info please !!!!

have always ridden summits but i am thinking of switching to cat either m 1000 or m8 09 model. which machine works better, is lighter, reliability etc.riding a summit 1000x right now but like my rev 800 better please help

have owned 3 m's, m7cutler1000, 07 and 09 m1000's

highly recommend the m1000, unless u get a hair dryer the m800 is limited in the expansion category to change your sled as your needs change, i have an 09 m1000-162 have done a lot to it like Full Slp kit, suspension mods, clutching mods, simmons, boss eetc. the sky is the limit, It is good to go with a 09 or newer the 09 m1000-162 is 30 lbs lighter than the 07 m1000-162, and the power claw track is excellent.

plus you should be able to get a 1000 cheaper than a m8. not sure whats up with that nowadays but whatever. the difference in price you could put into upgrades in the 1000 walk over any 8... maybe not a tm8.

the only thing is ive been hearing and reading about lots of m1000 crank ends break off. seems once they get some miles on them its starts happening. thinking about extra warranty before my 1 year is up.

I had a 1000 doo and I feel sorry for you having to ride it this long. If you like the 800 rev over the 1000 you will like the m8 over the m1000. If you want more power put a turbo on it. 800's are all around more fun.

If you’re a bigger guy get the M1000. The torque is out of this world. I ride the wife’s M8 and my M1000 back to back on the same hills and I would never trade it for a M8. JMHO

If you can afford it, buy a 2009 or newer. The 09s were the first year for the electronic reverse, the powerclaw track and the updated rear skid and bumper assembly.

To give you another completely different recommendation.....

Ride both sleds before you buy. I too was convinced I wanted a M1000 because with a pipe alone a guy can be close to 200 hp. That is until I rode the M1000 and M8 back to back. I was looking for a lightweight boondocking sled coming off a RX Ton. The M1000 is 30 lbs heavier than the M8 and it felt like all 30 lbs were strapped to the front bumper (I was used to this on my RX-1). The M1000 accelerated much slower (almost big block or diesel like) and continued to build power as the sled climbed.

The M8 was more like a small block V8. The power was instantaneous and the front end would come up and the sled would be gone. I couldn't get the M1000 nose to come up much at all but, the M8 was a 153" and the M1000 was a 162" to be fair. Both sleds were demo 09 snow pros with SLP pipe setups. I would love to ride a well setup M1000 to change my impression but, for me it wasn't even close. I got a 09 M8 and sent my engine to SLP over the summer for their performance edition kit. Now it's probably 425 lbs (estimation) and 170 hp.

Even better, the 2010 and 2011 M8s are even better. They are 155-163.4 hp out of the crate (the M1000 is 162 hp) and with just a SLP single pipe kit the 2010 & 2011 M8s are very close to the 170 hp mark and the pipe saves 18.5 lbs. In my latest snowmobile magazine the 2010 M8 Sno Pro 163 was only 1 pound heavier than the Skidoo 154 Summit X.

Yes, a pump gas turbo would be a blast. There was a guy with us on the demo ride with one and he did some things on that sled that I didn't think were even possible. Very impressive. It's the long term reliability that makes me wonder a bit.

The M series is a wonderful boondocking sled. It doesn't fight you while sidehilling or wear you out. Yes, there are some great deals out there.

Best of luck in what ever you decide.

great feedback frostbite the heavy front end is what i dont like about my 1000 now.the sleds im looking at are 09 do these have diamond drive?is it reliable?

M8

I believe that if the M8 is not enough for you then you will not be satisfied with the M1 either. It's not that much stronger-stock to stock. If your thinking of boost you will get enough out of either one so think about buying the sled with the best track record with boost. M8 in my opinion. PG can work on M8 but not much out there for M1 with pg. I think the '09 M8 can run around 200hp with Cutler or BD pg kits and thats 200hp where ever you go which is a lot more hp at 8,000' than you could ever hope for with M1000 and mods. I love the 2010 M8 the way it is and if I was going to boost a 2stroke it would be an M8 but I'm a little skeptical about longevity.

plus you should be able to get a 1000 cheaper than a m8. not sure whats up with that nowadays but whatever.

true.had my m1000 for around 3999 and no interest.m7s an m8s are selling everyday for more.wierd sheet.guess everybody likes smaller engines.

Go big or stay home!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding.............The M1000 is very easy to take weight off of and add tons of power too. The torque is insane on these things. Drop the front of the skid to the lower hole in the tunnel and it's a different feeling sled in the snow. Much lighter feeling in the front end. Just like motorcycles, once you've had a liter bike it's impossible to go back down in size. M1000 all the way!
