How much does this Nytro weigh?

Titanium a-arms
Lightweight skid
carbon fiber wheels---rails would be great too.
lightweight steering post
titanium handle bars
gut the stock tunnel and brace where needed
lightweight drop down brackets
lose the radiator, but upgrade the cooling
lose the light and crappy plastic bracket
titanium bolts everywhere but don't freak out over the price---it is what it is!
No muffler
Lightweight seat
diamond S front clip (chromoly)
get rid of all ther little bulsh@#$# you don't need (if you have it) hand guards, knee pads, tassels, extra wheels ---what ever!

You will get in the 580 range easy, including an intercooled turbo!

Hey Pelon
You have discribed quite the sweet ride for sure. However i have read your post 4 times now and still cant see where you used a small budget to get it to 580 lbs. I think most of us understand that you can get the nytro pretty light with a lot of money but most people start these types of posts with the small phase that is often overlooked and that phase would be "on a small budget" as did Matte Murder in post #15 above. I have spent over 5 grand on mine and i am no where near 580 lbs with a 2008 n/a sled. If i spent another 5 grand I think i would be getting close. if you add it all up in the the end i will have spend 25 grand to get my sled in the same ball park as a brand new 13 grand stock AC,POO or DOO and they would still handle better then my nytro. Professional rider not included in price above.:face-icon-small-coo

I didn't even mention budget because there is no point. I just wanted to provide the "light list" for Matt because there is no such thing as a low budgeting weight reduction for the yamaha's unless you find some awesome used deals.

Let me try and break down what I have spent:

1) 2010 stock sled= $10,000
2) Titanium a arms= $900
3) Seat= $700
4) Rear Lightweight suspension= $900
5) Tunnel/exhaust weight reduction =$0
6) Lightweight drop brackets= $150

This dropped my weight down to 543 wet with the stock 7 gallon tank. (thats less than a 2012 Polaris Pro which runs right around 550 wet, according to Snow West, and lighter than AC, Skdoo also). So I spent $12,650 total.

Turbo weight:
I added an intercooled Alpine with the bigger gas tank that I bought used for $3000, that jumped my weight to 593 wet with 10.6 gallons of gas.

total so far $15,650

Now I have not put some the other stuff on that I listed in the previous post, but I'll keep everyone posted on that, and I am definetly under $25,000.

The new 2013 polaris is really light@ 530 wet, but you can't convince me to buy one because that 800 motor flat out sucks considering reliability. If they ever get that figured out, then I'll give them a try. Put an intercooled turbo system on that and well your around 570lbs or more with a completetly unreliable powerplant----- that does however at least handle well.

Thanks for the budget reminder.

This question comes up constantly generally from guys who are considering making the leap from 2 stroke to 4 stroke. The answer is always the same and always will be the same and thats you will never get your 4 stroke as light as a 2 smoker turboed or otherwise.

I've been riding turbo Yamis for a lot of years now and one of my buddies was always on me about the weight thing even though I've been handing him his a$$ for years. Last year he finally gave in and picked up an MCX Nytro with a ton of aftermarket parts on it. Looking at the sled you'd have thought it would be light and awesome but as it turned out it handled like a POS, it was awful to ride just brutal. So feeling a bit guilty for having talked him into it I took it into my shop and went to work on it. The main issues that were hampering the handling were:

1. It had a trail tank
2. It had that stupid high Skinz seat and he has short legs
3. It had a 16 wide
4. It had Float Evols built for snow cross on it.
5. The after market a-arms had the shock mounts welded in the wrong place.
6. The drivers were not centered so the track rubbed
7. The skid was setup all wrong

I must say though it looked awesome in the pics.

So to fix it we:
1. Went back to a stock fuel tank and added a fuel rack on the rear of the tunnel whick got 25lbs off the nose right out of the shoot. The absolute last thing a Nytro needs is more weight up front (read here go rear mount turbo over SC if you want handling that won't wear you out)

2. Put a stock seat on it which is way easier to step over. The stock seat is only 7 lbs or so so I personally wouldn't waste my money on an after market seat but hey thats just me.

3. Swapped out the 16 wide for a 15 wide, once you are turboed and can make 80 MPH track speed the 16 wide buys you nothing but costs you in the handling department especially if your sled is a 174 JMO

4. Changed out the front shocks to some old stockers but those will be swapped for some Exits this fall, the stockers are still better than the Evols for mountain riding

5. Moved the shock mounts on the a arms to where they should have been in the first place

6. Centered the drivers

7. The sled has an EZ Ride which I've never personaly have never loved but it works OK now that we set it up right.

The point of all this rambling is that making all these changes I didn't drop 1 ounce off the sled but now it handles like a dream, a totally different sled.

Long story short --- ITS ALL IN THE SETUP.

Forget about the weight and if you just can't then maybe this isn't the route for you, think weight balance not weight total cause frankly it'll never be truly light no matter how much you spend.

Nice write up M5 - I agree the guys that can get thier yammie set up never once complain about the weight. All the XP's I ride with just say its so light, ski doo marketing dept should get an award. I have personally rode Xp's that wore me out coming from a SC apex. I have also rode XP's that felt light as a feather and very fun. My yammie while not light as a feather is very fun to ride and doesn't wear me out.

Figure that out and have fun riding and turning the key all winter, and next winter, and next winter....

Pelon and M5
Have come in batting clean up and pretty well wrapped up another discussion on weight loss vs budget for the nytro. Nicely done men. We will just have to wait for the next post on the this subject to pop up. It will!!!! give it time :face-icon-small-coo

Just went through and read all the posts again. Thanks to all who posted useful info. Some of you guys live on the Yami board, I don't and pretty new to snowmobiling too. Man some guys are sensitive about the Nytro, it was like I told them they had a fat wife. I completely get that the Nytro is never going to be light but no use hauling around any extra weight that could be shed cheaply. I am a big guy, 6'4" and 225 now. Lost 50lbs off me over the last few years, that was cheap but not free(of effort). I raced formula fords back in the day and we chopped 50lbs off a car that you would have thought was impossible. Some stuff, like wiring, was free. Some, like titanium bolts and gun drilled axles was far from free. Weight hurts you everywhere, starting, stopping and turning, no matter how much power you have. Again, thank you to all who helped with useful info, that is the best part of these forums other than the cool people I have met both on and off the boards.
