HELP: Idle issue...........

So after a quick break from breaking trail today, I went to start my sled and it would just immediately die. So I pulled it while holding the throttle and it would stay running, but die if I let it go to an idle. So we started back and then the idle was really high, kind of scary on the way back at times when I needed to slow down.

Any thoughts on what this could be? Throttle Position Sensor maybe, etc?

Thanks guys.

Oh yeah, got it home started it up, and seemed to idle fine again.......?

My buddies acted funny like that for a day. Then the next time he rode it we thought it fouled a plug or ate a piston. Because it seemed to be running on one cyl. It ended up being a broken off reed petal. Probably cracked on the day it was idling funny. Then the next day it broke off.

Was there snow/ice buildup between the thumb throttle and the throttle block? It might have set off the throttle safety switch and would explain why when you held the throttle open it would run. The packed snow would also keep the throttle flipper from fully releasing and keep the idle speed high. it's happened to me.

Thanks for all the help guys, Ill check the plugs tomorrow and go from there. Im hoping its something simple and not expensive..lol

Another vote for snow and ice built up in the throttle block. The Pro's are very touchy about that. And yes. If that were the case, you could pull the rope a million times and it would never start until you hit the throttle.

Thanks guys, there was a bit of Ice build up on the front of the block that I broke off, but I didnt notice any on the inside, however totally possible, especially since I had just finished breaking trail with lots of snow coming over the hood.

Ill still check the plugs as well, just to see.

Nice!!! Ya just change the plugs anyways... They do some weird things when the plugs get a little bad.. But they may not look bad..

Silly question, do I need some kind of SPECIAL polaris plugs or am I able to get these from the autoparts store?

Another vote for iridium plugs. I had a similar issue and after replacing the stock plugs with iridium's the problems disappeared. The stock plugs looked fine when I pulled out them too.

Forgot to say the cheapest place I could find the iridium's was O'Reillys. Last year I ordered them at the local store and got them in 1 or 2 days. Not sure if it's still the best deal now. There's another thread on here somewhere about that.

Pulled the plugs and they looked good (thank god) so Looks like Ill just pick up some Iridium Plugs and call it good.

Thanks everyone!

I really doubt the plugs had anything to do with it at all. The throttle block on the 12 and newer Pro's are VERY prone to icing problems on the throttle stuck safety circut. Thaw it out and issue goes away. The fact that it would start when you held the throttle and would die when you let it go back to the idle position is exactly what happens when they ice up.
