it can happen on the smallest slopes

The great thing is that you are OK.

On A different note, It was still manegable. It is always a thought in my mind about being on our normal slopes that I have never seen slie on a high danger day, that they can still let loose today. It's not the right frame of my mind but I like to think to myself that they will be manegable. They may ruin your day, but hopefully you don't end up in a body bag.

My buddy has rode the same area in the uintas for 8 years, I have rode it for over 4. There are still slopes that concern me, but I have never seen them slide, he has never seen them side. I will be the first to admit that is not the right frame of mind, but they are small, like you were on, and I'm sure you have been on it 100s of times before. Today when we were talking the same slopes concern us, but at the same time we see the danger and what can happen and use the knowledge we have from taking classes to asses them.

It can happen to everyone one of us at any time. There isn't a day driving up the hill that I am not thinkig about not being able to drive back, whether I am dead, or severly injured. That is why we spend the money for the beacon, probe, shovel, chest protector.... and learn as much as we can about the dangers and how to avoid them. We can't let it get to the point where we all sit on the couch and eat cheetos every weekend eiher. There are many risks invovled, be knowledgable, invest in the proper equipment and go out and have fun. The Risk is part of the reason we do it right?

The bad thing is with avalanches, is we are the most likely to be involved in them and have the least knowledge, warning and ambition to check for the dangers.

I'm glad that this is the only snowmobile (or skier) induced avalanche that I heard about this weekend. I was really worried to pull up KSL and see that someone got killed this weekend.

As Bad as the condition were. I am too. Prop's to Utahns! Peeps are waking up.:face-icon-small-coo

Things overall have settled fairly well, but the the danger is always out there.

Me and my buddies have been talking about it. We usually NEVER see just a "moderate" with "pockets of considerable" in the Uintas until April. The trade off is is when you look at the size and the destructiveness. The chances of setting one off are less, but when you do, watch out, it will be big and deadly.

Of all the stucks I have had to use a shovel on and dig down the snow is good, all 5 feet down until the last 1 to 2 feet, then it is the usual crap.

As Craig Gordon says, a deep warm snow pack, is a good snow pack. And utah has self healing snow pack.

I am ready for a great year of playing in the trees, below treeline, on the moderate slopes as I most always do.

Thanks for the great info and pics... glad everyone is OK! Anyone know the location?
Feel free to email craig@utahavalanchecenter.org if you have any more details.
Thanks!

hi craig
we were rideing between double hill and the head of whitney res
the slide was about 20 feet wide but only slid about 15 feet
my sled stayed on top of the big slabs and i was able to stay
on my sled.
i have cut through this area many times and never had this happen
before so i though it was safe.
me and my friend had our becons on along with shovels and probes
glad we did not have to use them.

Good report. I have plenty of places like that as you can tell from my previous post. How bad could it have been? Did it have lots of room to run out and get big?

Well I can say after spending Monday shoveling 6 feet of snow off our decks and roof of our cabin there is an ice layer down a few feet that is going to cause lots of problems. We saw this layer cause a couple of slab slides on a couple hills that we never see slide and we have been riding there for over 20 years. Those bigs hills look awefully tempting especially with the turbos but that snow is so unstable right now. Now with more snow this week it just keeps getting more dangerous out there. Be safe everyone.

From the 5 years I have been here, the avalance reports have been better than they have ever been. Although.....It is a give and take relationship. It appears it is going to be harder to trigger a slide, but when you do, the consequences are going to be far worse. They are going to slide BIG and be deadly.

Reading the report for the Wasatch the other day, They actually had so little to talk about it they just said Level 1 all around because the danger is there.. This is not an excuse for us to forget about it, but I think it is going to be a good year. Lets set a new record this season...for the fewest people killed in a slide!
