Hows is a Ford V10 for pulling?

By the way, in response to the last post which I just had time to read LOL. My Dodge Cummins was the biggest POS out of any truck I've owned. Not a horrible truck by any means but certainly inferior to either the Chevy or Ford. That's why I could only handle keeping the thing for 6 months.

Chevy has, IMO, the best powertrain ever put in a truck with the Duramax/Allison Combo. I was very happy with the motor and tranny but again, the rest of the truck is inferior to the Ford.

Ford has the most superior "truck" on the road in their 08' Superduties, I just wish I could get one with a Duramax in it. :face-icon-small-coo

With the EPA completely screwing up the diesel market, they no longer pencil out as well as they used to. The mileage has gone down considerably with ULSD and the most recent emissions tier. This in conjunction with an $0.80 per gallon premium to buy diesel fuel makes the gassers all that much more attractive. And as we have already discussed the Only high torque gasser left on the market is the 457 Ft-Lb. V10. :beer;

Put 100000+ miles on one. Real powerhouse will do the job for you. Pulled a 27' travel trailer and my snowmobile trailers. Hauls butt.

Didn't get mileage to brag about in SW Colorado mountains and won't talke about diesel but fyi the V10 is solid.

Like all big blocks starts to get a bit tired around 90,000 but still does the job.

We have a 04 F250 w/ A 6.0 Powerstroke 4wd.

also,

We have 06 F350 dually w/ the Triton V-10 4wd.

Both were set up for our max load of 24,000 lbs., Camper, 3-place Horse trailer & 3 horses, plus gear.

When the PSD carried this load it had 37 inch tires on it. There was NEVER a want for better pulling power, and I could crusie up most all inclines at the posted speed limit if I wanted to.
Corrected mileage was 8-9 mpg pulling load, 16.2 hwy unloaded.

Now the V-10 has the job of pulling the beeg load, 4.11 gears, it's in tip top tuning, has all the FORD reflashs, and & K&N + Magnaflow exhaust.

It's HEAVY pulling POWER abilities are dismal at best, but it gets the job done and is safe due to it being a duallie. Sometimes this fall while on our hunts, I could not maintain 40 mph on the steep inclines, very unresponsive when power is needed, You MUST alter your driving techniques when towing with this motor.
MPG = 5.7 to 6.3 with the heavy loads, 7.5 mpg with a 20 ft. inclosed & 3 sleds at hwy speeds., 13.4 hwy unloaded.

We bought the duallie for its camper carrying capabilities, and it does it quite well. I bought it when deisel was $4.90 a gal, But, if i were to do it all over again, I would go back to a PSD. Having no noticable power when needed in a situation is un-nerving, BUT, the truck itself is excellent, so we will keep it. However, If you want a great running 06 F350 V-10 duallie, w/ 22,000 miles, sell it to ya for $28,000

I would be very skeptical of anyone telling you the V-10 is great for towing, it is not. Light loads it would be tolerable, but you need to work the numbers on if the added expense of a Diesel is for you, to me, I will never buy a gaser for towing again. We love our F350 even with the V-10, but wished it had a diesel.

Agreed, Gassers aren't your best bet for pulling those kinds of loads. In fact you should probably be running a F450. If you are planning on keeping that truck a gear swap to 4.30s+ would probably be a beneficial investment.

If you plan on pulling in the 8,000-10,000 lb. range the 3 valve V10 has plenty of power to meet or exceed the speed limit on all but the most steep mountain passes. I've towed 14,000 on a few occasions and it did fine around town but don't plan on pulling a mountain pass at 65 mph.

Another factor to consider is the elevation you're towing at. If I lived somewhere like Colorado I would go with a turbocharged motor if it was at all possible. In Alaska, our mountain passes rarely exceed 3400 feet at the summit so you're still getting good hp relative to the higher elevation passes some of you tow at.

Good point!
Anyone who goes sledding in the mountains will appreciate how much power an N/A engine loses at altitude.

I have herd alot of bad things about the 2008 v10s but my dad has a 2000 350 v10 and we pull a 6 place trailer no problem. alittle slow on hills but pulls great. it has 125000 miles on and pulls good as it ever has. if you worried about the gas miliage, we put an k n N air filter and got 2-3 better mpg and also a flowmaster helps. those to aftermarket parts are about 600 bucks. overall this truck is a beast and a great truck. you wont regret it.

Like what, Please share?

They fixed all the issues from the older years (like spark plugs blowing out of the head). Added a 3v head in 2005, Increased the power output 50 HP and added the Torqshift Tranny, (An exceptional 5 speed auto). The powertrain is identical to the 2005, 2006 and 2007 models which are about as bullit proof as a gasser gets LOL.

I have an 02 V10 crew cab, long bed, 4x4 that I bought new and it's been great. We pull our 5th wheel and boat in the summer(Texas suicide train) and our 18' enclosed with two sleds in the winter. No big gasser truck pulling much of anything is going to get great mileage. My buddy who owns a diesel says most diesel guys lie about the mileage anyway. I don't know. I have never owned one. It's probably a wash. Diesels cost more initially, fuel is more, and so is maintainience but I hear power is great . To each his own. My v10 works for me.

At least with a gasser you can get into a garage for service work seems like diesel mechanics are always swamped, and repairs for gasser are usually cheaper.

V-10 update

We have done just about everything you can with our V-10 except for a turbo, which is just silly anyway, the power is better but not within a moon shot of what our Powerstroke does when pulling, but we will live with it since we really like the truck (V-10 dually).

Mileage still sucks, but oh well.

Have put on larger pipes & a performance muffler (Magnaflow), Powerlabs reprogramming, K&N drop in, and all the FOMOCO updates and it runs well.... but still a slug compared to the weakest deisel (That be the Duracrap :D)

I have one for work and it is a gas hog with a trailer past the 10,000# range.
The dually is pretty sure footed and the ride isn't all that bad. The truck still takes a football field to get turned around. With the way it is set up, weighs 12K and gets @10 mpg twisting the motor at any little incline at 5200rpms.Once hooked up to a 20K trailer it gets 4-5mph with little hill pulling abilities. My opinion is it is not a heavy puller(10K+ trailers).

I have an '03 F-250, 3.73 gears, 6 spd. manual. I really like it, have pulled around 13000 lb off of the reciever. As has been stated, it needs to rev to make power. I'm up around 200,000 kms (120,000 mi.) and the only trouble so far was a coil. Cost $50 to replace. I've gotten as high as 18mpg (imperial gallons) on the highway, driving like a loser just to see how high I could get the mileage. Pulling a 20' enclosed trailer with 8 dirt bikes at 85 mph (in a rush to get down to the St. Anthony dunes), I got 8 mpg. I do think that the stick shift helps with the mileage a little. With that said, I would like a diesel, will probably try to get one next time around. But I do love the truck- my buddies have half-ton 5.4's and I can eat them alive in drag races. It's kind of funny, because they keep getting new trucks every couple of years and always think this time they'll beat me. Hasn't happened yet.
