I would advise that if you do go into business for yourself keep it small! NO EMPLOYEES. this is the worst part of business followed closely by the taxes (this is all the money everyone THINKS your making) other than that its great!

I disagree! I think if you go into business for yourself, you should have a minimum of 5 family members working for you. You think life owning a business is tough, try employing family. You have to explain every penny you make or spend and get the guilt trip for having so much and they have so little. Ha ha!

Polzin is right, smaller is better and you can control more. You can make more money by getting larger but expect longer hours and more headaches.

Plumbing Contractor.

Sorry I did'nt mention that mine is a family business as well ! Its all good unless MOM thinks she has an opinion.Dad and I never have a problem. we are lucky by comparison though. NEVER, EVER, hire a freind or most family members.

If you can afford to start a small biz on the side & keep your job....NO RISK!!!

I had (or still have I guess) a DJ service.
Did wedding dances, reunions, parties or whatever.

It was good money with minimal effort put into it.
I already had an extensive music collection & was happy to get a PA system with some testosterone!
No advertising costs. Word of mouth spread like wild fire.

I quit doing it as Rap became more popular...I refused to play it! Decided it was easier to quit than to not play what the paying customer was asking for.
That, & I simply got tired of getting drunk every weekend....really.

I honestly believe I could buy multiple systems & keep them busy if I could find the "right" people to do the work.

J&R Brokerage llc
Truck/ transportation freight brokers, (wife and I only) for all 48 states and some Canada. Logistical and paperwork "Nightmare". 8 different phone #'s, can't ever get away from the phones. Don't want employees, too hard to deal with state taxes as it is. All our money stays between us.

G&S Excavating LLC., Nisswa Mn. It's me and my dad with no employees. only way to go is my opinion. we do 25 new homes a year along with the other little jobs. where not a big out fit by any means but we live good. we live in a small town of 20,000 and we have about 65 excavators in town alot of competion. all the bigger guys that did commercial are now back to doing some residential. there was one road project in brainerd that just started that had 28 different bidders bid on it. The bigger you are the harder you fall.
