Heat and Airflow Question

I have installed the SLP Hot Air Elimination Kit and the large side panel vents.

I have totally covered my Exhaust side plastic panel with heat tape, so, do I still need the Metal "guard" attached to the side panel? It seems that it will block quite a bit of airflow........plus, there is no cover like that on our Edge chassis sled.

Opinions? Seems like leaving it off will save a pound or two.

alot of guys have their opinons on this...

but IMO...and i have tested it, if you lay your sled on its side..when you weaken the side panel by installing vents (cutting holes) and the exhaust shield if NOT there..it will compress your side panel and make contact with your exhaust pipe..

i cut 3 holes on my exhuast shield, so it matches the ones i cut in the side panel..and it flows VERY well...i tipped my sled over and fell off...not an issue..panel was still very strong..

so basically..IMO..leave the panel on, and cut some holes in it..

Did the same to mine after the first time I saw your vents.

I will second Guidos opinion on this. You need a little support to keep the panel off the exhaust.

Same I agree with this small heat shield modification with side panel vents you want to keep it in and cut out the same pattern on the plastic side panel before you install your screens.
Unfortunately on my 900 when the previous owner installed screen vents he cut out the entire panel behind the screen, rather then drill holes in the plastic side panel this weekend the plastic and would deform and push in if the sled got on it’s side, luckily I had the heat shield in place. I have now just installed Gill Vents on the 900 these things are as tough as nails added allot of strength to the side panel.
