The USA PATRIOT Act has been extended several times by Congress:
2005
The USA PATRIOT Act Improvement and Reauthorization Act added safeguards to protect privacy and civil liberties, strengthened port security, and provided tools to fight the spread of methamphetamine.
2011
President Barack Obama signed an extension to key provisions of the act.
2015
Congress passed the USA Freedom Act to renew provisions of the act through 2019.
2019
The renewal of the Patriot Act was included in a stop-gap government funding bill, but expired provisions needed to be renewed by March 15, 2020.
2020
The Senate passed a 77-day extension in March, but the House did not pass the legislation before recess. Instead, the Patriot Act was split into two measures to explain to the public that it would no longer be in effect.
The Patriot Act has "sunset" provisions that require Congress to reauthorize the program every few years. Even though the act expired in March 2020, federal law enforcement agencies still have most of the authorities granted by the act.
