How sketchy is the drive from Laramie to Albany Lodge

We are headed out to the Snowies in March from MN, been to other places (Cooke, Tog, Horns, etc), undestand its all Freeway I-80 out to Laramie, but hows the drive up to Albany Lodge? Steep N Twisty? Wondering if its safer for some first timers to do it in the daylight, or will we be fine as long as the weather is descent. How many minutes to drive from Laramie to Albany Lodge?

It's pretty flat all the way to the lodge. Like dooster said the only time it sucks is when it's not snowing or windy. Good thing it's never windy out there! :)

In March it is typically better than it is now - and right now it can be bone dry or ice - depending on the wind blowing the snow.

The road itself is fairly flat - you are not doing any switchbacks for a mountain pass. The biggest issue is usually the wind.

x2. Bucking the wind is the worst part of it. The roads are usually worse on the flats before you get to the mountain. If there are signs of ice 10 or so miles outside of Laramie it's usually a good indication of icy roads coming up.

We've been there a couple times from Iowa AND it is always windy and always snowing.....fortunately just bad the last couple miles before Albany. Take your time and you will be fine. We usually remind ourselves that half the young female employees out there drive cars and generally make it just fine! (No offense intended)

We can usually count on some nasty weather around spring break out here, march 14-18 this year, always a crap shutte.

As others have said, it's flat and wide open. However, I've never been through there when it's snowing, but icy as you make the last turn and climb into Albany. Normally not a bad drive. Have fun!!

The other thing is it is not busy except for snowmobilers and skiers so even when bad you do not have to worry about any 18 wheelers being dicks. So you can drive it as fast or as slow as you want and not bother anybody.

We drive that road 6 to 12 times a month to ride out of Albany. Its 33 miles to Albany from Laramie. The first 22 can be a lil sketchy if it snows then blows. When you make the turn for the last 11... thats where you can find the nasty conditions. The wind can make that part of the trip completely miserable blowing snow, deep snow, solid ice, ect... I hope this helps. You will be fine. Just slow down, take your time and if its dark watch for deer. Its not a very curvey road at all.

albany

It's a lot like driving on a two lane highway. If you drive it in the dark just don't drive 90. Use common sense, if your not familiar with a rode drive accordingly.

Where can a guy unload its been many many years since i was there???

If your staying at Albany lodge they have a parking lot. If not there is a big parking lot owned by the USFS that you can park in for $5 a day. Longer than 6 days, its feesable to buy the season permit from Albany Lodge ($30).

There was a Kenworth with a 48' flatbed trailer in the lower parking lot above Centennial last Sat. If he can get up there you got no worries. Its all good. Don't sweat it. I used to haul my sled up there behind my college junker car and a trailer.
