Hows is a Ford V10 for pulling?

Thread Rating
1.00 star(s)
I've got an 08 service truck with the V-10, it might make 362 HP but I'm sure it's at 4500 plus RPM. It seems like it really starts to pull then it upshifts or the rev limiter cuts in and spoils the fun.

I think Banks has some good info/dynos etc. on their website. Iv never owned one but i have a few friends and other a few other people I know enough to trust their opinions and the popular consensus is that the Ford v10 is not a incredibly powerful motor, and it gets crappy mileage. But it is an big block so:

1. It should pull about anything you want (within reason)
2. It wont get good milage

If you ain't got the funds to get a fancy new diesel, or any new truck for that matter, this truck will get you where you want to go.

Yep they were so great.....GM decided to make a collectors item out of them. Maybe one day They will come out with a very special truck with it in it. Kinda like the ubber cool Camaro poser cars!

One week old 08 V-10 F350 Crew, auto, 4.10"s sittin in the driveway. Went from a 7.3 PSD. It doesnt have the power my chipped 7.3 had by any means but I only got 14 MPG with the 7.3L and with the V-10 so far I am seeing 12. It will pull anything i need to put behind it. Love how quiet it is and the 08 is a big step up from the other years IMHO. No regrets so far.

By the way, the new V10 is 362 HP and 457 ftlbs. A bit more than the 8.1 GM

we never said that they didn't have power but it's wound to the nutzs to get it.

The V10 is really nothing more than the 5.4 with 2 more cylinders. The 5.4 likes to rap out big time. I had 2 of them in F-150's in the past and they were a very reliable motor. Both had over 100K on them when I got rid of them and the only thing I had go wrong on either was one blew one of the coils. Thats it. I pulled some pretty heavy loads with those 5.4's and yep you had to let em rip but they took it all day long every day. Thats why I decided to give the V10 a go. I honestly would have gone 6.4 diesel but we had to keep the payments at a very strict level for a business deal we are working on. The diesel could not be made to fit our payments we required. Again tho, not dissapointed in the least.

The numbers work like this:

362 HP @ 4750 (yep wound up like a big dog)
457 ft. lbs. @ 3250 (right where the trans seams to hold it when pulling a hill)

But if you are going to two a 26ft enclosed trailer I'd think you'll need more than a v10. If you are DEAD set on a gas truck - look for the 8.1 chevy. Good motor and you get the Allison - best tranny out there for the common man.

I already have the trailer, it is a 26ft Pace 7 1/2 ft wide so it is a little smaller then most. Now I am pulling it with an Expedition with a 5.4L. We make it, but some of the hills I am in 1st gear, 15 mph. I dont think I would try a long road trip with this setup. That is why I am looking for a new truck., plus the prices of these things now days is unreal (cheap).

Thanks for all the comments.

The sole reason is they wouldn't pass emissions. The 8.1 is still being used in medium duty trucks and marine applications. Ever see a Ford V-10 in a boat?

I have heard the 8.1L chev uses alot of oil, like 1qt every 1000 miles. Is this true on the newer ones?

normaly the 8.1s will use about a quart every 3000 miles so not to bad. unless theres other issues, ive seen some use a bit more and some a bit less.

I have an '01 and I don't have any leaks, and I go through roughly a quart every 1500 miles, depending on how hard I'm running it. GM big blocks use oil, period.

Not to mention cylinder head issues. Lots of them. Got 3 8.1's in our topkicks... One of them pounded out most of the intake valves in under 80k. Or 50K miles for those of you who use those units.
And ditto on the oil consumption.

no kidding on the cylinder head issues? Thats one i haven't ever even heard as a major problem. But i'm really only pulling personal expericence from about 25 trucks with the 8.1 in them. and all of them with over a 165k with out a lick of motor trouble. Good to know though.

Sorry for getting way off teh v10 topic but when you get info you can use from odd places

i never said they didnt use oil, just that 1 qt every 3000 seems to be average from what ive heard. i know mine uses a bit more than that especially if im rodding it around and what not. ive never heard of the head issues, not saying its not true just ive never heard it, i heard they had exauhst manifold issues. u can put some miles on them though, my brothers 03 8.1 has 165,000 miles and my 01 8.1 only has 80,000 and his truck still runs neck and neck with mine and the only problem hes had was the water pump went out.

I never said ya did. :face-icon-small-sho

Way at the end--If you want to make a pulling machine out of that V-10--go get the full on BANKs KIT ON IT.

THAT IS ALL i HAVE FOR ADVICE.

and diesel vs gas was brought up, so i posted an advantage to getting a v10...use some your brain and try to have a complete thought.

again was the op asking about diesels? nope. so using you logic in your other post we have to stay on topic. use your brain if there is anything left in that head of yours.

I had a V10 Ford SD. Never had any problems with the motor. I put quite a few miles on pulling a 27ft Haulmark. Fuel mileage was horrible and every hill, even very small hills it would downshift. When the V10 downshifts NOTHING happens powerwise, but the noise is deafening! Even without a trailer my V10 did that. If you are stuck on a Ford gasser the V8 would be better. If you are just stuck on a gasser the 6.0L or 8.1 would be even better choice.

You really should think about a Duramax. Makes a V10 seem like a moped! I will never go back.:beer;

Hmm will have to look into that. I have been trying to find some goodies for the new rig. So far all I have found for the 08 is a drop in filter and a few programmers/chips. No cold boxes, no exausts!

I did those same mods to my last 5.4 and it really made a big difference to open it up and let it breath. Gas mileage raised significantly.

junk

Gas eating, gutless boat anchors!!! The place I have has had several and they can't even get out of their own way, and you had better know where all the gas stations are. The Powerstrokes are way better, but if you want a real truck Dodge Cummins is the only way to go.....

We have an '08 Ford service truck with a V-10. It's gutless...plus it only gets 8.5 MPG empty. Pulling it gets 6 mpg. We have an '06 Chevy small block that pulls our trailers much better and w/ better mpg's. V-10's are in general a bad design and the benefits you gain do not outweigh the loss in mpg's and reliability. I'd stay away...unless your going to want to replace it with a V-8 or a diesel at about 120K.(Thats about the life expectancy.) There are always exceptions to the rule, but in general more moving parts means more potential for early failure. I'd buy a diesel if you want a BIG truck. My $ .02.

Don't pay attention to the above post, it's either bull chit or something's wrong with the service truck.

My last four trucks in order of ownership were a 01' 7.3 Powerstroke, 03' 6.0 Powerstroke, 04.5' Dodge Cummins HO, and my most recent diesel was a 06' Chevy Duramax LBZ. I've had extensive experience with the power of modern diesels and they are awesome. :D

With that said, I traded in the Duramax on a 2008 F250 with the 3 valve 362 HP V-10 mated to the 5-speed Torqshift trans. It has no lack of power when it comes to towing and it will pull the same 27' enclosed trailer up Thompson Pass within 3-5 mph of the Duramax. (We're talking 70 mph vs 74 mph with the Duramax) It revs higher and it does shift more but that is the nature of a gas motor. Overall I'm pleased with the powertrain and after putting on true duals with a custom programmer it's actually pretty quick for a 7600 lb. truck as well.

I typically get around 11 mpg all around and strictly highway it will pull 14 mpg. Pulling the enclosed trailer over hilly terrain it usually gets right around 8 mpg depending on how hard I drive the truck.
