IF...you decide to go to the Crater..Be VERY CAREFUL!! The Crevasses are starting to open up up there. Went up there Saturday 5-19-2012...went across one about 16" wide...with an "ABYSS DEPTH"..I am figuring maybe 2 weeks to go up there...then after that you will be your own little "FEAR FACTOR"

Will post some pics and video later!

There are sleds and at least one body that were never found.....that was back in the '70's, maybe early '80's.
Best to avoid going higher than bighouse this late in the season....IMO.

And make sure you know where the Wilderness boundary is, regardless of when you go up there. I always assumed it went right to the crater, but apparently not. There seem to be an increasing number of climbers who are getting pissed about sledders crossing the boundary up at the crater. You can see there thoughts on the future of Baker here:

Having fished a buddy out of a crevasse high up on Baker years ago. I could not agree more with this statement.

Too in the year to make a run for the crater.

Crater

I was there for a fatality I guess 10 years ago, perfect spring day and I end up at the crater BSing with some riders. We moved on to the the horsey coral and up the chute. Barley pops in hand sitting on the look out deck when the chopper came by. We went back to hood only to find out a sleder went in. We arrived with sar and the sheriff. I quickly tied 3 sleds together for an anchor and down went sar, found the sled and no body. He'd quit screaming an hour before we got there. The guy made a short cut of a switch back and dropped in. Very sad day as I listened to the brother call his dad and the victim had the truck keys in his pocket! Pay attn when your
up there and go by bighouse it's a better route!

no one wins

few seem to care anymore about following the rules at baker and or much any where else

wonder how the skiers and f/s would do with no more help keeping that difficult road in check??

pretty long ski from the baker hiway with no parking without the sled community, in my view.

the local sled club has gone way beyond in keeping that area open for EVERYBODY

Bighouse is NOT the way to go! There were NO tracks going up that way..Way to many cracks. The route going up there was to the left..A LOT of sled tracks going that way...which is the way I took...STILL...Not recommending going up there. It was wicked enough just going across that unexpected 16 inch crack in the snow...and looking straight down as we crossed it!

Actually we ran into about 15 hikers that were up there at the Crater.Had good conversation with them...they also said thanks as a year ago a hiker got hurt and were fortunate enough to have someone on a sled take them out of there. But yes...obeying the boundries is the bottom line. Two years ago a friend of mine and I gave 2 hikers a ride up through Schreibers Meadow...saved them about two hours of hiking.
