Is nitrous a save and reliable mod?

I am debating putting nitrous on my 800 xp for those trips out west to try to make back some of the power lost from the altitude. I absolutely cannot afford to be popping motors so......Is it a save and reliable mod or is it something that should only be handle be experts?

it's just like jetting your engine, the closer you are to the lean line, the more likely you are to cook it. if you adjust the fuel a little rich it is very reliable in my experience. I try to use mine as an "ohshat" button, but do use a 3lb bottle in every ride, and I love it!! :beer;

I've run about 200#'s through my 830 and it's still going. You don't have to be an expert but you should know one and do what they tell you. Some days that shot is the difference between going halfway up the hill and tail-walking over the top, some days not so much. Quick clickers are a must and you have to find a fuel solution that works for you, I've evolved backwards to carrying 12 ounces of race fuel concentrate in a mountain dew bottle and mixing gas just before I push the button because my sled runs terrible on 100 octane if I'm not on the NOS. Some guys run race fuel, some av gas, some just premium. Go with what works for your engine. Plugs get hard to read with some fuel residues, mine tend to get pretty grubby after just a few rides because of the retardents in the race fuel.

I ran a 50hp shot in my carbed 900mc for 3 years and no problems. I replaced the pistons after the second season just cuz I thought I should, but they looked good. and that's 3lbs per ride, always seem to come home empty!!:beer;

I have run it on my viper for 7 years never a problem. Even have it on my atv for 5 years,once set up properly(clutched) it is fun..I ran a 45 hp shot on the sled any more and your clutching is off. Just my experience...02

Over the years playing with nitrous, the only instance I've had was a blown head gasket. Large dose of spray and not pulling out enough timing.
Kits that are 40hp or less, timing isn't really an issue, just a matter of jetting. Piston and cylinder coatings help against lean conditions while dialing in.

To gain back hp lost at elevation?will you only be at elevation for 3 or4 minutes aday? Nos goes quick, some one can probably narrow it down for you but but 40 seconds per pound sound good? a three pound bottle for 2 mintues of fun. how much do you think you will need to pack to use it at elevation all day? And once you feel the power it is no fun going without. if i were you i would figure something else out.

nos

I have the boss system, and I like it on my rev 800 , very easy to dial in , I also have a xp, But I cannot find a good place to install the box under the hood to where it will be safe ,

who cares about minutes and seconds. the average person can make a 3lb bottle last at least one day. mine usually last 2 and im hard on the button

if you own nitrous you would know that even hitting it for 1 or 2 seconds in a climb can get you the highmark. its that little bit extra trackspeed launching you that much farther

in my experience, a 3lb bottle usually will go 3 min. and using 3 second shots that would be 60 shots of NOS. that is quite a bit. not eanough? get a bigger bottle!:D:beer;

I struggled with the same thing beginning of this season. I figured by the time I throw a nitrous system, boondocker box, and some form of gauge at my M7, it's only a little bit more to run an 800 bigbore and you get that extra 20-30hp all day every day.

Boondockers kit and AFR gauge cost $1600 (with twin bottles and mount assembly for tunnel rails on 800 Dragon). some days I will go through 1 bottle, but have never gone through both. Don't use it too much, going to take it off and sell it this summer. Takes some of the fun and skill out of the ride. Saves maybe two digouts a day and was good for a one a day "OH SH!T" save. All in all the ride is more fun without the NOS. That's only my opinion, some have more of a need for power and the high mark. If that is you, then NOS is easy cheap and no race gas.

Then you could pull a plug wire off and have even more fun:rolleyes:

I might try the spark plug thing or maybe put in a 340 big bore:eek:
Actually there is not really a need for it here in central WA. I used it more in 1 week in McCall then I did all season at home.
