IQ/RMK/DRAGON 700 vs 800

Considering Polaris and being new to the breed, looking for pro's and con's between the 7 & 8. I hear talk of the 700 being the only polaris they would consider. Recalls, reliability, fuel & control, power whats the issue.
Ridin high alt deep & steep.

Thanks

This topic is hit a lot, do a search here in the Polaris section and you will see plenty of posts. Don't be afraid of the 800, it is a strong motor and the bugs were worked out with the update. I've had both sleds and the 800 is stronger stock vs stock.

There's a thread/poll on here about how many miles the 800 CFI made it w/o problems, check that out and decide for yourself.

Say’s the man who lives vicariously through others who actually have D8’s.. Oops, sorry was that out loud?

The O/P did ask about 700's & 800's

3900+(with NO down-time-in-the-shop) miles on my D7

IMO, 800's have more problems because they are the sled people buy who plan on modifying their sleds and or being very hard on them.... People buy the 700 for their wife, therefore it is riddden usualy very easliy. Just makes sence that the 80's have more problems.

ok, here it is from a guy who had 3200 miles on a 07 D7 and 1500 on an 09 D8. Both sleds are awesome. The D7 comes out of the box better and is bullet proof. You can go anywhere any non-turbo 800 can go, just not as easily or put the high mark up. The D8 is a solid sled when setup right. Mine was awesome and I only sold it to buy a Pro Ride. My family had 3 D8's with mine and an Assault (same motor). Not one burn down. Only problem we all faced was the temp probe failing and going into limp mode. Easily fixed.

The 700 doesnt' have the torque to get up and moving to ideal RPM's like the 800 will. But up top there isn't that much difference. High compression heads helped out both immensly.

I can ride a 700 and hang with most 800 joes all day. I always said that I had 100cc's less so you better ride 100cc's better. Both sleds are great. One thing I will say about the 700 is that I always found myself wanting more power. Same thing on the 800 but it was more satisfying in the power department. Don't let people who don't want bad things said about their sleds sway your decision.

Cool! I have a 700!! :cheer2:

WAIT! Was that meant to be an insult??? :face-icon-small-dis

No.... But if you are building a sled to race others you wouldn't start with the 700, you would start with the 800. The 700 is NOT the premeire sled. Not saying it isn't a great sled. When i first rode my sled the day after i got it, i had my *** handed to me by a stock 700 rmk... It happens.

Just saying, the 800's have a worse rap than the 700's, which is probubly because there are more 800's that are being rode harder than the 700's. Obviously, those are genrealized statements, ofcorse they are not always true.

ohh and hear is a pic of me beating a modded 700 in a drag... enjoy :face-icon-small-ton

wow...haven't ever seen someone willingly take a nice sled into the mud before...bet that is impossible to clean too...

however, this creates a great argument for buying a new sled on a regular basis..."but honey, the other one is worn out...I made sure!":focus:

Kraven passed on a source of info for the guy to make HIS OWN decision on buying a sled....hence a helpful post!

Sounds like you need ( and really want! ) a 900. :face-icon-small-win

hey i liked my 900! All it took was $5000 in extra bs and keeping a tps in stock...

I think I would look twice when a used D8 from Gardiner Mt. comes up for sale...

Realy? Would you rather buy a well maintained race sled that was cleaned after every ride, and has the best parts availible on the sled for almsot the same price as a stock sled? One that had parts replaced BEFORE they went out because the owner used it every week. Or would you rather buy some flatlander's sled who has 1000 miles in 3 years because it spent it's whole time parked outside collecting rust and leting all the bearings, bushings, seats, oil, and coolant to decay.

Jim,

This site is suppose to be about helping others, not trying to "zing" others that provide useful information.

I was modding and racing brand new 800 triples probably before you rode your first sled ( 800's used to have 3 cylinders......................)

And building and racing 9-second race cars before you were born.

So, you may want to read through the threads under INCREASING YOUR IQ before your next post, and maybe you'll realize that:

I noticed the same thing... Only problem is, I'm not a machinist. Can anyone recommend a good place to have this done?

BELT REMOVAL 101

Wow, stuck in your craw didn't it. Please don't take it hard... I'm just yank'n your chain.

Actually, if there's going to be any of that going on, I prefer reasonably attractive gals between 25 and 35. NOT some dude on the internet that has difficulty changing a belt!
