Is there such a thing as too young?

I had the same debate, but mine was internal not with mom. I gave my 2 year old a predator 50 quad for his b-day and he is not able to ride alone yet, but he loves riding with mom on it and can sit on it in the garage and get used to the feeling of the quad etc.

He will be getting a 120 dragon from Santa this year and it will probably be the same thing, not old enough to ride alone, but can play on it some with mom or dad next to him and can crawl all over it in the garage and pretend for now.

He is already crawling all over my sleds and quads in the shop so at least if he falls of the 120 instead of my 800 it will be a shorter fall to the ground:) (think that arguement would work with mom if needed????????????)

thats retarded .......we got our 1st born his first Kitty Kat at age ...mmmmm6 fricken months .....hes been ridin ever since ..."DO IT"

I got my girls anartic cat 120 last year and my girls were 21/2 and 18 months they both loved it. I would just take them to an open field on some property i own and attach the kill switch tether to me and run alongside if theygot going to fast or could not turn it to ovoid obstacles i would just pull the kill switch now that there a year older they are getting better at the steering part and throttle control I say start them young that way they will be ready ride with dad in the mountians sooner so when your regular riding buddies bale on you like the did to me this year you got them to ready to be your new riding buddies just my 2 cents

Never to young!

My girls have been riding with the wife and I for a couple years. They love it!
They are 3 and 5 now and this year they have a 120 for X-mas. It was that or give up the 800 turbo! I don't think I'm ready for that. I can't wait to see them ride. They have been sitting on it for weeks down at our shop where I have it until X-mas. They think that it is for some other kid.

I'm pretty sure they are ready for it. Or at least it made my 3 year olds list to Santa, along with the riding lawn mower.:)

2.5 is a little young in my opinion. I would say 3.5-4 at the earliest.

I have to agree, my main concern here would be that there strength to turn the bars, or the inevitable SMALL land mine! I know you are talking small machines that go slow, hopefully on a smooth surface (lawn), but really, just give it a little bit of time. A two year old or younger:eek: call me a worry wort, but that just sounds nuts!!!

In my respectfully honest opinion!

My daughter is 5 and this is the first season I'd feel comfortable with her on something of hers. She has a male cousin that had the muscle control at 3 to handle one. It just depends on the kid.

As far as riding with us, Katie has been on sleds and quads since she was 6 months old. Now she even rides with me on my dirt bike. Granted we ride trails only with her and take it easy, but she still loves it - when she doesn't fall asleep.:)

the wife and I would stand 50 feet apart at first ....he would climb on and pinner !! all the way to Mom .....she whould grab him spinn it around and he would head back to me ......thats how it all goes down ...my 4 year old daughter started riding by herself on a kitty Kat 2 years ago today she was blastin around on the Mini Z rev ....no problem

My son is 2.25 yrs old. We are borrowing a Kitty Kat and I wanted him to ride it last weekend after a small snow storm. I will agree with the above posts on a little young, but if you're riding with him/her...never too young. (as long as you can get a full helmet on them!) The problem my son has is the wfo/pinned to the bars approach to the throttle and the inability to steer on his own. If you ride on the back with your knees on the seat and assist with some of the operating it works very well. He is a minature SLEDHEAD!!! I LOVE IT.

The best thing about it was...later that afternoon my wife was asking where he was, I said in his bedroom...she went to check and nope, he wasn't in his room. We slowly opened the garage door and he's out sitting on the sled making VROOM>>VROOM sounds and pulling some of my tools over to "work" on it like daddy! PRICELESS

too young?

There's too many variables to consider to come up with some "magic number". The problem with you and your two and a half year old is that there is no problem as long as nothing happens. But if something does.........well..........they're gonna be on you like stink on sh#@t.

My two sons were 2.5 and 3 when they started on a Kitty Cat. Even at that age, I made them go through a bunch of start and stop drills. Then came the marker cones to navigate through in a parking lot. I made sure they were comfortable before I let them buzz around the cabin through the trees. The Kitty is very safe with a top out speed of around 7 mph. They can only get about 1 to 2 years on a Kitty before they will need a 120 or even better, a Sno Scoot. The Sno Scoot lasted my oldest through age 10. This year he got a Cat z370 and that is plenty big enough to last him for several years to come.

Don't be in a rush to bump your kids up to bigger sleds. You'll hear stories of parents getting their young 8 to 13 year olds on 600's and such. That can get a young mind into a lot of trouble before they will know how to react. It's not worth the risk. Plus their body weight doesn't have any influence on that heavy of a sled to teach them that skill. Hope this helps and have fun teaching them safety and responsibility.

It was an issue with my wife as well, but I won , the kids got the 120, and that was 4 years ago. To this day I can't think of any other Christmas present that the kids still use and enjoy that much. They learn the basics and grow up respecting the machine. Just make sure you watch them close. If you can't find a helmet that fits, then it might be better to let them grow a little first. Start them with a helmet now, so you don't have to argue with them later. Good luck.

My son started at 2.5 yrs on the Kitty Kat. Started him on a Lake w/no obstructions. Have home vidios of that weekend, hilarious! It shows the dare devil in him as he would get her going as fast as it would go (wood block taped under flipper) & the jump off. Did that all weekend. Would sit him down & have along talk, let the older kids ride it for awhile, then let him take it again & samething! Get it goin as fats as it would go & jump off. He went on to be a pretty good motocrosser & has been riding the mtns since he was 12.

Our boy was 2.5 when he got his first kitty cat. He had been riding power wheels all along. He didn't quite get the whole throttle thing. He stomped his foot on the foot rails and got mad when nothing happend. Dad showed him the throttle but failed to show him the brake. He grabbed a handful of throttle and took off like a shot. 8 Mph is fast when you are running behind it in heavy snow boots! He ripped across the front yard, went around the big pine tree at the corner of the house, flew across the back yard and ran into the fence. The whole time pulling his feet up - cuz to stop the power wheels all you had to do was pick up your foot. When we got to him he said "wow that was fun, I wanna do it again!" He had a little cut over his nose where the helmst smashed his little nose! Daddy showed him the BRAKE and THROTTLE and he was hooked ever since.

He is now 11 and his brother who is 9 both have been on 340 Ovations for two seasons. They were on 250 Yamaha's before. The 9 year old started on the 250 Bravo when he was 2.5.

Hopefully you can buy it for him. Nothing better than a family that can ride together!

My son is 20 mo. and he got an electric 4-wheeler for x-mas. Within a half hour he was tearing up the living room, he was standing up, standing with both feet on one side, one knee on the seat, he even tried to stand on the seat and drive. He is going to give my wife a heart attack one day.
