The whole electoral system does indeed need to be modernized.
I cannot see a good argument why we have not move to a "popular vote" system.

Until this year, I had no idea how crooked the primary system is.
Time for change my friends.

The electoral college makes the small states (in population) have some weight in the general election.

If it was a popular vote only (and it won't be that way as the Constitution would have to be amended) then small states would never have any voice in the election.

The primary system SUCKS and the parties need to change it... and they can. The thought Iowa, NH, SC, and a couple of other states set the stage for the candidates is wrong. Maybe a national primary for both parties, top two of each party is the President and VP candidates.

For the general election the Constitution says HOW the state votes will be given out... ever notice the very conservative Nebraska goes "red" except for a small district in or near Omaha, which goes blue. That state got it right! They give out their electoral votes depending upon how people vote. As an example if Washington State did that King, Kitsap, Pierce counties probably would go Democrat and the rest of the state would go red. It will never happen as the Democrats know Washington is a blue state under the current rules. The same reason you will never see it happen in Texas as the GOP does not want to give up those electoral votes for the GOP candidate for President

I live in WA and my GOP vote for national office does not count; likewise living in Idaho your Democrat vote for President is a waste of time.

But if EVERY state did it like Nebraska, you would see the presidential candidates campaign in EVERY STATE as all of the votes will count.
