How about that new m8 163hp

They lightened the crank. Doesn't that bother anybody? I would want to see that engine perform for a full season before I bought one.

^ Whatever 2 stroke your riding right now could blow a crank at any given time anyways, so what's the difference? At least a new kitty would be under warranty.

The bearings and shafts look the same size but the lobs are alot smaller. Less weight less stress. Just like anything new we can only guess. If your an enginer you could have a educated guess.

One of the guys I ride with (two or three times a year) has an M1000 that has been mod'ed with shaved head, pipe, can, boondockers kit, etc. At first he was really proud of the machine. I rode it and wasn't impressed at all, my 08 XP felt like it had just as much (or more) power than that M1000. I didn't want to tell him how I felt about it, but when I rode with him the last two times, he said he was going to sell it. He said he now likes his 07 Rev much better.

I also rode a new M1000 Sno-Pro and it was a dog, also didn't like the "old school" chassis. If Cat can move forward in technology with a rider forward chassis, and indeed can produce 160+ HP, I welcome it the competition ...eventually Ski-doo will come out with something lighter, stronger, and better.

My friends at Cat said 156 to 158 on their dyno.

Same case lighter crank, different porting and pistons , Y-pipe and fuel mapping. I'm getting it all except the lighter crank for my '09. I guess the thing finaly has snap off the get go, something the M-sleds have been lacking compared to the old 900's. I think the engine will be fine.

All I can say is the M-8's 08's and 09's that we are riding work….:D
with a little clutch and tunnel work even the 08's work .. The 09's just rock this new motor will make things even better. And they run :) Ridin time is where it's at wrenchin time sucks. Nothing is perfect however 2010 M-8 looks like the sled to own once again….Get it together Doo.:mad:

are you serious?

cat makes such cheesy products! youve got to be joking:D wait did you say that green bath tub got some more hps:eek: never mind ive got to have one! ive loved that chassie since i was a kid im sure its even better now with all the crazy tech theyve been droppn! worlds fastest too:beer;

Wow, sounds like you just got out of your molecular science class. :rolleyes:

That green bath tub is more than likely lighter than the summit this year, so if the M is a bath tub whats that make the doo?

A razor blade compared to the M chassis. Congrats on 10-20 more Hp, I had an M7 that pushed more power. Cat will probably not have problems with these motors even if they do, that is why warranty is a beautiful thing.
A platform change for 2010 would have sold me on cat again. I would love to have a turbo cat 800 in a chasis that rides like my XP. Once you ride the XP it is not possible to ever want to go back to the M.

Me too. The race sled front end (but narrower) and the newer tapered tunnel and that new motor would be a package eh?

I had cats from 2000 till 2008 and they were all decent. I never did have a msled. I appreciate what they can be made to do but they still look like they were made in a high school shop class. After a year of hard use they are beat. I have a doo , like it , think its built better. So far no probs other than wishing it had more hp ..... like everyyyyyyyy slad i have ever had. I think the new m8 will prob work very well. Id have rather seen the race sled turned into a mtn sled. sj

After a year they are beat? Are you kidding me? There are plenty of M's with 3000+ miles on them and have had no major chassis or engine problems, that sure isnt a thing an xp summit rider could say. I think you are getting it confused with the XP which is one of the least reliable sleds on the snow. The chassis isnt built to be rigid it is built to be light and that is exactly what it is light, and it wont hold up. I sure havent heard of any M series sleds have their tunnels collapse have you? Doo gained weight this year because they had to beef up their sleds, they werent holding up. So to me its pretty obvious which sled only holds up for a year.

i bought a brand new 05 M7 and it was wrung out after one season. i just broke 2000 miles on my ski doo this weekend at west-nothing but good luck. maybe i got a lemon from arctic cat.

XP got traded for M1000 I no longer own the POS
I'm sittin on the 2010 M8 Sno Pro at Expo and I started talking to a guy, he says he had a M1000, biggest POS ever, got an XP, way happy. Funny aint it?

i've seen many a sled at Dyno tech and when they get to real production there ## are WRONG---we'll see

EXACTLY!!! :beer;:beer;:beer;

I own an AC and a Doo and can safely say they both have their issues but I like each one for their own reasons. That being said...............

Here's your reality check everyone: Pre-production and actual are two VERY different things. Years back Cat dyno'd their ZR 700 ('94 I believe it was) and said it made 145 HP on the dyno. We dyno'd one at 1200 ft above sea level and it made 116 HP. If you look at the BSFC values that pre-production motors use, they are typically insanely lean. Cat was pushing into 0.4 lbs/hr values with the 700 to get those #'s in the 140's. FYI - you'll burn down the motor 1/2 mile from the truck if you run it that lean. Pre-production tests usually occur in a pressure chamber or at ambient sea level under ideal conditions. The ways they arrive at these pre-production values is not at all applicable to every day riding conditions.

Every manufacturer does this same thing, its not unique to Cat, this was just an example of one sled we tested.

Peak HP means NOTHING!!!! So what if you get 163 HP? If it peaks and drops off quickly it means that clutching that sled will be a nightmare and you only have a small window to maintain peak power. The area we need to focus on in sledding is "cumulative HP" as the CVT is more receptive to a larger span of RPM where clutching can be calibrated. Cumulative HP is a given total of HP over a certain engine operation range. Say 7-8000 rpm. A sled is far better off to make 152 HP all the way in this range than to ramp up quickly from 140 at 7000 peak at 7500 with 160 HP and then drop back to 145 at 8000.

I would rather have a sled that had 8-10HP less but spanned it over a 800-1000 RPM band than something that peaked within a 200 RPM band. Once you drop out of the very small window of peak power, your clutching would be off and you would likely be down at least 5-10 HP from the peak anyway. You will struggle to keep RPMs within a narrow band and this makes clutching far more difficult.

Sometimes the "highest" HP isn't the one you want.

Something to think about. :)
