Historical aerial photos

Whistling jacks
Not in any of the above posts. Here is the photo with Whistling Jacks. On the close up Cliffdell and Whistling Jacks is right of center of the photo between the river and the highway. Back in 1954 Whistle Jack was just a service station and small cafe that also sold fishing tackle. Notice the bridge across the river on the next bend down stream from Cliffdell. I think some of the old wood piling and cable are still there.

Ya, the color photo helps a bit, lol.... Eagles nest right in the middle showing the long climb up the middle fork road and the eagles nest bowls to the left.... not quite enough snow to get into those yet, lol:face-icon-small-sho

I'll do one more. There was a lookout in this one that blew over in 1971.

I thought this one would be easy. More hints Nothing In Life Is Free, by Della Gould Emmons, 1953. Focus on the large meadow. Its probably the only feature that is identifiable from an aerial view today.
Here is a pic of what is at the west end of the meadow.

Correct. Wally is not in the photo

South Fork of the Tieton, Blue Slide, The black spot in center of the third photo is the same shadow of the rock in your photo. Its not clear enough to see the garage in the timber that is now the warming Hut.

I downloaded the photos in this thread from Central Washington University's "Historical Aerial Photo Project" web site. The photos were donated by several agencies and the university is digitizing them and posting them on the web site map.

The red dots on the Bing map are photo center points. You can zoom in on the map to an area you are interested in then click on a red dot close by to down load the photo to your computer. Then you can zoom in on it.

It's not Google earth quality but pretty cool. So far they have photo posted photos for Grant, Kittitas, Yakima, Douglas and Benton counties

Edit: Chelan Chelan county is not included yet. Grant county is.

The site was developed in 1942 with this D-6 cupola cabin, which was trucked to the mountain from Darland L.O. It was replaced just four years later with a 30' treated timber L-4, which was replaced in 1960 with a 40' treated timber tower with R-6 flat cab. It was promptly destroyed in 1971.

I can't seem to fool anyone.

The lookout that sat at the edge of the cliff in the lower right in this photo accidentally burned down about 1980 a couple days after a propane fridge was installed. The view from inside the lookout is looking west in 1970.
