How do you guys mount your shovels on your sled? I would like to mount my shovel to my xp anyone got any pics or any ideas on how to go about it.

that the thing i dont care a pak or anything i am in the ditches and in the drifts is where I get stuck so I would like it mounted to the sled if possible

k thanks i will look into that do you know if it would mount on a 2010 summit x 146

Oh, Sorry I didnt see your location. WPS sells shovel handle clamps that can be installed anywhere. The shovel snaps in woth the blade attached and they can be mounted anywhere big enough for the shovel.

I used to carry mine on my clutch guard with belt holder clips. Everyone chewed me out for not having it in my pack so I finally saw the light and put it in my pack.

I dont carry a shovel in my pack. Thats just what I need to get beat up by for when I get tossed over the bars. People chew me out too and it's like this. If your sleds buried and your shovels buried chances are your probably buried too. If your buddy is in an avy, your gonna ride up to the last spot you saw him anyways to get there as quick as you can. The whole carry it in your pack thing is some myth some dude from college made up who probably doesn't have any time behind a throttle. Secondly, when I get tossed over the bars I got this nice solid metal thing in my pack to break ribs and other stuff. I prefer to be flexible so I can just take the impact rather than brace for it and get this shovel rammed through my back.

seen a shovel handle that was mounted on the belt guard go through somebodys leg when they crashed.i know freak thing but i bet it hurt.

Most packs allow you to carry the shovel inside, in this case it's not going to beat you up.

Probably not true.
The best reason for having it on you back, is that in avy you will likely be separated from your sled.

In recent years many AIARE and AMGA, certified instructors/guides have have moved to recommend that tools (shovel handle, blade and probe) be stowed securely inside of the pack to prevent them from being stripped away while caught in a slide. It makes sense. Anyone who has gone for a ride in moving snow can tell you about the forces at play.

Bottom line, put your tools where you want to, however if they are on the sled, don't count on them being there when you need them most (which is likely when you least expect it).

To the OP.
If I didn't live in the mountains I wouldn't be carrying a pack either.
Probably would use a tunnel bag if mine weren't already mounted under the hood from the factory.

Use a bungee cord with about 5 to 6 turns around the shovel handle and the tunnel frame tube (phazer mtn) .... works great and is easy to remove (even when frozen) plus has a bit of give if snagged.
Shovel and axe are mounted to the machine(s) ... ride in the ditches and woods but not in the mountains in which case the shovel in the pack would probably be better.

Doo makes a couple bags that hold a shovel and are made for the XP.....one also doubles as a backpack if desired, that's the one I have and recommend. Ideally a shovel on person and on sled, that way if YOU are burried there is also another shovel for someone else to use.....just another option :beer;:)

Take two minutes and think of why leaving your shovel and probe on your sled is not a smart idea. Might as well just leave it at home. An example would be you and a buddy are caught in a avalanche you get bucked off your sled. When the you get up lucky enough to not be buried you find that your sled is buried and you cant find it. Your buddy is also missing. Now what??????

Hey guys, he didn't ask if he SHOULD carry the shovel on the sled. Any opinions beyond helping him mount it on his sled is just people spouting off when they should just keep their mouths shut. Maybe he doesn't ride is ave areas, you don't know. Not everyone sits at the bottom they'll never get up all day. I carry my handle on my belt guard and the shovel head in my trunk. So do my freinds. I understand the chance we take and I accept the percentages. If you don't like it don't ride with me. I don't need any new freinds anyway.
