HEAD/Y-PIPE/RAVE MODS///LOST RPM's??why???

Just finished hi-comp head, y pipe, stock pipe, and cut raves on my 09 800r XP/154......Sled completely stock except can would pull 8100 in clicker 4.................now Im at 7800/4..........7700/3...........7700/5...........Theory says Ive lost power if Ive lost rpm's...............Also was running lower than normal riding area at 4200ft and 40 plUs degrees in temp....knock sensor also going off..................WTF has happened................any ideas/help is appreciated..............and to all..."GOOOD RIPPPPPINNNNNNNNNN"

need to fix the knock sensor problem. it will pull timing and lose power. make sure you have the right comp head for you alt. and correct jetting. you could also try running 2-3 gal of race gas in a tank and see if that stops the ping. lots of guys have ahd the knock sensor go off after putting on a aftermarket head.

what kind of rave valve mods,i had my rave valves cut, treid it and it sucked, just put new ones back in and what a differnce.

knock-knock

the knock only went off once.....going down the road..........but it still could be in deto right?.........this would pull timing..the sled ran good otherwise............just noticed i couldnt get r's up.even in 5..should have tried 6 i guess

Knock-knock

Well it wasnt detonating all day though......the knock sensor only went off once...............but i was 42-4500 in elev............thinking it was just a deto/heat issue

sold a guy from Idaho some clutch stuff and he had the same problem--cut the raves and had to order new ones---some basic ?????? what elevation you running--what elevation head--what jetting--

if you have an slp head you mite have the wrong domes for your elev. some some mismarked at time on manuf. call ron at slp.

My sled is detonating below 1500 metres but the knock sensor has not come up on the gauge. only 13:1

Headjob

This is a 14/1 head.............stock jetting.................that day was 42-4500ft elevatin...usually ride 5-8k...............i know i should have mixed gas but didnt have any...just not sure if the deto & knock sensor were related to the rpm loss.............?.....the rave job is re-cut to match valves on the series 3 motors which opened sooner for more midrange..cut very little.............im interested to know who cut sonics raves though........?

what elevation is the 14-1 head--ours dont list the compression ratio--BUT you should be running the 6000 to 8000 head and if its higher compression than that you have to run race fuel-if you run down at 4000 feet you will need race fuel there with the 6000-8000 head-the detonation will cause a drop in rpms--thats what its designed for---it retards the timing when it sets off so you dont burn it down--

My experience.

Me and my buddy both put (still working with company to get our money back) heads on our sleds last year. My knock sensor went off right away. My head was 13.5 to 1. Put new fuel in it (91 octane) and only had the debt sensor go off one more time in the mountains (ran about 200miles with this head on). I run my sled at 6000 to 9000 feet. After 200 miles pulled my head off as did my buddy and on both of our sleds we had small pieces of our pistons missing from predetination. Our dealer sold one hundred and twenty some sleds in 08. They had problems with motors on 5 sleds. Four of those sleds had the same heads on them. The fifth sled has 8,000Km on it. When we pulled our cylinders off you could see the domes were too narrow on this head. A slight overlap inside of the cylinder. We have talked to the company and they are basically telling us to go pound sand. Both my buddy and I put RK Tec heads on and no problems. I have put on around 500 miles with mine and no problems at all. I have a scope that I put down my spark plug holes to watch my piston wash and shape of my pistons. Plus I regularly test my compression. So beware of the head you have.

#2: Loss of rpm from a pipe. I had the same problem. If the pipe is working right it will allow for more air flow through your motor. Net result is it will lean out you fuel. You will more than likely have to jet up to find your power. Your power curve will change as well and may need more RPM to find your best power.I suggest you call the company that made the pipe and find out what they recommend. They will know what to do.

P.S. Pull your head off and check for damage on your pistions from the head. If it is the same head I had you will have damage. More damage will be on your PTO side. Please respond back to me with the manufacturer if you have problems.

I would love to say their name but it isnt worth the hassle.

av gas

whats eveyones take on using av gas..........????????.Ive heard not to use it in snowmobiles but have back in the day on a 01 modded summit i had and know people that still use it....................??????????????

I know all kinds of guys that use Av Gas. The higher the compression and the lower the elevation (More oxygen) the more likely you need av gas. I run a 13.5 to 1 head so I can run at 2000 ft without av gas. I can still run 91 octane but not regular. If I went to 14 to 1 I would have to start to add av gas. Av gas does not give you more power it gives you a cleaner burn and less likely predetination. If you are running 14 to 1 domes and are running below 3000 ft or so you should consider adding some. That is my take on it anyways.

"rave shave"

Im re-naming this RAVE-SHAVE............there is a difference in the raves from the series 3 motors and the r motors.....the r motors had to meet new epa standards and trail loudness(decibel) tests,,,therefore the raves are larger to meet requirements easily.......the shave cuts them back down to the same size as the series 3 motors..........which alot of people know had way more midrange punch than the r motors...........can be done 2ways.....cut or a reflash.....cut is alot cheaper and I think a must doo add..............TURBO-AL is the man......he knooooooooooows his sheet!,,,,,,,,,dont let anyone cut them.....it is precise or else they r shot....................TURBO-AL @thesledshed

ok cool. Just wondering. may be a good thing to build a program for my CNC milling machine

can be done 2ways.....cut or a reflash.....

If you know of someone doing a reflash you should share the info, this would be much more useful than "rave shave" being that they would open sooner (5800 rpm) rather than (7200 rpm) bringing back that ever so fun midrange punch of the series III
