how to mount your shovel on your sled

Ideally a shovel on person and on sled, that way if YOU are burried there is also another shovel for someone else to use..... :beer;:)

this is what I am going to go to this year. I have a few shovels . I always carry one but it is a pia to get to it every time a friend is stuck. I would rather keep it in my backpack and grab the one from the sled. Also, if someone without a shovel gets stuck, he can use one fo them.

If you have a can on your xp there is more than enough room next to it there, I carry one in my pack and one there, I have 2 belt holders riveted to the plastic there and it works great, other than that I would say get a bag for the back tunnel right from ski doo and that would work great also. just my 2 cents tho. I don't have any pics right now but will get some up in the next couple of days.

The first bag is a backpack/tunnel bag, I have this mounted on my tunnel. It holds a shovel, probe ect...

My buddy has this one mounted on his tunnel, it also hold a shovel

And yes I also have a Klim pac on my back with a shovel

I mounted a Dry Bag from West Marine with 4 stainless nautical loops. I have a Burton Aluminum shovel I turn upside down snd bungy it down on top of the bag. Never any issues and doesn't look to bad. Also I never leave home without my BCS shovel in my pack. It;s way easier to carry 2 shovels imo.

It's getting to the point that more and more people will have a shovel on their sleds as well, as more people start getting avy packs. No point getting a avy pack only to have to take it off to get your shovel out, it can't help you when it's laying on your sled. I'm thinking about getting the sled solutions new tunnel pack for x-mas

Ive ridden with a guy that has this setup.works great 2.He riveted some belt clips for both the handle and scoop.

This is a sensitive topic. I live in Alaska. I've been in an avalanche too. Try to ride like we do in Alaska. You go with several friends, preferably guys that can ride. When you watch someone highmark, everyone stops and sticks together and everyone watches that one guy highmark. Now you have a bunch of eyes paying attention to this one guy. If the guy thats doing the highmarking goes down, we all fire up the sleds and head to the very last place we saw him and just dowsntream too. Maybe thats totally different from the way the nay-sayers ride. When we go highmarking we play smart. So anyways back to the shovel, I got it strapped on the tunnel.

A little off topic here, but how many of you actually use your shovel to dig out a stuck sled? I have been riding in the mountains for 10 years and can't remember ever having to use my shovel. If I get stuck on a climb I stomp down the snow below me and pull the sled around. If I get stuck on the flat there has allways been someone to help with a ski pull to get going again. Just wondering

I dont carry a shovel in my pack. Thats just what I need to get beat up by for when I get tossed over the bars. People chew me out too and it's like this. If your sleds buried and your shovels buried chances are your probably buried too. If your buddy is in an avy, your gonna ride up to the last spot you saw him anyways to get there as quick as you can. The whole carry it in your pack thing is some myth some dude from college made up who probably doesn't have any time behind a throttle. Secondly, when I get tossed over the bars I got this nice solid metal thing in my pack to break ribs and other stuff. I prefer to be flexible so I can just take the impact rather than brace for it and get this shovel rammed through my back.

right Mike Duffy who preaches that is a hack:rolleyes:

Not saying that a shovel couldn't hurt ya, but what if you are at the bottom taking a chit in the trees, etc when the hill slides burying your bud who was climbing and your sled gets buried as well?

if you wanna attach under the hood, the voile shovels fit into spare belt holders awsome.

back to the concept of not wanting a shovel on the back cuz it hurts you.. i dont know how you wear them that they can hurt you, but i know my shovel has saved me from some serious back injuries multiple times, getting rolled over by my sled, the weigh lands on the shovel head on the outside of my pack, then distributes it through my pack onto my back.. 500# over your whole back, not bad, 500# on a small point, OUCH. not saying they could never in a million years hurt you, i just find myself protected quite a bit from them, then again, i dont know many people who roll over themselves as much as i like to.

i say good on you for not neading a shovel, shovels come out for full on digging adventures, our grouop all has snow bunjee's now, so it cut down on the digging a LOT, but still, sometimes you just cant pop out of the cave's ya dig.

I carry a shovel in my pack (regular avy shovel) and I also carry a folding shovel in my sled. Mine rides in the seat pouch. For the XP in question you'll have to buy some kind of a bag for one like I carry.

You think I'm ever gonna get that far away from my sled? I'm not walking through waist deep snow anymore than I have to. Sled's right there.

Ok so I finally got mine attached to my sled. I also carry one in my pack. Never can have too many shovels. :) Anyway this is how i did mine.
I got the bungees with clips from lowes, and the handle clips from Big Pine Power Sports. We will see how it works but should work great.

Im still working on my story but I just broke my ankle BAD on a recent trip to Valemount, and there was no way if I was alone for any length of time I was getting back up the hill to my sled... Ride with your shovel at ALL times!!
