How does it look out there?

The Black Mesa was great. No fresh snow, but still lots of untouched. The lodge was a great way to finish a great day of riding.

What are the conditions up at Irwin? Has anyone seen any new Avalanches around the area?

What are the conditions up at Irwin?

CB Rob and I road Irwin yesterday, there where a dozen or so small slides that came off the south face of Ruby. The Pow was Hip deep up there.

We made fresh tracks all the way down from the top into Robinson and back out to the lake, Upper Robinson was really wind blown, . Purple looked to still be holding onto a good amount of snow. If it goes it will slide clear to the bottom IMO. The saddle between Ruby and Owen above Blue Lake had a 40-60ft deep cornice that was probably 100yds long sitting in it.

Splains was OMG DEEP!! We where leaving 4ft wide by 4ft deep powder trenches behinds us. In the trees there was tons of fresh POW to be had.

We are going out for a nite ride tonight. Meeting at the CB Irwin trailhead at 7pm. Thanks for the update. We will look for you at 7pm. You ready?:D:)

Edit: Just got back, it was deeper, steeper and funner at night. It was a full moon, but could'nt see it. It was snowing at roughly an inch an hour. Lots of tracks. We could use a couple of feet to freshen it up.

Forcast: upto 27 inches by Monday at Mount Crested Butte

Well I missed it. I didn't see your post until now.
We have 6-8" in town this morning this weekend is going to be SICK!!!
I have things to do Saturday, I could be ready come Sunday morning.

Lets go! Sounds like we will be riding at Irwin on Sunday with the boys from Sunsports. So there should be 2 or more turbo yammies. My guess it thats we will break into smaller groups. Those young guys dont stop or get out of the throttle until they run out of fuel.
I will pm you my cell number.

Troy

There is 14 inches of new snow over night at the Irwin area.

We were out yesterday before it started snowing. We are spoiled, there was plenty of snow out there. Had to search for the soft and fluffy.

We are forcast to receive upto 36 inches this week. Should be sweet out there by next weekend.

The Y at Irwin is a mine field. There are several creeks out there. Some are covered, some are almost covered and some are big gaping holes in the earth. All are dangerous.
Here are some pics of a friend that fell into an open creek. Luckily he is ok. It took 12 people, 3 jacks and over an hour to get the sled out.

Be careful out there

In the Backcountry
The Crested Butte Avalanche Center has issued an AVALANCHE WARNING extending through the day. Backcountry travel is NOT recomended

We have reached critical values in snowfall and especially wind in the past 24 hours. This significant new load of snow alone will be enough to cause widespread natural avalanches around the area. Weak layers including surface facets, surface hoar, and failures on multiple thin wind slabs and sun crusts will also allow avalanches to run. In some areas where the snowpack is shallower, we have a weaker faceted base which could be triggered creating very large avalanches. As snow and wind continues today we can expect conditions to worsen throughout the day.

Danger Rating and Travel Advisory

The avalanche danger is HIGH backcountry travel is not recomended

was there this morning. Holy Crapola
There is a boat load there. It was snowing at 9am, but seemed to be ending.

This is Gunnison, but still a lot of new snow

You guys have to be getting SICK of shoveling. How many years since it has hit like this???

Sam

The C.B. Oldtimers are saying "this is the way it was in the 70s". I heard that there was big year around 93/94.
I was here in the late 80s and then again in the late 90s til now.

Here in Gunnison, the Oldtimers can't remember a year like this. For our family it has been great fun.
