Is the 2 stroke really a dying breed??

first off! the manufactures never killed 2 stroke dirt bikes in racing, the ama did. they allowed the 4 strokes a to big of a cc margin against the 2stroke, second, they redesigned the supercross tracks to favor the 4 strokes. more open and less technical! sure the jumps are bigger, but the tracks are more open. third, 2 strokes are actually better in the trees then 4 strokes, in cross country racing a lot of the pros went back to 2strokes(they were faster in the tight stuff) and if you ask a mx race team how much more it cost to race 4 strokes now, they will tell ya it tripled the cost to race! and by the way i ride a crf450, $30 oil changes every 4 rides vs $9 for pre mix that last 6 rides! 4 strokes are higher to maintain.

I never said the manufactures killed the 2 stroke. California is a HUGE dirt bike market. When those "retards" wanted to get rid of the smokers, the AMA went bonkers. They alowed Yamaha to race a bike that was a "one off" full factory YZ400 in the '97-'98 season. Doug Henry won the first supercross on a four stroke because he was a stud and the bike was TRICK. The AMA allowed 450's and made the tracks bigger because of the NASCAR effect. They want more people and more races, and big triple jumps pack the house. The AMA killed the 2 stroke, not the makers or California. They allowed a huge displacement advantage for the 4 strokes. Unfortunately, we live in the real world, and California is Motorcycle capital. So if Cali didn't want smokers anymore, they don't get smokers anymore. Now then, getting back to sleds, if Yamaha would have started racing back when the RX1 first showed up(2003?) if they were allowed to, there would be a lot more thumpers in sleds today. Again, the 4 stroke needs a displacement advantage to compete. That's not a big deal in motorcycles because you are dealing with one cyclinder. Snowmobiles get big and heavy real quick because of the multiple cyclinders requirement. I would love to see them get smaller, but I would rather see the 2 stroke live on!

I have a 450 four stroke dirt bike(yammy) and never thought I could get this level of performance AND reliability out of any machine. It just rips and does it every day. I never think twice about riding alone either. Mods on these thing work too. Get rid of the smog crap, rejet, put a factory race pipe on and hold on baby! I used to think a CR500 was insane until I rode one the other day and it does have a pretty big hit but after riding my 450 it really doesn't feel very strong. I hope they can get the weight down and the power up a little on the sleds soon.

So your tearing off the benefits of the thumper from a epa point of view and jacking up the sound...that's gonna help keep riding open. You think if they got rid of 2 strokes that the greenies would stop or go after the "sound". I'm glad the AMA is redoing classes so that the 2 stroke is more competitive. As for better racing, etc I'm willing to bet a good rider on a 250 could make most look silly on a 450. Plus like others have said, the 2 stroke is easy to fix and is a blast in the woods. Also I'd say that todays riders who have only been on Fs are worse riders then those who grew up on smokers and know what a clutch is and how to work it.

i know the two stroke is cheap to fix but when you put 2-3 pistons in a season with rings and time while i ran full race season on my thumper i think the thumper won :) also friends were not afraid to ride the two stroke so i had to throw clutches in also where the 450 orginal cluthes, i also love that i dont have change a spark plug ever other week, but 4 strokes smell, wish the smelt like a 2stroke, i hope 2 strokes never die eliminating that kind of fun should be a sin

Yamaha builds both 2 stroke (hpdi... 1000psi fuel rails) and 4stroke outboards. 2 stroke production is less each year. The customer demands 4 stroke........they are just voters.....they vote with their wallet.:)
Bye Bye 2 stroke.:p

We are at the early stages in the s/m world........the landscape is changing.
In canada the #2 snowmobile retail market share is held by a 4 stroke company:p

Ride safe:beer;
RS

I think 2-strokes have the cold weather advantage. Sure I'm a spoiled rider now with a 28' enclosed and heat but there was a time when i needed to get to school, work, ect.. in North Dakota. You could leave an old 2-stroke outside uncovered for weeks and get it to run on several pulls. I fear the batts on 4-strokes and extreme temps.

Now bikes are a warm weather sport and I love the grunt of my 426.

As for the Greenies...when they are done with 2strokes they will move on to 4strokes.

Just my $.02

dont get me wrong the 4 strokes are excellent bikes, but blow one up and see what your repair bill is, 5x that of a 2 stroke. and if you race a full season on one motor?? pros rebuild every race! maintanance costs to run a 4stroke race team tripled from 2 strokes, just check e bay out! ever wondered why theres so many 04-05 any even 06 4 strokes being parted out? and when you do, see how many heads or top ends are in that post?

I'm not sure how the maintenance costs on 4 stroke RACE bikes even comes into the conversation. Come on, they're race bikes and tuned and ran to the edge. Your average Joe Bag-O-Doughnuts has no need or desire to squeeze every last pony out of a motor. It's the same as trying to compare a Nascar team's engine budget, to maintaining a V8 in your daily driver.

I'm not gonna knock 2 strokes, because they're the ultimate in simplicity and power per cc. They've come a long ways and have served their purpose well. Public demand is there for 4 strokes and Yamaha chose to fill that. Developments from any brand help the sport by pushing others. Doesn't matter if it's a 2 or 4 stroke. The consumer wins. (unless you're BRP and still can't source an 800 twin that holds together, but you still buy them) ;)

Yet every Joe that has a F goes out and buys race pipes, etc for the bike so that they can make power and run the bikes hard.

i know 4 stroke are expensive to rebuild but if you know how to rebuild thats half the cost right there, i get all my parts at cost so that helps but ya valves are expenisve pistons rings, 502 big bore kits, hp cost money how fast you wanna go?

One question I have is mileage. My sleds and 2 stroke quads get around 8 to 10 mpg. Do 4 strokes get better mileage?

Also heard 4 strokes have more torque where 2 strokes have more HP relatively? Do sleds need torque and/or HP like wheeled vehicles or is the setup different for powder applications?

I don't think it's as much "more" torque as it is a 4strk has a wider power band
where the 2strks are real narrow and generally at a higher RPM.

Good for them. If you wanna be a big dawg, you gotta pay to play. If you aren't racing, what's the point? The majority of people that do that are just Ricky and Bubba wannabes.

most people put a pipe on 4stroke for looks, sound, weight, the 4 stroke seems to pull more which power always there from crack of the throttle to rev limiter, for all the people who say the will never ride, own a 4 stroke i was the same way i rode a 450r and i sold two stroke bike within a week and bought a 450, and will never own another two stroke bike, will own two stroke sleds the rest of my life though

In the pro BASS tourny most guys run 2s

faster out the hole, more torque off the bottom and less weight.

Walleye boats (Ranger 620vs/621vs etc) have a helluva time getting on plane with a 4s engine, pros also use 2s here too.

I think its interesting because these boats are rated for HP not engine weight, so if you run a new Ranger Z boat rated for 300 hp your much better off with a 2 stroke engine, even if it's a 225 Etec

I went for lunch today with a buddy that tournament fishes and he got a call from Lund the other day for a pro-staff deal and they're trying to push the 4 strokes on everyone this year.

ya they do that a lot (not just Lund), win a tourny with the right boat/motor and your purse can go way higher

It's all promotions
