interesting CE 2.5 mod

Tony,

Thank you for taking the time to post up your photos and video.
Creative use of a hose cutting tool.

I'm wondering if this is a clearance issue that is alleviated with the slight trim on the track?

Too much parasitic drag with lug tips closer to the tunnel roof/outlet. Open it up and more power gets to the snow and the clutches don't have to work as hard to do it.

For me, I believe, running the smaller diameter 7 tooth, 3" pitch drivers on the 9174 Ch. Ext. was what made it feel more lively than before.... and I did adjust gearing for the .92-underdrive of the smaller driver. Those smaller drivers gave me about .30" more clearance for the track lug tips.

I'm also a fan of running factory track tension... so that clearance, or lack of, plays less of a role in loosing power to the snow.

I wonder if doing this is helping not only with clearance, but maybe it's creating two separate planes for the snow to try to shear at under the track. Allowing the blocks of snow between the paddles to stay bonded a little longer before being sheared off and spit out the back?

You are very welcome. It works better than the fillet knife, you can do it one handed and still film it.lol

i truly believe so, I have been trimming the 2.5" down from the IQs to the Pros. But have trimmed all paddles until now.

The pinch point all comes together at the head of the tunnel along with the tracks lug tip speed increase going around the driver

I absolutely agree.

Thanks Eric.
More Sierra Cement on the way. :)

Ran a tank through the turbo yesterday in Cooke. The "new" track cut is definitely the way to go. Opens up the half inch drop in clearance that the heat ex-changers take away and maintains the benefit of the 2.5" lug in the center The tunnel vibration from snow evacuation of an uncut 2.5"CE is gone. I will start to cut all installed 2.5" CE in this manner vs all lug height cuts.
Here are pictures of the primary and secondary after a day of riding in yesterdays conditions, I took these on the hill. Long wide open pulls to technical tree riding.

It's interesting to read about this. I have been talking to a few buddies about doing this to our stock Poo tracks. I run the F-Bomb mod now, but was looking at trying a Camo X 2.5 or Powerclaw next season. This might be a consideration

Tony... My take ... this has as much to do with the benefits of better clearance than the properties of the paddle itself... Thoughts?

I've run the 2.5" Ch-Ext's on sleds with 7tooth drivers for a while... Neck and neck with the same sled running a 2.5" Ch-Ext with 8 tooth drivers... I had better track speed.

Not, granted, all "same" sleds are not equal... but I believe that the restriction in the tunnel on the PRO models without the fwd cooler and the build up of plaque on the tunnel at the exit make for diminished performance... lack of clearance.

I think your brilliant track mod helps with this and would also help with the stock tracks too.

So the way I understand this you could possibly get the same or better performance with the CE 2.5 just by changing drivers to 7 teeth instead of trimming?

Or am I off track ?

Read through this post this morning. Been thinking all day. Could the higher track speed with 7 tooth be attributed to the lower gearing the 7 tooth provides, or is there much difference?

peak

I trimmed the outer 2" of my peak this summer. Will try it out this december.
This was mainly done to stop the lugs from tearing like shown in the one picture, but it may make a little more room for snow/wind to pass by.
