Help with choosing the right bike...

I don't know that honestly. It sounds good but I haven't bought a used bike in quite some time. Might check out what it books for. Definitely look it over good on sat, and riding it is part of checking it out as well.

Anything to really look for when i riding it? Im gonna check the airbox and all that stuff....

Xrated- Yep, that was me. Great experience, my fingers still hurt from that race. Nice part about Gas Gas is they rarely need parts, or at least the expensive ones.;)

Definitly take Brians advice. Never met him that I know of, but the guy he took to Chilie knows his chit so I'm saying Brian does too.

You have any pics from the ISDE?

im surprised that no one has pointed you to the wealth of knowledge on the internet...

i could not be happier with my 07 yz450f. Rides like a mountain bike, power is amazing! Oil must be changed every 3 rides and air filters every other ride. Certainly higher maintenance than my 2 stroke, but who cares, the bike is awesome!

coming off a 2001 RM250 (ported/reeds/pipe) and 2003 xr400.

That's cause we are still fighting the good fight pumping out that beautiful blue smoke!!

There's nothing wrong with a good 2-stroke.

As a caveat, I do ride a 4-stroke (Husaberg FX470). But, this is my first thumper. I really like it, but truth is I prefer 2-strokes in certain situations. My last bike was a CR500. You'll be hard-pressed to find a less maintenance-intensive bike than that. I wouldn't recommend for a first bike though... ;)

I will agree fully with this, I own a 91 CR500R, lots of aftermarket on it, ride it like it's stolen, only opened the engine once since I bought in 97, and when it was opened everything still looked good, the shop that did the engine work said only the 500 could be rode that long without rebuilds. Has been a flawless and very cheap ride, ( not counting the $$$ on performance upgrades) i used to ride 4s before it, but nothing compares to the arm ripping power of that 500. Definitely not a 1st bike.

Check the radiators for damage, look underneath it for smashed frame rails (landed on rock or hard bottoming), just make sure things are straight, check the shifting when riding, should be real smooth with minimal effort for positive engagement. don't sweat the little stuff(worn grips, scuffs on plastic, etc.) just make the owner aware of everything negative you see and try to get the price lower to compensate.:D

will do, a friend also told me to check the airbox under the seat, and to hold it in nuetral at a decent speed and see if it wanted to grab?

hopefully gonna check it out tomarow!!

I have been riding for 25 years now

I race +25 B and Vet B in MN as well as doing the racer X series this year, had a pretty bad injury last year

I currently race a CRF 450, see attached pic

If you are under a budget, get a 2 stroke, you will get a newer, nicer bike for the money

As for 4 stroke dependability, dont buy too old a of a 4 stroke, 05 and newer would be best

The valve issue is more of an issue with a bike that is not properly maintained, this BS you hear is just that.......BS

It is hard to tell if a bike has been well taken care of beceause they can be prettied up easily but here is what I would look for

1. DO NOT BUY A BIKE THAT SAYS NEVER RACED
2. Look at that chain/ sprockets
3. Dont worry about tires, they go to crap after 5 rides anyways
4. Check for the fork and shock seals leaking
5. Does it start easily
6 how does thet clutch feel, if it is grabby it may need a new basket

I would personally never buy someones trail bike, they are beat and never get the needed maintainence. I have found that bikes raced by A and B riders are well maintained.

That is my two cents

What state do you live in?

try to find the AMA district web page for that state, for MN is is ARMCA.org
