How to stop snow getting into air box

Hi

Building my first snow bike as we speak and I hear more and more the fact that snow will get into the air box and should be one of the main things to check while riding.

I have a ktm 500 exc-f with the new ARO 137 put on.

The dealer says there is no factory solution other than the film cover that goes over the air filter. However it seems not enough and snow can still accumulate into the air box and somehow that must be avoided.. but not a real solution to this problem. Is that right??

Can you guys give me some advice what else I can have installed or whatever solution work best for this problem? Pictures would be good too..

Thanks

I'm running a 2016 500 exc. The problem with the stock air box/outerwear setup is it will eventually pack full of snow if riding in any sort of powder. You'll need to gut the bottom half of the air box and install a pod type setup for the air box.

I removed the air box on my WR put a pod on and build a snow deflector to stop the track throwing snow at the filter.

Simple and super effective, and I had an air box to put on for summer.

Can you post some clear pictures please? Would like to show to my mechanic, thanks.

I have a pod filter too, but you can just use the skin over a dry stock filter on KTMs/huskys and leave the cover off. Doesn't pack in much at all, and if it does you just dig it out. My buddy has this set up, and it's just fine. YZs on the other hand...

I totally removed my airbox completely and run a PST pod intake, absolutely NO issues with snow, pod stays completely clear.

I run a 16 husky fc450

Just spent some time sealing off the top hole as well as the gapping along the side panel with Pre-Filter material to help eliminate snow ingestion. In theory it should work well. I will let you know after some time in the snow!

Those of you running just the hair net cover. MAKE SURE you coat it with a water repellant spray often. I used to just run the cover but run the filter and cover now and my foam filter gets clogged with moisture from a day of riding, but better it than running water through the motor as it acts as a steam cleaner removing needed oil on your cylinder walls.

yes I've heard that solution also... What water repellant should be used?

Everyone I've seen that has done this has used camp dry, I kinda wonder if it looses its breathability when you add the waterproof spray.

I also have a 2017 ktm 500 exc and a 2018 timbersled 137 Aro that I just installed but my chain that came with the kit is about one link short was wondering if yours was long enough? I also worry about the air filter situation in deep powder and those are the days you live for and the last thing you want to do is have problems with it running on that day.

That is exactly the reason i told my buddy to just buy one that we know will work on his bike. Not that expensive relative to bumming on a three day epic storm when you realize your “system” doesn’t actually work in “all” conditions.

Do you know if there is a fitment sheet to tell you what front sprocket to run?

Couldn’t find it for my yz fit kit but here is my 16 timbersled #s for my cr 500. Look right by my thumb. I don’t have an aro.

Thanks, also did some more research last night found out that I need to swap my 14 for a 13. Thanks again for the reply.

The product we use is silicone water-guard made by atsko. Found it at north 40. I still carry a spare by filter on big trips as I still get moisture in my foam on good powder days.
