Harley Davidson whats all the Noise about ?

I have spent several days in Yellowstone Park and surrounding area in the last two summers.

Can anyone Please explain to me why the Motorcycles are not restricted to Numbers or Noise levels in the Summer ?

You can literally hear them coming for miles in the Park, and the Pollution they put out is far greater than the few sleds in the winter.

Any Counts on these per day ???

Are you asking the FS and Park to regulate motorcycles in/around Yellowstone as well?

There are laws on the books for max sound levels from bikes... but often they are not enforced.

Bringing attention to road bike noise in the summer will not help our cause for sledding and may even hurt it.

Sometimes life is just not fair.

I think picking on them will help the cause. With motorcyclests with the snowmobilers It just simply More is better. BTW Pick on the black smoke RV'S too !!!

I think you guys are barking up the wrong tree.. All it will do is have them look closer and shut more crap down. they dont care if sleds dont have an impact, they will just then try to stop other crap as well, You think the enviro nazi crowd gives a **** how much less damage we do? they will just try to get everything down to 0.. so nobody can use it.

It's crazy to see these guys on the Harleys going down the road with LOUD pipes, and ear plugs in.......sure the ear plugs are for the wind noise(not that they can hear the wind noise over the pipes) :face-icon-small-win

I think Harleys sound good, but most guys make them to damn loud.

For sure we don't want any undo attention to any of these topics. But for me it is not about fair or unfair. The left wing libs don't protest against bikes, like they do the snowmobiles, Why. Well if I had to guess it is because it is easier to target the sleds first. Or is it that maybe some of the Libs have bikes, or is it the fact that they visit the Park in the summer time, because they don't like the winter harshness. So FAIR, NO, it is just NOT RIGHT. They need to start with the # of cars and bikes in the summer, work on that noise level and polution. Before they limit or stop winter time use. The only reason for them going after us is because it is an easier target, When it comes down to it they don't like anybody, they are unhappy people.

Just my two penny's

i disagree. the ear plugs are for the wind noise. the pipes really aren't that loud when you are riding on the bike. sure you can hear them you are in front of most of the noise and moving away from it. the wind noise can be really bad and "they" say that hearing damage can be just as severe with a constant lower lever of noise over a longer period of time as real loud noises over a short period of time. hours of wind v. gun shot. in fact i thought i read a while back that part of the jet lag people feel is from the constant low hum from the aircraft while in flight. that is why the true noise canceling head phones could help with jet lag. then again, i might of just read that in a product brochure for bose. so as always i could just be full of it?

but yes, we would be barking up the wrong tree on this issue if it was pushed. we would end up shooting ourselves in the foot. the far left is anti any motorized anything so we need to all stand together. also, most haven't probably noticed but i get the feeling every time my father or i go to get new pipes the guys at the shop seem to be pushing us and others towards the quieter pipes and away from the louder ones. wonder if they are trying to subtly move their user group to quieter bikes to help improve the image???

Why is snowmobilers standing up for responsible motorized use, shooting ourselves in the foot?

Wind noise= put a helmet on! (good helmet not the brain buckets)

I bought 2 HD for a bike trip and JUST got back from Yellowstone last night so you prolly heard these bikes. I gave one to my brother to use and used one myself. Bought them used so pipes were not my choice. His had loud azz supertraps and he wore ear plugs because of the echoing reverb sound. I sold that bike today and the buyers first thing was to pull those pipes off because just to loud while riding.

Those complaining about Harley's being loud sound just like the people complaining about snowmobiles being loud. Yeah they are...but is it that big of a deal to you that you want "laws" to stop people from doing that? Let it go. They are not that bad. If you live next to a guy with a loud bike ask him to drive in a high gear around the neighborhood.

Why do people think it is their right to be as loud and annoying as they want to be? When did we stop thinking about others and our actions to others?

Loud is lame..

It is agenest the law to tamper with ex on a motorcycle they just have been paying lobby more. All the new bikes have emissions Just like a car you cant tamper . Its only a matter of time till they start pulling everybody over with non stoch ex. Michigan will give you a ticket on your sled if the ex isnt stock !!! Good Luck with this fight Its not going to be won unless we a unite that all Bikers, snowmobilers anything That the fun haters can get at.

I agree. There is no reason to be so obnoxious. Loud is lame and doesn't contribute to HP. My point was that people complaining and asking for a law is so much like the greenies we biotch about. I'm just saying...be careful to ask for johnny law's help when we are always facing closures, laws, licensing and so many other legal actions in our own sport.

Why pick on just Harley?? Is that not what the greenies do to us focus on a single thing then once they close that they try to go for more.

I have a Buell (Harley motor) it is not loud if you take a decible reading of it but if you are walking in the park with your wife on a nice evening and I ride by you may say "dam that thing is loud" even though I meet all sound codes. I bet the skies do the same with us sled guys even the stock sleds. We think a stock sled is not loud at all but they think it is horrible loud.

I have also rode with many a bikes, pickups ect that are not crazy loud but they do have there own sound that are just as loud as a street legal Harley why not try to kick them off the road as well??

You may be right but many of them I am sure are legal and then I am sure there are a few that are not legal.

All I am trying to say is almost every sport that has a motor is going to make noise I am sure there are a few die hard bikers that think the sound of our sleds is annoying and loud as well even though we meet sound codes. Heck there are tons of Semi trucks in the park this time of year that you can hear up to 4 miles away with a jake brake (should we ban them and haul the gravel in with small gas pickups instead???) I agree with most that think the noise needs to check but this is hard because not everyone can agree on a set sound limit some think our sleds need to sound like a Toyota Prius and some think the way they are now is ok. So the sad part of this is when these two groups can't agree many times we just got shut out all together.

But the fact is there are allot of us that love our motorsports and wile some of us may not agree with the sound that all of these motorsports make I don't think picking on a single group or limiting any set group is right so in the meantime when I hear a noisy smoking cummins pickup a sound that I personally don't care for I will just remember that the guy in that rig may love his truck and just because I hate it what gives me the right to limit his use of that rig he likes so much??
