How to avoid arm and leg cramping toward the end of the day? Is there anyway?

I've never heard of Magnesium before, thanks for that, I'll add some into my diet as well. Another thing that could, I take that back WOULD, help would be yoga! I'm 18 and a senior in high school, play alot of sports and yoga has improved every bit of everything that I do. Its lots of fun, great on your body and mind, and helps you become more flexible which will also result in less cramping.

As a former college athlete, our trainers used to feed us the usual bananas and water/gatorade, but a little known fact is that Mustard is really good for cramps too. Used to keep a bottle of mustard in the training bag. Once we got cramps he would feed us water, advil, and mustard. Straight from the bottle.

If your PEE is dark yellow, you are severely dehydrated. Hydration starts the night before the ride--force drink as much as possible--no coffee or booze. All the mineral advice is excellent--take an aspirin at lunch and drink at least 1/2 gallon H2O during the ride. Let us know how you make out,

I have had a problem with quad and back cramps all my life. I take potassium and magnesium plus I stay hydrated more than anyone I ride with. But its not enough a lot of the time. So I drink Gookinaid or G2 while riding and I always carry Quinine tablets. Your pharmacist can get you some cheap.

cramping

The cramping you are exsperiencing is likely dehydration as a lot of people have pointed out. I'm 48 and have tried everything as I've had this problem for years, having exrteme cramping in calves, ham strings, feet, fore arms, hands etc. etc. I'm not a doctor but the solution is water, water, water and milk as it has calcium, other dairy products work as well but, if cholestral is a worry you might consider skim milk. I recieved this advice from a dietitian.

I threw all the other pills or suppliments in the trash, the water works. For any extented, strenuous excercise such as mountain biking, motor biking, sledding or what ever I make sure I hydrate the throughout the day or night before and during the activity, this is very important. I also stretch the problem muscels prior to the activity which also helps, good luck.

Water and bananas.

And hit the weights.

And go jogging a couple days a week. Run stairs in a gym or run the hiking trails.

Ok awesome stuff to know. I will try most of that stuff, see how it works. I try to drink a lot, but always run out of gatorade on the mountain. :) I'll try and pack more, see how it goes. I'm 16 and very active, so I don't think that it's that my muscles are out of shape. Must be a dehydration thing like most of you are saying. If more water doesn't fix it, I'll look for some pills, see how I do with those. No It wasn't my first ride. I ride almost everyday. But only cramp up on those all day rides.

when you feel thirst you are already dehydrated. less red bull more water

thats a very good point!

also, like has been mentioned before, you will benifit from stretching before any work out. just be careful. stretching a muscle temporarily weakens it. It is important to get a good mix a balistic (such as swinging your arms, throwing motions etc..) as well as static (your normal holding positions) stretches BEFORE you work out.

Cramping

It doesn't matter how good of shape you're in, if you're subject to cramping and you become dehydrated you'll have problems, I stay in shape all year round and at 48 I'm in as good as shape as anybody we ride with (mid twentys and up or better. I ride mountain bike all summer and fall and the eliptical right through sledding season. I tried to ignor this problem for years but as I get older I listen to my body and the water is the most important thing.

As far as I know gatorade is CRAP, too much sugar. Sucrose, glucose, fructose, all CRAP. Water, water, water with an occasional electrolyte powder supplement. Potassium and sodium helps as well.

If you drink a whole bottle of Gatorade you are consuming about 56 grams of sugar -- this is not required in a normal sedentary lifestyle -- and in this situation it could be considered "bad" for you.

Gatorade Ingredients
water, sucrose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup, citric acid, natural and artificial flavors, salt, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, ester gum, sucrose acetate isobutyrate, yellow 5

Gatorade Nutrition Facts
serving size: 8 fl oz; calories 50; total fat 0g; sodium 110mg; potassium 30mg; total carbs 14g; sugars 14g

I Found this article:

OK, so we'll say it: We don't find Gatorade the slightest bit replenishing. We think it mostly tastes like urine distilled through a coffee machine, but that's less to the point; when we work out, the last thing we want is a sugary thick beverage. We're working out to lose calories; why would we want to pile more on while we trying to rid ourselves of them? (Note: That was a rather effete sentence for a sports blogger to write. Sorry.) We might as well drink Yoo-Hoo. Folks: There's no magic formula Gatorade has discovered that just delivers you more energy. The only magic formula they've discovered is how to market the **** out of your product. People: Just drink water. It's good for you.

kind of humorous..

What I have found out 600xcforme is that if it doesn't have natural sweeteners(fruit juice, honey, stevia, maple syrup) then its crap. I haven't drank a pop, redbull, gatorade, etc. in 1 1/2 years. It is amazing how much better you feel when you quit drinking all that garbage. All that crap is just a marketing scam.
It takes a few days to kick it but you will lose a bunch of fat and feel awesome when you kick all that stuff. my 2cents

Quinine is what you want for muscle cramps. The FDA pulled quinine tablets off the market for prescription 2 years ago. The easiest replacement for the tablets is quinine water/soda water in the mixer section of the soda aisle. Within minutes your muscle cramps will be gone.

Wife is a pharmacist. trust me it works !

Dont drink beer or enegry drinks during yer ride. Stick to the water and/or gatorades. hit the gym 4-5 times a week and do some cardio. You'll fare out. Never ride on a hangover, yer already dried out, cramping is the start of dehydration..........

pedialyte, We used it football for years and later in the military when doing 16+ mile ruck sack marches w/ 60 lbs packs. It's a little pricey but awesome stuff.
