For the guys that ride with the HMK pack. What shovel do you guys use? I've lost to handles that have popped out of the handle holder. Do you guys use the slot for the handle or do u put it in the pack?

I lost my HMK one and a BCA one. I now use a BCA "T" handle and have had that on for a few rides. I talked to a guy at the HMK booth at haydays and he says he keeps his shovel handle inside his pack. I've started taking extra caution making sure all of the snow is out of the little pouch at the bottom that the shovel sticks into and to make sure the velcro is clean of snow and ice when revelcroing.
I got a buddy that lost a shovel head, maybe you guys should make a deal haha. My BCA pack, and now my SnowPulse pack both store the shovel/handle/probe inside the zip pockets.

It doesn't matter what pack I've worn, my shovel has always had a dummy cord loop through the D-Ring handle that then has a compression strap ran through. Doesn't take any extra effort to remove it, but it keeps it from coming loose while riding.

I own an HMK backpack and I use a black diamond deploy shovel. The handle slides down inside the scoop of the shovel. It is real easy to pull out and no assembly required when you need to dig. It's real slick and everyone I've shown it too thinks so also. Look it up. Black Diamond Deploy shovel. Mine has the orange scoop.
This is my fav pack so far.
Notice how the strap that holds the handle actually goes through the shovel handle, provided you have a D shaped handle. The shoulder strap doubles as an insulated sleave for a water bladder and each of the waist straps have a small zippered pocket on them, perfect size for quick easy access to my camera.
For you non-haters out there. It's an REI Fall Line. I give it two thumbs up.

I have the HMK pack and a Vollie Shovel with the Probes inside the shovel handle. the handle is a little bigger dia. than most where the velcro straps are on the pack and haven't had a problem yet. I also stick the blade down in the shovel pouch far enough that the top straps are over the part of the blade where it starts to narrow up to the handle. It makes it almost impossible to fall out unless something breaks or comes unbuckled.

Get the Ogio Dr J pack. I ride with 827revdog and he never listens. I have been telling hime for 3 seasons to switch and he has lost 3 handles. go figure. It actually holds the handle in the pouch with two buckles. very nice design and holds a shovel blade and snow bunje (rattler). Very good quality and customer service next to none. I had a buckle break and they sent me two replacements free of charge. I didn't tell them how it broke and they just stepped up.

The Ortovox Grizzly shovel. The handle stays attached to to blade and just fold 90 or 180 degrees.
Not sure what model my HMK bag is but it is about 6 years old.....I have an oval shaft BCA and keep the shaft in the loops and the shovel head in the flap. So far so good!
