indy 800 tripple... what was I thinking

So my dad decided he wanted to try sledding and I think that's awsome I'm 31 and I got my son out there for his first time this season so three generations riding together is pretty cool .... BUT my dad decided he wanted to suprise me so he bought his own sled with zero idea what he was looking for other than an 800 with a 151+ track.

So he got a 94 ( I think ) indy storm tripple 800 that was most likely a pretty hot sled in it's day. It's got HRP extensions to a 151 2" track and tripple pipes ( that have seen better days ) with "fixed" mufflers ... loudest thing I have ever heard.

So we go riding this weekend and it starts really good and we head up the trail and all seems good. We reached a play area and the thing does not pull for nothin. I jump on and it seams to run ratty off idle ( idles smooth ) , clutch grabs at around 4,000 but no hole shot, you can't make the track spin to take off for nothing, it continues to run ratty and not pull till around 6,800-7,000 and then it cleans up and pulls like a mother.

I took the sled home with me to work on it to see if I can't make this thing work better so far I've got the carbs out found them clean with 32.5 pilots 1/4 turn on the screw and 320 main ... the carbs have dial-a-jets installed in the back of the carbs as well. Jetting does not fit with the listing on the hood , it lists 35 pilots 1 1/2 on the air screws and mains of 330-340-350 for the elevation

I also found that one of the rollers in the primary seems stuck, other than that I can only tell it's a blue spring. I want to yank it off and make sure it's working right but I don't have a puller, is there a way to do it on these sleds with out a puller ? Like packing the clutch with grease then screwing in a ____ sized bolt to force it off, or am I stuck buying a puller to pop the clutch just once? My skidoo and arctic cat puller don't fit :(

Also I found the sled to have two CDI's on it. One is a plastic unit bolted to the oil tank and apeals to be stock but it's not hooked up. The other was stuffed over by the oil tank and apeal to be a salvage yard part and has " 91 xlt efi " writen on the bottom.

So any help, or while you at it advise you can give me then I will be more than willing to listen. If anything jumps out at you then let me in on it.

well, a few issues you can address...

Ive got a 93 750 trip and have set it up with a 151" and it flat out rips. But, I have changed about everything.

First thing is, Polaris jetted them FAT from the factory. I dropped three sizes on my carbs from factory to start out with. The second thing, I would find the right cdi box for it, sure doesnt sound like you have the right one... plus there was never a "91 xlt efi" XLTs started in 93 and were never an efi... I would start there....

Another thing to look at is the gearing, Polaris geared the storm stupid from the factory again, 23/37.... I changed mine to 20/39 and went with 8 tooth drivers to accommodate the 2" paddle track.

I could go into primary and secondary clutching but this could get super long... but if you want to know my exact settings, drop me a PM and i will let ya know.

good luck, hope ya get it to rip!

get a rxl ignition box it will let the storm spin to 9 grand no problem thats what i did

I will be my left nut that the ignition box that's on there IS a 91 RXL EFI box... Someone just wrote XLT instead of RXL. I would try to plug it into the stock box and see how it runs, or if the stock box even works.

If you have a stuck roller in that sled it would account for a good portion of what your seeing run ability wise. Sacked out clutch springs would also do that. How old are the clutch springs in the sled? Your problems definitely seem to be clutching related.

If I were you before I did anything else to that sled I would rebuild both the primary and secondary clutches... Then see how it acts The storm has a fairly unique clutch taper so your best of to rebuild the clutch insead of trying to replace it.

Sadly with that storm your going to have buy the puller and probably wont use it for anything else other than that sled. Now days most dealers wont even have one you can use.

Hmm, I went searching for a puller yesterday and found a bunch that listed for a p-85 in that era ... is that not the correct puller?

Not necessarily the Puller has to match the taper of the clutch. Most of the Fugi's if not all of them were the same. When they went to the liberty thats when things really started changing. But what I have found with clutch pullers is unless it says SPECIFICALLY that it fits the machine your looking at using it on not to use it.

Here you go this is the one you need. $20.95 they have 10 on hand youd probably have it by Saturday or monday if you order it now.

OK so the CDI is an RXL 650 efi ... not what I wrote above ... oops. So that is a good thing correct? I will use the wires from the stocker to extend it to the stock locations to clean things up a bit.

After some drama I was able to get the clutch off. I purchased a puller from a local shop for 49.99 and it striped the threads off it's self. I took it back and bought another, well that one broke off in the clutch. I got luck and was able to tack weld an old socket to the end of the puller and back it out.

I decided to try some of my old millwright tricks and packed the clutch with grease from the grease gun, teflon tape on a 3/4 16tpi (fine thread) bolt and threaded it in and .... bang off she came. This worked very well and other than the mess left behind I would go this route over a puller anyday. Best part is that it cost me 4.00 for the bolt ( and 50.00 in fuel for three trips to the dealer ).

So I get the clutch mostly apart but I'm down to the triangle piece that contains the rollers and buttons. I got the lock nut off but how do I get this piece off? Is it threaded , pressed, tapers, or splined on there??

Also is there a cheaper option to replace the rollers than 25.00 each or a complete rebuild kit? I mean can I just rebush the rollers?

From what I read on Dynotech the RXL cdi spins higher but actually makes less HP peak that what the storm CDI does. something like 5-7 HP less.

As for the piece your talking about its the spider you need a tool to remove that as well. This is what it is.

This thread will tell you more about what you need to take the clutch all apart.
