Installation and Review: Mountain Performance Inc, Stage 1 & 2 Supercharger

Thread Rating
5.00 star(s)
Like many others on this forum I decided to jump in and take advantage of the group buy that MPI offered all the SnoWest members in May. In my case I choose the MPI Stage 1 Supercharger for my 2010 Yamaha Nytro SE. While I was not expecting to see this till "Mid-Summer" much to my surprise it arrived today! I had told Matt that I was perfectly good with getting it 6-8 weeks from now as I have several other items being made for my summer mod list. But the good guys at MPI weren't satisfied with putting my order on the back burner and bumped me up and got my unit built and shipped right away.

I will give everyone fair warning, this is going to be a multi-month thread that gets updated many many times over the course of the summer as I tear down my sled and install the supercharge along with some other goodies.

But what the heck, SUMMER SUCKS and I can think of no better way to pass the long hot months that prepping my baby for another fantastic season on the powder.

The first round of pictures and comments will follow soon.

After a couple seasons with my Supercharger I have decided to change out the pullies and increase the boost this year!

Lets see what 10lbs of boost is like this year...:face-icon-small-hap:face-icon-small-hap

3 questions:

1. How much boost did you get from you 31/25 pulley setup?

2. What pulley setup is in your plan for 10psi?

3. Don't you need the extra upgraded fule pump when boosting over 7-8 psi?

// Granath

To answer all three questions I need to know your altitude.

5-8psi depending on altitude.
I opted for the LOWEST boost they offered while I learned my way around this system.

Not a clue which pullies he is sending me.
But Mac is setting it up for 5,000ft + altitudes.
Only time I have ever been below was in BC, and we brought lots of 110 gas and took it VERY easy on the initial climbs up to altitude.

I think you can go to 11lbs of boost on the stock system.
But they also offer a ECU upgrade now from EVOPs that might push a bit more fuel through the injectors. If need be, I am perfectly happy upgrading both the fuel pump and injectors if MPI suggests I do that.

opportunity for HUGE boost at those elevations...

Yes :) And also the opportunity for a HUGE engine meltdown :)

My plan is to gear up the charger about 1:3 and lower the compression like the mcx kits with a head shim.

With a good intercooler and a upgraded fulepump and 1:1 regulator i hope to get afr under control.

I have seen dynos of the 180hp version where they geared up to 28/26 and around 8.5 psi it starts to lean out beyond 12.4 afr, at 10psi afr rised to 13.83

Oh Ya,
Opportunity for a SPECTACULAR MELT DOWN if your not paying close attention!!

Sea level about 60% of the time.

I think the 31/25 combo you have is going to give you the 10psi that you want. I would start with the pulleys you have. The stock fuel pump will be your limitation. We've had see level guys run out of fuel at 8psi.

Whats the next step up for a replacement fuel pump?

MPI fuel pump upgrade. Part#HSK-1237 $399.95. In stock ready to ship.

The kit has everything you need to upgrade the stock Nytro fuel pump. We have made several billet parts to make this a easy "factory looking" upgrade. Included are a Walbro pump, billet fuel return fitting, fuel regulator, billet req. adaptor, high pressure fuel line, clamps, fuse, and illustrated instructions.<O:p</O:p

And when would the upgraded injectors be needed?
Above 10psi or 12psi or much further along the road?

Out west we're still ok on the stock ones in that 12-14 range. I've talk to guys at sea level that ran out of fuel pump at 6psi. Nytro pumps can have some inconsistencies.

Typically 7-8lbs is the max at sea level without changing your fuel system. Also once you go above about nine pounds you will need better fuel, and or lower compression. For me to run 13.5lbs at sea level I've got the larger fuel pump, fuel lines, head shim, and timing changes. All to get me about 248 on the dyno with 92+ octane. All setup professionally by Ulmer racing.

Time to pull off the old low compression pullies and install the new ones.

Lets BOOST the boost on Nytrocity!!

Using the default bolt, I cranked it all the way down and set the Lock Nut.

Been working on this today at long last.
Just got the tank off and surprise surprise.
Somewhere in the last 2 years I CHANGED out the tension bolt and put in a LONGER one. And now I am having a bear of a time getting enough pressure OFF the tension wheel to remove the mounting bracket so I can take off the pullies and the Supercharger belt.:face-icon-small-hap
