs can learn as can kids. It seems lots of little dogs like those pugs and all the mut breeds they mix them with just lounge. I want a dog that will play fetch, that will want to be outside with us.

Whatever dog we get will be getting exercised and run around.

I'm wondering more about the tempermant and health of the Jack Russel. When you guys say they latch onto one person, is it to the extreme that Chessies do or is just more of a favorite?

Slim, one more sorta question. My wife stays at home, so very seldom would the dog be shut up for the day. At most maybe 3-4 hours while we are running errands? I know the info I've read so far says they need room to run, etc. So would the Jack be able to handle 3-4 hours Ok or would we be inviting trouble?

Minniture Long Hair Dashound

We've had Lola for a year and a half now. Good mannered dog and not high strung. Smart little bugger to. The wife taught her to ring a bell in two days tied to the patio doors for when she wants out. She loves to sit in the sun and by the fireplace. She does not like the -35 below mind you neither do I. The life expectancy is 14-15 years and their spine is the most delicate part especially as they get older. She loves to go camping and quadding. The best thing to do is research. Get a couple of books on the breed of dog you're interested in and make sure he/she will fit in with your family and lifestyle.

I don't like kick me dogs and the Jack Russel is the most annoying out of all of them. Get a spaniel, they don't get real big, are great with kids, and they are great hunters.

My old girl friend had one.. We nick named it the monster.. it was super hyper active when it was little and was obnoxious. Now its about 2 years old and has calmed down. it is actually a pretty good. it is too smart for its own good though.

no problem if they are in a kennel. Ours loves its kennel, feels like a den to it. She has no problem spending time there but, when you let her out, it is like releasing a coked up over- caffinated hummingbird.

Very loyal dog, smart, a ton of fun but does she ever have a lot of energy.

If your kids are older than 3-4, a jack Russel is no problem.

I have had 3 Jacks now and there are 5 in our family. I have had a lot of dogs over the years, Chihuahuas, shepards, labs, pugs, mops, etc, etc. My JRT's are by far my favorites. They are great family dogs, very loyal, very obedient if trained properly. I think their energy is one of their best qualities. I dont believe the horse thing, they are famous for being great with horses, I dont know any "puppies" that wouldn't bark and chase another animal. We use to live on a horse ranch and looked after 38 Appoloosa's, our JRT's use to walk through the stalls and the horses wouldn't even bat an eye. They are recognized in dog books as being good horse dogs. Buy a Jack Russel book and read, if you are an outgoing person, they are great companions, they like nothing better than to go for walks or go travelling. My 2 JRT's go to work with me all the time, they stand with their feet on the door in the morning.

I will admit, they are very dominant when it comes to other dogs, cats etc. If they grow up around other animals they wont bother them much.
My dogs dispise cats, gophers, rabbits, etc, but that is the way we trained them, I dont want strays around.

Good luck, sorry for the long winded.

:beer;:beer;, AA

P.S. Yes they shed.

Great dogs like most of their Terrier counterparts. We have a Minature Rat, Toy Fox, and a Jackrat(Russel/Rat Terrier mix). These are very high energy dogs. Unfortunatly, many end up in rescues and pounds because owners are not prepared for how much energy they have. For most of them, their energy level does not seem to decrease over time. We find them to be very loyal, loving, and fun little dogs with just the right amount of attitude. There is never a dull moment with them around! Just ask our Lab and Aussy...lol. You will need a firm hand and strong will to keep them in line! If you have that, you can't go wrong. JMO.
