Icons of the sport

UFC- Royce Gracie

I have to disagree, although very good and a founder of ju-jitsu in the sport of MMA. I would have to say Chuck Liddell is more "iconic", possibly even GSP.

As far as UFC/MMA goes
I agree Chuck is more Iconic, maybe even Fedor or Dan Henderson. (Dan just beat Fedor fyi by KO)

But the best of all Gracies/Grapplers hands down was Rickson Gracie.. The best grapplers in the world, ie. Wrestling, Jiu jitsu, Judo. etc etc etc... all agree he is by far the most dangerous man in the discipline.

He wasn't just a founder of ju-jitsu, he was the founder of the UFC. Back when it was about the toughest guy on the planet. You didn't have weight classes, 5 minute rounds, or any of that. You just fought till somebody couldn't stand up, then you went back into the locker room, and got ready to fight a half hour later. He was beating up guys that weighed 400lbs, and he only weighed 175. 14-2-3 was his record, and his losses came after he was already really retired. That's an icon IMO!

Icaman was good, but he wasn't any better that Tito when he was in his prime.

I wish they still did it like this.

I know he wasn't founder of ju-jitsu, I meant in the world of MMA/UFC. Now didn't he do some amazing things, yes. Unfortunately the UFC did not have the same popularity as it does now. When I think of an "icon" that is someone who is recognized for their accomplishments within there sport by others who don't necessarily follow said sport.

Now comparing Chuck to Tito is another argument, IMO Chuck was a better fighter and more exciting to watch.... Not to mention Tito dodged Chuck for a long time.

IMO Rickson was the best of the Gracies, some of his old tournaments are insane to watch. Just an animal!

The sport of MMA is just evolving, much more technical then the old days of UFC. Look at the fight between Hughes and Royce. Royce was dominated durning that fight. Same reason Chuck was beaten, you have to evolve and improve to stay on top.

The Gracies had a huge part in the start up of the UFC, that is correct. Primarily Rorion Gracie, with the help of Art Davies. UFC came about from the Gracies showing up 1 dojo/school at a time and kicking the best of the bests @ss. Long before that they were holding tournaments in Brazil and around the world. After being seen in the US kicking everyones @ss Davies started a tournament along with Rorion "war of the worlds" which later Became UFC 1. Art Davies wanted Rickson Gracie to be the one fighting for the Gracies in UFC1 but Rorion wanted Royce who was the youngest, smallest and least accomplished black belt in the family to be the one so that they could truly showed the Gracie dominance.

I cheated and "Googled" his name. 3 time world waterski champion. Also went to the finals or worlds in 9 other sports (rowing, bike, swimming, running, etc).
