How is it....

How is it that snowboarders and skier's are going out of bounds and getting themselves into alot of problems in a hurry and they dont get any negative press at all. I guarantee that very few of the skiers and boarders that are going out of bounds at these ski resorts are not even close to being as prepared as the snowmobilers that are using the backcountry. Maybe the press should be looking and reporting on this!!!!!!!

I was just on a search and rescue last week where a 12 year old boarded off the back side of Silver mtn at noon. We finally got him at 3:00 am.

The most ironic part is most of these people are greenies that are completely against snowmobiles but when they get in trouble they are sure happy to see one.

99% of the search and rescues i've been on have been skiers or boarders that are lost.

How often do these people have any gear with them to spend a few hours let alone a night, have they told anyone where they are going to be and when to expect them back? I would like to know how often ski patrol has to chase after someone that is out of bounds or rescue someone even a small rescue, and let joe public know about the dangers of skiing and boarding out of bounds. im sure there are alot of wives and parents that dont pay attention to these dangers. i personally get look at like im a leper because i go snowmobiling and its so dangerous, its more dangerous driving out to the mountains and trying not to get ran of the road by some family in there 90k dollar SUV.

I think because most of them are going out of bounds at the resort or the avy is inbounds at the resort, so people are looking to fault the resort not the actual victim...

I am a skier and a sledder, I ski mostly the backcountry and use my sled to get there, I also like to tear it up in the swamps and the occasional hillclimb too, I've seen both skiers and sledders head into the backcountry without gear and knowledge, even been on a few rescues...I've also ridden and skied with some very educated backcountry travellers, who have knowledge, experience and the right gear...

Bad press comes from the stereotypes that people use, just as you did calling the skiers "greenies", I'm sure they use the term "motorhead" just as freely...

It doesn't matter how well you educate or tell people not to go, there will alwyas be people who ignore the obvious and head out anyway, but I think pure backcountry skiers get just as much bad press as the sledders, its possible you just aren't finding it...

You hear all about sleds and not about skiiers because they arn't trying to justify doing away with skiiers.

Exactly. With all the press focusing on Yellowstone and land closures to motorized vehicles a lot of people lose focus on even huge resorts because they have been established and have a lot of support from those against offroad vehicles.

in the news 2nite a bunch of skiers and boarders were banned 4 life after going out of bounds from a resort.

I don't know what you guys are hearing in the US about the snowboarders and skiiers but here in Canada they are definitley getting negative press, Actually a lot more negative press than the sledders. They just had to rescue 4 more from Mt Seymour in Vancouver today. These guys ducked under the boundary rope and by the sounds of it were yelled at by ski patrol to get back in bounds.
No doubt that these Idiots should be footing the bill for the entire rescue plus being charged under the Dumb Fu)k$r Act!

They were banned for life from Mt Seymour. Thier pics are also being sent to the other ski hills in the area. It looks like they are starting to take some action.

When they duck the rope here above Boise, and get lost, it makes the news. They also send them a bill, if the resort looks for them. But, another resort likes to call S&R, to hunt for them. All sports have idiots. Funny how 150 dieing every day on the roads, don't produce a call for banning automobiles.

At Kicking Horse if you duck a posted rope and they have rescue you, you pay for it!!!!

If you are prepared and inform the Ski Patrol, they give access.
